Aging is a natural process of life but the way in which we age can be altered by the way in which you eat. The anti-aging diet can be summed up in just four basic principles : • Cut out the sugar and refined carbohydrates • Eat more lean protein • Replace unhealthy fats with healthful • Consume the widest possible variety of produce and plenty of it.(1) Creating an anti-aging shopping list takes one from food collection all the way to food preparation. Staying hydrated with good quality fluids, such as natural water, herbal teas or fresh 100% fruit juices, and avoiding carbonated drinks and juices which are sweetened, means your body is able to function optimally as all the chemical processes in the body need water. Think of colour when doing your shopping list and have as many of them on your list in the form of fruits and vegetables. Fruits that should spring to mind are blueberries, raspberries, young berries, strawberries, pineapple, cranberries, citrus fruits, pomegranates, apples etc. Try to buy fruits and vegetables which are in season as this adds to the nutritional value as many cold storage foods have had their nutritional content reduced. If you are able to source organic foods it would be an even better choice as they would not have been exposed to added pesticides, hormones and or be genetically modified. Herbs for sex – gents Sex drive is not governed by one simple mechanism; it is a combination of hormonal, nervous, psychological and genetic events. Sex is never an issue unless there is a problem, either too little, or too much. Often people will seek off-the-shelf herbal treatment as an anonymous act versus the embarrassment of consulting their health care practitioner, GP or Gynae. Their motivations vary, for example they may have lost interest in sex but their partner wants more, or they have a new love interest and want to perform better or for longer. Different herbs address different physiological issues, but key is increasing circulation to the genitals and testosterone levels. In men, erectile challenges typically are related to issues of desire, libido, maintaining an erection, ejaculation or partnership concerns. Herbs from the Panax species initiate erection by stimulating nitric oxide release into the epithelium of corpus cavernosum, improving blood flow and making the penis hard. Horny Goat Weed is thought to assist in maintaining erection and increasing the force of ejaculation. Saw palmetto, Nettle and Shitake mushroom can be useful in treating erectile difficulties where there is benign prostatic hypertrophy, often associated with diminished androgen secretion. Where impotence is due to devitalisation and exhaustion, Ashwaganda serves as an adrenal tonic. Herbs commonly touted as aphrodisiacs don’t always deliver but a fellow phytotherapist swears by a dose of Eucomia to put you in the mood. EMDR Psychotherapy What is it and how does it work? We are all a function of our natural god given tendencies modified by our life experiences. i.e. we are born with a certain nature and abilities, which are modified by what energies we have taken on from, and lost due to, others and circumstances in our lives, especially childhood. EMDR is a technique that was developed by a psychologist for use by psychologists (and other professional health workers) in the release of negative memory and restructuring of beliefs about self. It is particularly advocated for releasing memory of traumatic events. But then, what is trauma? Trauma is certainly, but need not only be, the more severe kind such as hijackings, rape, death, and divorce. (Post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) being characterized by anxiety, anger, flashbacks and bad dreams). But there are individuals who do not experience the more acute kinds of trauma, but rather, get traumatized by more apparently minor conditions such as not having sufficient nurturance, approval or not achieving as much as expected by parents. These can have profound effects on an individual; leading to a commonly held belief of “I am not good enough”, for example. Such beliefs are the underpinning of poor self esteem and are the determining factors for the choices we make in life. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a methodology that desensitizes and reprocesses dysfunctional emotions, beliefs and sensations (using bilateral stimulation of the brain) so that the event loses its emotional charge and can no longer trigger ones’ responses. It is also used to enhance future adaptive behaviour and mental health. How does it work? When a disturbing event occurs, it can get locked in the brain with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings and body sensations. It stays there, forever influencing one subconsciously, and triggering current day experiences, and concerns about the future, unless it is properly processed and released. The EMDR therapist will interview the client to see what the triggering issues are (past, present or future). The client sits in front of the therapist for processing. During the reprocessing, the client attends momentarily to focusing on the selected trigger whilst simultaneously attending to a stimulus (a movement, tap or sound). This stimulus activates the brain to start processing the information. During this time, clients generally experience the emergence of new memory, insight, changes in old memory and new understanding. As this occurs, negative feelings associated with the trauma are released, and more positive and productive beliefs are developed. For further information see the EMDR website at: www.emdr.com

What is NLP? NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a study of excellence and how to use the language of the mind to achieve results; it allows you to model excellence and to reproduce that behaviour. The mind is the most powerful tool we have and yet there are still so many people who are unsatisfied with the results in their life. The question is what creates the results you’re getting in your life? Your actions and behaviour! If you do something you get a result. If you do something else, you get a different result, right? In order to change the results we need to change our behaviour and the cause of behaviour is always thought. So that means we need to change our thinking in order to change the behaviour. NLP was originally developed jointly by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970’s by studying how excellent psychotherapists were achieving results. Whether you’re suffering from depression, phobias, anxiety, insomnia, low self-esteem or you’re looking to improve your relationship, your business, your communication skills or even if you want to improve the skills you already have, NLP can help you do it or improve it. Whatever your belief system believes to be true becomes the truth for you. One of the presuppositions of NLP is The Map is Not the Territory. Our perception of reality is our neurological map we use to experience and interact with the world around us. It is these “neurolinguistic” maps of reality that determine our behaviour and give meanings to things, it is not reality itself. Generally it is not reality that limits us or empowers us, but our map of reality. Excellence comes from having many choices. Wisdom comes from having multiple perspectives. Using the NLP model of communication, we can better understand how we process information. Approximately 97% of your thoughts and behaviours are unconscious, meaning they are learnt. Information that comes in through your five senses gets deleted, distorted and generalized based on your conditioning, which becomes your Perception of the world. Your hypothalamus then produces chemicals to reflect that Perception so you experience it in your body as your state-of-being. In essence NLP is a thinking methodology and a vast set of powerful tools to create the changes deep within the unconscious, although there is so much more to it, so much more! By Warren Munitz (PhD. Gluten free tortilla – RECIPE Preparation time: 20 – 30 mins (fridge) Cooking time: 15 mins Ingredients 100g tapioca flour 70g maizena 110g millet flour 1tsp xantham gum ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp Blossom margarine ¾ cup warm water (I found Extra flour for rolling that I needed a little extra water to form the dough) Method • Mix flour and salt together in a bowl. • Rub margarine into flour with fingers until the mixture has a fine even texture. • Stir in water to make a soft dough – add more water if needed. • Knead on a lightly floured board until smooth – about 2-3 min. • Divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Form the dough into balls. Cover with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rest in the fridge for 20-30min. • On a lightly floured board, roll out to 15cm diameter rounds, turning it over several times. As the dough thins out, it becomes quite fragile. Work gently. • Set aside and stack between wax paper. • Repeat with rest of dough. • Heat an ungreased, large, heavy skillet to medium/high heat. • Place a tortilla in skillet and cook until the top is bubbly and the bottom is flecked with brown. Flip over and brown other side. Tip: These babies need to be cooked quickly. If you do it slowly and on low heat, they’ll become crunchy, rather than the soft bendable texture of a proper white flour tortilla. (Reprinted with the permission of Halfway to Healthnut).

We work in a team with horses to help empower clients.The unique partnership with horses allows for a powerful yet non-invasive experience. Clients are given activities to complete from the ground i.e. there is never any horse riding involved and one does not need any horse knowledge – while two facilitators observe the interaction between the horse and client. Horses use body language to communicate and are thus hyper sensitive to our nonverbal body language. They will respond to these non-verbal cues, essentially delivering a message of what that client may be feeling. The facilitators are present in the arena to ensure both emotional and physical safety for both the client and the horse and to interpret the body language of the horse and client as well as the response to the client. We facilitate for skills development, team building, leadership development, conflict management (bullying), ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers and many more. Our clientele ranges from individuals through to families, school groups and corporates.
