harter fishing is one of the most exciting forms of sea angling.

You are fishing from a big stable boat that offers loads of deck-space to move around and plugging into the skipper’s vast angling knowledge, which would take years to gain…even if you had the time.

For me, charter fishing is really special because over the years I have caught some huge fish in British waters from boats based around the country.

I may have hooked and got the fish to the surface but it is the skipper who has taken his boat to the mark, which through experience he knows could produce a specimen fish for his paying customers.

I know it’s hard work running a big powerful charter boat because I have crewed on a few over the years, so I appreciate it when I step aboard a shipshape boat knowing the skipper has worked hard for everyone to have an enjoyable day

out at sea.

Boats have always excited me and I enjoy the journey out to the wreck, reef or bank – it is certainly an added bonus to any day’s charter fishing.

The fishing is the icing on the cake and as you drop your rig into the sparkling clear water you never really know what going to take your bait or lure.

Whatever type of fish swim your way you know you are in for a great time because boat anglers generally catch far bigger and more fish than shore anglers.

So the cost of any trip is relative.

Yes, you are paying for your day at sea but the rewards and sights are even greater.

Can you imagine yourself

In 2013 it is quite hard to show something really new. But we strongly believe the new Airblade Pro will be able to amaze, surprise and fall in love with it.

It is a brand new concept that requested a wide variety of new technologies expert to create it. And each single innovation has been carried to increase your fshing experience. Te body is a mono piece of spacecraf metallic alloy 7075 hosting the whole gears ensemble.

Sides are part of the main body and so there are no gaps between main body and side plates and consequentially no screws on the body of the reel! All this is so a kind of one piece ensemble that can be lubricated through a special lower port, the unique way to get in. And what about measurements? Te critical point of every real is the oscillation gear, that specifc part that under diferent commercial names is responsible of the line lay. Tis is usually the thicker part of every reel on the market. But the Airblade is only 12 mm thick in that position. Just incredible! No other words to defne that. Te whole body is so thin and innovative, and all the gears, rotor, bail arms and everything else is made of the special space grade metallic alloy, getting 2 results: to have a durable and super light weight reel (only 260 grams on size 4000).

Beside this, a reel with so many (actually every) metallic parts can be cosmetized in thousands of ways, just anodizing those parts. Te reel is very smooth, using 7 super quality ball bearings and one way clutch

CHARTER BOAT GUIDE 2013 REBIRTH FOR ANGLO DAWN

Salcombe, Devon charter skipper Chris Roberts has a new charter boat that will open up new horizons – literally.

Anglo Dawn, based upon a BW32 hull and built by Bluewater Boats (Plymouth) Ltd, has twin wing tanks with a total fuel capacity of 700 litres.

Driven by a Volvo Penta D6 – downrated to 260hp to meet fshing licence requirements – Anglo Dawn attained a cruising speed of just over 23 knots during a test run at 400rpm below full throttle.

DISTRESS EQUIPMENT: WHAT TO USE IN AN EMERGENCY A warning has been issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) that electronic visual distress signals should not be a substitute for pyrotechnic fares.

Distress equipment, such as fares, must be carried on all seagoing and most nonseagoing commercial vessels as well as all pleasure vessels of 13.7 metres in length and over. They should be used in an emergency to signal that a

is diferent to that produced by a hand-held pyrotechnic fare. We are concerned that electronic visual distress signals may not be recognised as such, with potentially fatal consequences.

“Therefore our advice is that EVDS, for the time being, should not be carried as a substitute for conventional pyrotechnic fares. However, commercial and recreational vessels of all sizes may carry EVDS in addition to pyrotechnic fares and use them as locating devices. Their limitations

Work has begun to research the efectiveness of EVDS and work towards recognition of these devices. To do this, EVDS need to be accepted as ft for purpose by the International Maritime Organisation. A change to Annex IV of the Collision Regulations will be required to give EVDS full recognition as distress signals.

The MCA will provide updates as this work progresses.

Skipper Andrew Alsop’s newly built White Water, a 9m Cheetah catamaran, is set for charter fame if her frst trip out from Penarth in South Wales is anything to go by.

Fishing squid baits over a deep-water mark, Andrew’s party landed 30 spurdogs – all over 15lb – and 20 bull huss topping the 18lb mark, along with conger eels, smoothhounds, rays and ling.

After the trip Andrew said: “At 20 knots it felt like 12 knots, and she used just two litres of fuel per mile.”

REMEMBER TO WEAR A KILL CORD

Following the death of a speedboat driver in Padstow, Cornwall, over the May Bank Holiday, the Royal Yachting Association is urging all owners and operators of powerboats and RIBs to remember to wear a kill cord.

This attaches to the driver’s leg and automatically cuts the boat’s engine if he leaves the controls for any reason.
