Enjoy the Beautiful "400" State Trail The “400” State Trail is a 22-mile section of the 101 mile state trail system from Reedsburg to Trempealeau, linking with the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the La Crosse River State Trail and the Great River State Trail. The “400” State Trail is located between Reedsburg and Elroy. Communities conveniently located along the trail include La Valle, Wonewoc and Union Center. The “400” State Trail offers beautiful scenery, bountiful wildlife, sandstone out-croppings, rolling farmland and runs parallel with the Baraboo River. The entire length of the trail follows along the river valley. Wetlands, sandstone bluffs, and pastures are just a few of the sights that visitors will enjoy on the “400” State Trail as it crosses the Baraboo River, 11 times. Wildlife abounds on the trail, and National Geographic Adventure magazine called the “400” State Trail “arguably the state’s prettiest cycling route!”

Canoe the Scenic Baraboo River As the Baraboo River winds through Sauk County on its way to meet the Wisconsin River, it offers a relaxing canoe outing with no rapids or falls but an abundance of wildlife. In 2002, the final dam on the river was removed, making the Baraboo the longest free flowing river in the nation. Canoeing from Reedsburg to Rock Springs is roughly a 5–6 hour trip. This segment of the Baraboo River passes through Ableman’s Gorge State Natural Area just upstream of Rock Springs. The river is known for its beautiful rock out-croppings and is a nesting area for bald eagles. Paddlers will pass under several 1890’s vintage railroad bridges while enjoying the scenic beauty the area has to offer. The river parallels the “400” State Trail from La Valle to Reedsburg. For info about the trail and river call 800-844-3507 or 608-524-2850

Step back in time at the Pioneer Log Village The Reedsburg Area Historical Society/Pioneer Log Village is located on 52 acres of pine forest and farm fields. The organization was formed in 1965 when a group of area residents decided that it was important to begin preserving the artifacts and stories from our early settlers, and within a short time of being formed, the Society began collecting donated items and moving log buildings to this site. All of the log buildings on display were built during the time between the 1850’s and 1870’s. The re-created settlement features a blacksmith shop, general store and post office, three log cabin homes, a church, a country school, and a farm shed along with three museum buildings filled with artifacts.

"Ruminant" lights up the dark at Harvest Park

Harvest Park in downtown Reedsburg is home to a unique piece of artwork. Ruminant (The Grand Masticator) is a retired John Deere harvesting combine clad in 34 agriculturally themed, backlit stained glass panels. Created by Minnesota artist Karl Unnasch, Ruminant was originally designed for temporary installation along the 2013 Fermentation Fest Farm/Art DTour route, but was so popular among some area residents that they spearheaded an effort to permanently install the art piece in Reedsburg. It is intended to stand in tribute to Reedsburg’s strong agricultural heritage, and also serves as Reedsburg’s first permanent piece of public art. While Ruminant is most visually compelling after dark, it can be equally enjoyed during daytime hours. The Ruminant/Harvest Park Project

Be amazed bythe artistry atthe Painted Forest The Painted Forest is a simple wooden structure located in Valton, WI. The building was built in 1898 and served as the fraternal lodge hall of the Modern Woodmen of America. The plain exterior doesn’t begin to tell the stories of the complex paintings found on every inch of the building within, with dramatic scenes depicting secret MWA rituals and activities. The paintings are the masterwork of artist and itinerant painter Ernest Hupeden, who was born in 1858. The Painted Forest is now being preserved and operated as an educational facility by Edgewood College in Madison. Turn Farm Fresh into a Family Favorite We all know the distinct and delicious flavor of a garden fresh tomato, a squeaky cheese curd, or a sizzling steak fresh from the grill. To know them is to love them! There is just nothing like fresh, homegrown food that comes to you just minutes from the farm, rather than miles from a warehouse. Reedsburg is fortunate to have many area farmers who work hard to provide fresh local products for all of us to enjoy all year long. We support our local farmers, and are thankful for the sweet and savory offerings that they bring to our table. They make it possible for us to eat farm fresh foods and turn them into favorite family recipes! Aspen Sunset Grass Finished Beef

Make time for a trip to Amish Country The Reedsburg area has a nearby Amish settlement, which also provides a wonderful source for fresh vegetables, bedding plants and baked goods. Amish women are wonderful bakers, cooks and gardeners, and Amish men are often skilled craftsmen, so it is common for them to run successful businesses out of their homes or farms. Signs advertising bakeries, farm markets, green houses, furniture makers, buggy builders, farriers, rug and quilt-makers, harness makers and more are often seen along the country roads. While all Amish make periodic trips to a larger community to purchase supplies or a few groceries, in many ways they are very self-sufficient and do not really depend on “English” goods or services. Generally, most of our Amish neighbors are Old Order Amish, and they use horses to farm, have no electricity, plumbing or telephones, and they teach their children in small one-room schoolhouses. In addition, they do not wish to have their pictures taken, so please respect their beliefs if visiting their community. Visitors who are traveling the country roads and highways in an Amish area are asked to please slow down and use great caution if they see a buggy, bicycle or even Amish pedestrian. Maps are available at the Chamber for visitors who would like to take an Amish drive or purchase goods along the route.

The Fish are Biting at Plenke’s Pond For over 30 years, Plenke’s Pond on Reedsburg’s west side has been open to fishing without a license to children under 16, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Each year hundreds of people use the pond and enjoy a safe and fun fishing experience. Plenke’s Pond covers about two acres and is no more than 16 feet deep in any location. It is fed by three artesian wells at the rate of 50,000 gallons per day, and is regularly stocked with fish to give users a great fishing experience. Ken Plenke, who was a local fishing enthusiast and bait shop owner, always dreamed of developing a place for kids to fish, and generously gave enough money to create the pond and to sustain it for decades to come. Experience Nature at the Hartje Center The Hartje Outdoor Learning Center, located 3.5 miles north of Reedsburg, was developed in 1986 with the purpose of providing children and the public with an opportunity to learn about and enjoy nature. Through the generosity of Virgil and Edith Hartje who donated the property to the School District of Reedsburg, thousands of school children, local residents and visitors have experienced hand-on learning in a natural setting. The Hartje Center features a hardwood forest, pine plantation and prairie, wetland area, streams and ponds, hiking, skiing and snowshoeing trails, classroom and museum buildings and a low ropes course. The buildings, property and trails throughout this 128 acre school forest are available for use by the general public. Hartje Outdoor Learning Center S2080 Hwy. Butterfest Reedsburg is proud to have been the “Butter Capital of the World” in the late sixties, seventies and eighties, when our local milk processing plant produced more butter than any other place in the world! To celebrate that fact, our week-long Butter Festival was born, and for over 40 years Butterfest has been one of the great traditions of Reedsburg. Organized by a dedicated group of volunteers, Butterfest will be held June 13 – 19, 2016 during Dairy Month, and is a traditional community festival consisting of a Miss Reedsburg contest, tractor pull, arts and craft show, demolition derby, several live bands, a carnival with concessions, a Saturday parade and their famous KC chicken barbeque on Sunday! reedsburgbutterfest.org • Contact: 393-4822 Ext: Chad

Freedom Fest This great Fourth of July celebration begins in the afternoon at Nishan Park, where food vendors, kid’s games and live entertainment will keep the family busy until dusk. While the final schedule of events varies slightly each year, the Freedom Fest committee brings in several bands, food vendors and fireworks professionals to guarantee a great family experience for our community. Sometimes Uncle Sam even shows up to make an appearance! A grand fireworks show tops off the evening as thousands of onlookers watch the beautiful and brilliant display light up the dark night sky. reedsburg.org • Contact: 608-524-2850

City Government & Services Reedsburg is fortunate to have a team of hard working and dedicated leaders who know that excellent city services are a very important part of living in, working in and visiting a community . Whether you are in need of 24-hour dispatch and emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance, or routine services such as snow removal, street repair or dog licensing, over 80 full time and part-time staff provide prompt, personal and professional service in their various departments . The City of Reedsburg is proud of the commitment it has to the people in the community . We are also very fortunate to have most of our primary city and community services located within walking distance of each other near our historic downtown . This “campus community includes our city hall, public library, police department, fire department, ambulance service, Chamber of Commerce and post office . Having all of these important services located close together makes doing business particularly convenient, and gives community leaders a strong sense of unity and teamwork . In Reedsburg, we work together to get things done!

Business Directory We can’t emphasize enough the importance of the words “SHOP LOCAL.” These are not just buzz words . The people who live in and work in a community are the only ones who can keep it strong, vibrant and progressive . For every dollar spent at a locally owned business in Reedsburg, $0 .73 cents stays in Reedsburg, and that money is then used to support our schools, health care facilities, parks, churches, and other community needs . Additionally, those businesses pay wages to their employees who are our friends, family members and neighbors and they also pay taxes to the City for our public services . Our local, family-owned businesses are always the first to support Reedsburg when needed, so please make every effort to support them . The first step begins right at their front door . We are pleased to be able to provide you with this guide to businesses in the Reedsburg area . While it is not possible to include every business, we do include all Reedsburg Area Chamber of Commerce members, so please patronize them . They are listed in bold with a throughout this guide and we would ask for your continued and strong support of them . Thank you .

Neighboring Communities Visitors to Reedsburg and surrounding communities often marvel at the incredible beauty of this area. Sauk County is filled with rolling hills, crystal clear waters, beautiful bluffs, and some of the most picturesque farmland in the nation. This area draws all kinds of people: photographers, cyclists, rock climbers, outdoorsmen, naturalists, foodies, artists and more. In fact, one of the best ways to spend some time in the area is simply to get in the car and take a long and winding drive, because the sights will take your breath away and will make memories you will never forget. Originally founded primarily on agriculture, logging and industry, Sauk County is now also known for its active arts and culture scene and is part of the strong local food movement. We really do live the good life here, and these natural amenities just seem to invite progressive and creative people with exceptional desire and great vision.
