By Abdullah Recycling in Luton The Luton football team announced the launching of a ‘printer cartridge & mobile phone’ recycling scheme to raise money for ‘supporters of Luton youth development’. This scheme involves collecting old ink cartridges and selling them in bulk to abacus stationary store, who in turn, recycle them. The same goes for mobile phones which are probably melted down for useable minerals.

• I chose this because it helps the youth of Luton, I am a youth and I am grateful that people are not only working to provide support for people like me, but to provide support to earth itself. • Sp. The Hatters are called hatter from the old hat factory that resided in Luton, and was owned by my great granddad!

By Alex Council's recycling is now one of England's best Swale Borough Council is one of the best waste recyclers in England – for the second year running residents have reduced their waste by further 9%. Swale is one of the top 10 performers in England. It has one of the top 20 dry recycling rates in England. This has been done by introducing the twin bin scheme, alternate collections for residual waste (green bin) and recycling (blue bins). The council’s aim was to make Swale Cleaner and Greener, by signing the Nottingham Declaration, by working with the Carbon Trust on a Carbon Management Plan, and by getting staff involved in environmental activities. They are also working alongside award-winning local organisations such as SWEEEP to give residents the opportunity to recycle more.

By Alex Council's recycling is now one of England's best My comments • This scheme has helped my family recycle more because before we had a blue bin we didn’t think about recycling but when you have another bin it makes you feel like you have to recycle and its so much easier to do it now. We have somewhere to keep our recycled items now and it helps save the planet. In fact our green bin is usually quite empty but the blue bin is always full to the top. This is obviously true for all households in Swale because the news story talks about the great improvements in waste recycling.

By Grace Recycling in Jávea ‘Jávea’s Town Hall in cooperation with the Services and Environment Council , opened two new green points for waste collection in the Balcón al Mar and Camí de les Adsubies neighbourhoods. These new collection points serve directly more than 3,000 residents, according to Doris Courcelles, Councillor of Services and Environment of Jávea at the opening event of the Green Point to Balcon al Mar. According to the schedule of this project, the opening of another point of waste collection in Pinomar area is planned with an investment of 163,000 euros. These points will have appropriate containers for different types of waste: greenery, glass, cans, paper and cardboard, oil and organic wastes. Keeping in mind the diversity and origins of the residents of Jávea, the Council has sent newsletters to non Spanishspeaking residents in the 2 main foreign languages in the region: English and German. This initiative adds up to others to make of Jávea a greener, more sustainable town.’

Recycling in London •The story I chose was about London launching a new Recycling campaign to advice people to recycle more of their items and to help local authorities save taxpayer’s money, they think if the campaign works then by 2015 they should save up to £320 million. •I chose this story because I wanted to find out what London was doing to alert people about the benefits of recycling. I thought this campaign was a smart idea. • This is the Link I used http://www.londonind.co.uk/compon ent/content/article/104environment/413-a-new-recyclingcampaign-for-londoners

By Isabel • Facts I found out from this • It currently costs 25% more to get rid of your rubbish in the black bin then it does to recycle it. • 80% of the stuff you put in your bins can be recycled. • That you can save money by recycling • The fuller the landfills get the more you will get charged • When you recycle you save money and that money will go towards helping other important things.

By Kane Recycling in Richmond http://www.letsrecycle.com/news/late • My opinion is that if you st-news/compost/richmondseriously want to start recycling you need to expands-food-waste-schememake it effective and despite-trial-problems useful. From what I see in In my area, they did a kind of test to my daily life and what I see whether people would actually read, it seems that my recycle if given the chance to. You local council hasn’t taken can see in the report that only 1 in 4 into account what makes homes actually started recycling up people’s waste. I chose when given the chance. Though as it this because the council also says, only uncooked food waste didn’t previously have a was collected which ultimately does recycling system but with not make up all of what people this expansion it will recycle. Despite this the Richmond greatly benefit the people council started expanding which in of Richmond upon Thames some aspects is good but this is at the taxpayer’s expense.

By Lauren • I picked this story My story is called because simply it “recycle week is intrigued me. coming” and it’s all Electrical items are a about local residents large part of my life being encouraged to and finding out I can recycle small electrical recycle them when items . they’re old makes me wonder what else am I throwing away that could be recycled!

By Leah Recycling in Chonburi The ICM Chonburi Communities for Conservation, a local community-based organization in Chonburi Province, initiated in July 2007 the implementation of a 2-year project on marine resource conservation, habitat rehabilitation and waste management in Chonburi Province, with support from the UNDP GEF SGP. Temporary protective habitats for spawning crabs ('crab condos') have been set up in the municipalities of Sriracha, Bangphra and Laemchabang; mangrove reforestation activities have been undertaken in the adjoining municipalities of Angsila, Saensuk and Muang Chonburi; Community-based waste management activities such as waste segregation, recycling and composting have been implemented in selected pilot communities in Sattahip Municipality. The UNDP GEF SGP is contributing US$46,528 to the project implementation, supplementing available local resources amounting to US$31,000.

By Leah Recycling in Chonburi • I chose this because it’s an article about the recycling and conservation in my local area of Chonburi, Thailand. • The article is about a 2 year project on marine resource conservation, habitat rehabilitation and waste management in Chonburi Province, Thailand. It talks about protecting the habitat of crabs for spawning called ‘crab condos’ which I think is a great name, find it very funny and makes it memorable. • The second thing they talk about is ‘mangrove reforestation’ which is the planting of mango trees in areas where they have grown them before. • The third thing they talk about is ‘waste management’ in a community based pilot scheme that encourages waste segregation, recycling and composting. • Comment: I think this is a great idea and hope they keep it up, i am very happy that they are finally doing something about the waste in Chonburi and seem to be spending time and money on it.

Complaints about waste Management in Spain •Lack of consultation and right to veto; lack of appropriate infrastructure and road management which will impact on local residents and health, hygiene and safety issues through noise pollution, increased vermin and smell from rotting waste. •These were the main points of concern from one group of residents unhappy at the announcement that a new waste deposit site was to open opposite their homes in urbanisation La Marina (la Marina mean navy by the way). That was back in November and now, despite their objections the site is indeed up and running and the Leader decided to return and speak to the residents to see what impact the site is having on them. •The site, situated in the forest area at the end of calle Del Bosque/calle Extremadura (calle means street) on the urbanisation, opened several weeks ago. It is home to four containers for people to deposit unwanted household items and garden waste and is manned during the opening hours with staff to direct people to the correct area

By Shannon Complaints about waste Management in Spain • I chose this because it is true. Spanish people were complaining because of unhygienic rubbish on the streets so the council built bins for rubbish. One day the bins would be empty, another day they would be overflowing.

By Sim Recycling in France The waste recycling is quite good in France because we have different bins with different colours on them to point out which is for what type of trash. Other than there are some people who drop rubbish on the side of the streets or on roads. On the motorways there is a lot of trash or rubbish all around the road. We have different recycling bins...different colours so we can tell which is witch.

• I chose France because I live here and I somehow want it sorted out.

Greater Manchester is recruiting By Love Food Hate Waste champions! This news story is to tell everyone • else a very important message about reducing food waste in Manchester and in the rest of UK. They are doing this campaign to help reduce food wastes because about 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year. The story says, “If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 benefit would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off our roads.” This just proves what a big problem food wasting is.

Luke

I chose this story because wasting food is a major issue, and this story tells people about this campaign and would probably help people stop wasting food. http://www.buryfocus.co.uk/ne ws-features/17/newsheadlines/54330/greatermanchester-is-recruiting-lovefood-hate-waste-champions)
