Factories of the Future 1

My factory would be producing animal feed as it is a rural area and there is a big demand. Also there is many field surrounding the factory area so farmers can walk a short distance to get food for the animals living in the fields and in the farms. I would need local people to work there so it would offer people local jobs very close to their houses. The workers wouldn’t need to have that many skills to be able to work in my factory and it would also offer work experience and training so it offers work to more people than just a group of people who are the correct working age. My market for my goods would be aimed at farmers and any body who lives locally who owns pets or live stock. All of the raw materials and things to build my factory will come from local places so it cuts down the travelling time and also the pollution caused by cars and lorries to get there. 3

The energy supply will come from a near by power station and the factory will also be backed up by generators just in case the power goes down. It will only require a few pieces of machinery so it won’t cost millions of pounds to build. If the foods need things like vegetables in they will be grown in another field next to the factory so they don’t need to be transported millions of miles to get to the factory. I will fund my factory by getting all the people together who are for the factory and get them to sign a piece of paper and also let them have their say on a reason why they are for the factory. Then I would go to the government and try and persuade them to help out with funding to build the factory. I will also persuade them that the location I have chosen is a good place to build it, also that people will want to work there.

4

There is lots of houses near by so many people that live there can get a job in walking distance of their house. 5

It would be built in a large field near a village of houses and shops. 6

I have chosen to build it here because it is in a small village of houses and shops so there will be people looking for jobs around the local area. It will be providing jobs that way it also helps with pollution from cars because people can walk or bike instead of having to go in the car. The factory produces animal food so the farmers will be happy and also will people who own pets and other animals or live stock because there is somewhere they can easily get food for there animals.

Tyre Recycling Factory By Jacob Porter.

My plan for a new business is to start a factory recycling tyres which will be located in Normandy, Guildford, right next to the A324. Where I have marked as the proposed site it is empty industrial space and offices which I could convert. I will power my factory using wind turbines. I will also have lots of solar panels on the top of the factory. In the summer, when there is hardly any wind, the factory will be powered with the solar panels and when it is windy in the winter, the factory will be powered by the wind turbines. When there is excess power from the solar panels and the wind turbines, we will provide electricity to nearby houses.

Proposed Factory Site

There is a garage right next to my proposed site where I can get my tyres from. The tyres will be turned into rubber matting for playgrounds, new tyres, Tyre Derived Fuel and Tyre Derived Aggregate. Shredded tyres are used for Tyre Derived Fuel which can be sold and used as a source of fuel. Shredded tyres are also used for Tyre Derived Aggregate, which can be sold and used as backfill for walls and as a vibration damping material for railway lines. The site is extremely close to Guildford and Woking so it is in a good place to recruit workers.

I would need tyre shredders, tyre melters and tyre moulders. I would also need the solar panels and the wind turbines to power my factory.

I will sell my goods to builders, councils and railway maintenance companies across the UK. I will also export the goods from local docks and airports such as, Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton Airports for air freight and Portsmouth and Southampton Docks for shipping. The channel tunnel will also be used for freight deliveries. Because of good transport links, my market would be the whole of Europe.

My Factory – about my area • In my area there is a lot of farmland and land for sale and also my granddad is a farmer so he could help out. • I live in Leicestershire which is the centre most county in England and I am never more than 500 miles from any coast in England or Wales. • I live roughly 4 miles from the M1 which is the main motorway through the centre of England so I have a good transport link. • In my area unemployment is very high at the moment so people will be glad to have work available. What my factory will make •

• •

The farmers in my area have a lot of seed to sell at the moment so I could buy the seed off them and mix the seeds together to make bird seed mixes. The factory could also package up flower seeds and sell those to garden centres for people who want to plant flowers in their gardens. Since the factory will provide more jobs and will help nature then I think lots of people including the government should be in favour of my factory.

My wood carving factory by

Becky

• The raw materials would come from the trees in the forest. • My factory is going to be built at the back of my house in the field. • I am going to put my factory here, because it would be near raw materials, and also if I wanted to expand it, I could. • The field is called Point of Air. • Labour is not really needed, the machines are automatic, so all I would really need is people to cut down trees, and bring them to the factory. 16

• Note: I do not accept anyone who chops down trees when there is no need to, so we only cut them down, if a few people want some wood carved into anything they like. Also when we do chop a tree down, we replace it and plant another one, so the wildlife has somewhere to live, and so we do not destroy their environment. • This is a non-profitable business; however we all need the extra money, so we accept donations from at least £50.00. 17

My Food Processing Factory My Factory

Map of Factory Location

By Ryan 19

Explanation of my decision

My factory will be a food processing factory. Specifically, it will produce tinned food. The tin cans will be made and sprayed with a protective lacquer by a contractor. My factory will process the uncooked food, put the processed food into cans and package it for distribution. My factory will be 1 mile south of the town of Westerham, Kent. My location is close to the M25 motorway, which surrounds London, and also the A21, which is a main route into Central London. My location means I have good transport links to both London and the Home Counties. 20

Explanation Continued

I chose the location because it is convenient for market places. There are lots of restaurants and supermarkets in London, so there is a big demand for food products. In the local area, there is also small towns like Westerham which have restaurants and markets as well. My site has space to expand if necessary but food processing is a light industry, meaning it does not need lots of space. My site is fairly cheap as it is outside of town. Electricity will be supplied by the National Grid and there are water sources close to the site. 21

Explanation Continued

The raw materials e.g. vegetables will come from the many farms in the surrounding area. Any chemicals needed for the food processing can easily be transported by road as they are light. Most of the work in the factory would be automated but any labour required i.e. security guards or product testers would come from local unemployed people. Any machinery that I would need is inexpensive. Because food processing is a light industry, lots of machinery would not be required. I may receive a grant from the Government as food processing generates a lot of income for the Government. Funding for my factory would come from a recent Lottery win. I would also set up schemes to benefit the local community, to get them to support me financially.

My Crab Factory by Thomas

Where is it going be? Outskirts of Cromer 23

• Why is it going to be there? • Cromer is very well known for its crabs and in this location it would not take long to get the crabs in from the sea or to get the crabs to local restaurants and business. • Do you need a labour force? • All of the workforce would be local as Cromer is already equipped with people with the right skills e.g. fishing and dressing. • What about the market for your goods? • The products the crab factory produces will mainly go to local sources e.g. restaurants. The furthest the products would have likely to go is to the local towns. As the company becomes better known there is an airport (Norwich International) close by which could help with commercial cargo deliveries. 24

• Where will the raw materials come from? • The raw material (crabs) will come from the North Sea around Cromer. • What about energy supply? • Electricity will be needed to power the machinery. Fuel will also be needed to power the delivery van. There is no shortage of either in Cromer. • Does it need a lot of expensive machinery? • Machinery needed would include: – – – – –

Stainless steel processing tables; Chill tanks; Ice making equipment; Boiling tanks; Refrigerated vans

• How are you going to fund it? • The factory would need a start-up loan from the bank. 25
