Spears A spear is a pole weapon consisting of a shaft, usually of wood with a pointed head. The head may be simply the sharpened end of the shaft itself, as is the case with bamboo spears, or it may be made of a more durable material fastened to the shaft, such as flint, obsidian, iron, steel or bronze. Spears were one of the earliest weapons used by man for throwing or jabbing at animals/men for food/defence. There is evidence that spears were used up to 5 million years ago.

Swords Swords have been used as a weapon for thousands of years and have been associated with many successful armies such as Greeks, Romans, and Normans. In Europe they date from around 3000 BC as they evolved from the shorter dagger. From around 1300 to 1500 sword designs evolved more and more rapidly. The main change was the lengthening of the grip, allowing two-handed use, and a longer blade. By 1400, this type of sword, at the time called ‘langle schwert’ (long sword) was common. Another variant was the specialized armour-piercing swords . The long sword became popular due to its extreme reach and cutting and thrusting abilities.

The axe, or ax, is an tool that has been used for millennia (about 6000 BC with a proper handle) to shape, split and cut wood, to harvest timber and as as a weapon and ceremonial heraldic symbol. The axe has many forms and specialized uses but generally consists of an axe head with a handle, or helve. The earliest examples of axes have heads of stone with some form of wooden handle attached (hafted) in a method to suit the available materials and use. Axes made of copper, bronze, iron, steel appeared as these technologies developed. The Vikings were particularly associated with battle axes. 13
