[ CONNECTIVE HEALING]

Rehabilitation that is connected to community and nature Asheville, NC Spring 2017, 12 week project | ARCH 8920, David Allison Final Comprehensive Project, Individual Project

ABOUT Often times, rehabilitation occures away from community and every day activities, leading patients to feel isolated and as if they are removed from the world and relationships. Access to nature, both physically and sight wise, a sense of belonging and independence, fostering community, a rich variety of spaces, and an environment that allows for recovery to be somewhat enjoyed and enriching were all critical matters in my research and ultimately implemented into the design of the building. Also, sustainable building design that respects the site and location and fosters such community to occur.

ACCESS & LINKAGE

The place is easy to arrive at and connections are made between surrounding context. Edges of the area are to be important and the place must be convinient for buses and other public transport

Safe biker lane borders site and connects Watchuga Hospital Bus stop on site Sustainable parking garake below plaza that invites people up into the public space Parking along side of site

COMFORT AND IMAGE

USES AND ACTIVITIES

SOCIABILITY

Resources: Project for Public Spaces How to live in a city- 1964

A place should be comfortable to be in and have a good public image as a place that is cared for. There should be sitting areas, choices in those areas and cleanliness

Activities are what start a place and hold it together. People want to come when there is an activity or entertainment in the space. The more activities occurring the better

Clean lines and design Distinction of areas and choices for people Tree canopies provide shade and seating is by canopies

Spaces for service dogs and pets Grass areas for frisbee, picnics, relaxing, reading Public area near main stair well with food trucks Seasonal activities and vendors such as farmer’s market

People should feel like they belong and have some meaning from the place. Seeings friends, meeting new people, all helo to create a strong sense of community and fosters sociability

Three distinct communities within the area that can come together Different thresholds of sociability from the area near bus stop to the open space for events and gatherings to take place Activities that encourage sociability such as seasonal activities

THE OPERATING ROOM

Maximizing flow, incorporating technology and designing for patient satisfaction Charleston, SC Fall 2016 15 week project| ARCH 8950, David Allison Studio Project | Lindsey Hofstra, Leah Bauch, Jane (Zhiquin) Liu, Max (Shirui Lin, Inge (Yinge) Huang, Rachel Matthews, Austin Ferguson and Kenneth (Qian) Dong -Evenly divided work

ABOUT With the AHRQ RIPCHD.OR grant, our studio conducted research on the OR of the future and how to better design for flow and for staff and patient satisfaction. Better flow and optimizing once repetitive or distance traveling tasks can prove to directly benefit the patient, help the staff and increase turnaround time of the OR room which ultimately would mean that more surgeries could be performed when needed. Our studio team, with the assistance of professional designers, OR staff and vendors, sought out to improve infection control rates, cut down on time, optimize flows of the staff, and cut down on time spent in the OR and mistakes that are often times made. In the final stages of the semester after our research with a full scale mock-up, we designed the ideal operating room for ambulatory surgeries.

ROOM LAYOUT D

This room configuration was found to be most ideal in terms of ease of transporting the patient in and out of the room, visibility for the navigating nurse and anesthesiologist, functionality of the scrub nurse and visibility and movement for the surgeons. It was an iterative process to find this ideal setup using our life-size mock-up and having clinicians come in to do the simulations

For each room that we tested, we also tested how it the room would function at a larger scale, which included 1. Clean Core 2. Work Core 3. Single Corridor The work core suite with the adaptability of storage / control room next door tended to be liked among most clinicians that participated. It allows for a centralized scrub and work area as well as future expansion possibilities.

THE HEALTHY VILLAGE CANCER CENTER

Thriving in Community

Greenville, SC Spring 2016, 12 week project | ARCH 8960, Byron Edwards Individual Project

ABOUT Cancer centers of the past and sometimes today are places often times of hopelessness, with buildings and rooms that are not calming nor maintained with care. With this project, our studio researched Integrative Cancer Care strategies that included alternative and medical methods of care. A Maggie’s Center was to be integrated into the project which included a lot of Integrative Care spaces. My inspiration came from the natural contours of the site that reminded me of the calm and tranquility that can be found in a small Italian hill town.

MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

STAFF/ CLINICIANS NEEDS: Restorative spaces, good office space, places to eat TRAVEL MODE: Car, MUSC shuttle DESIGN GOALS: Access to nature, restorative spaces, Classes, Alcove, offices

This project involves the conceptual design of the MUSC hospital replacement master plan. Our team examined relationships between urban design, the medical district and hospital planning and design. The program was not specifically defined, but did require an ED, Surgery, Imaging, and Inpatient spaces. Our seminar class, which covered the different planning aspects of hospitals, was also a major part of this project, including ideas on efficiency, patient centered design, flexibility, and learning how the hospital functions. Conducting a user study, we designed the site plan and new hospital specifically for patients, as well as staff/ clinicians, students/ faculty, and visitors.

ABOUT

雨水管理

With nearly 20% of the world’s population, China has been known as one of the most quickly urbanizing countries in the world. With more people moving into the cities now more than ever, there is a greater need for healthcare and the expansion of what is in place. Currently this hospital has 650 beds and we are adding 650 more. This was a competition that my firm won before I started working here. I have critiqued designs at work, made site visits, helped to make new designs, created layouts for power points, made diagrams, and have given presentations to the firm and our clients. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work alongside some wonderful healthcare architects, challenging me and making me think in ways I never could have before having this experience.

SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS - In part of my presentation to the Nanshan Hospital clients, I analysed sustainability features and recommended others that would improve patient care, save our client money and better the surrounding environment.
