The surveys were carried out in the town in which I live, called Álora, located in the South of Spain. The survey compared: Litter - no litter Traffic - no traffic No street furniture - lots of street furniture. Busy - less busy Noise - peaceful Low construction quality - high construction quality High air pollution - low air pollution Dull colours - pleasant colours High graffiti - no graffiti The “nice” environment is along the oddly shaped CBD, which is more a strip of the town than a particular zone. There are many parts of Álora that could be used as an example of a nice environment, but I chose this particular part of the town, because it is clean and open yet surrounded by buildings. It is pleasant in many ways and received a score of 58 out of 72. The “poor” environment I chose is just one of many parts of the town that could fall into a “poorer” category. It is tightly packed, quite heavily littered and there is a lot of graffiti. The survey gave it a score of 31, also out of a maximum of 72. I had to change the survey slightly after visiting the poorer location. I hadn’t included graffiti for the nice environment, but when I went to complete the survey on the poor environment I chose, the amount of graffiti couldn’t be ignored. The addition of graffiti to the bi-polar pairs further separated the overall scores of the two places, with the nicer area scoring a perfect 8 points, but the poorer area scoring only 1.
