ITH the salmon-fishing season underway and the trout soon to rise, it's time to audit your tackle. Was anything left to mould in the garage last winter? What needs replacing? The Chrome boot offers elegant solutions to the problems of grip and comfort. Traditional laces have been replaced by a wire compression lattice, which is tightened to a snug fit by turning a dial, thereby avoiding the faff of tying dangling laces. Releasing the wire could not be easier: just push a button. The Chrome is supplied with two soles: a rubber tread or a rubber-and-steel-stud tread. They clip into place easily and reliably. Match the tread to the grip you need (be it on rocks, mud or grass). The Chrome is very light, hard-wearing and protective.

The perfect fly-line for sea-trout and grilse? The Ambush has a heavier and compact 20ft-29ft shooting head, which is easy to roll-cast in a tight spot, where there is little room for a back cast. Its Triangle Taper head provides the most efficient transfer of casting energy as it unrolls because the heavier rear of the line is constantly turning over the lighter front. This design gives a more delicate presentation because most of the weight is far from the fly. Ambush lines have a J3 coating, which shoots better, floats higher, repels water and lasts longer.
