A slice of Dubai • Dubai has expanded rapidly, this section of the map shows the new central business district, Down Town Dubai where high rise office buildings and high end shops are to be found. The residences in this area are apartments which are convenient for the business district. The main highway runs parallel to the coast with easy access to the business district. Middle class housing can be found along the coast and upper class housing in exclusive developments like the Palm Jumeirah which is just off the coast. Most of the lower middle class housing is to be found in the old retail district of Satwa where there are also many shops. The low class residences are situated in the Al Quoz industrial area where there are many rows of 4-5 storey flats with no space and no greenery, which is convenient for the factory workers to live in. 4

Ellis’s Town • Álora is setout a little unusually. It’s long and thin. The main shops are planned out along the main road. There is no “centre” of town, as such. • The main road goes through the middle of town. It has big, wide pavements and the buildings on both sides are a few stories high, with shops on road level and housing above. • The south of the town is largely lower class residential, and towards the north as there are more shops and commerce, the houses a slightly higher class. The highest classes are on the outskirts or much further out in the “campo” (farmland). • The only industrial zones are over in the east. They’re mainly warehouses. • Álora is still developing. There are buildings sites springing up all over the town. However, it’s still very much a farmdriven town. 6

Loy’s Town

• Pattaya has no business district. Unlike other cities, Pattaya doesn’t have a single area where one can find more then one business building. Offices, Post offices, banks are scattered around the entire city without any particular pattern or area. • However, the entire center of Pattaya is a retail area. It consists of literally thousands of bars, restaurants and shops right beside one another. • The residential areas are more varied. As the Upper class housing areas are right off the beach and the middle class housing are much further away from all the entertainment and leisure places. The lower housing areas are within the city and beside the rail line so they can commute to work much easier. • There are no factories or industries in or anywhere around Pattaya. As the more rural sections outside the cities are all either 1: Resorts. 2: Golfing fields. Or 3: Private small airports. 8

Rosalie’s Town - High Wycombe The M40 and A40 are right in between the CBD and the factories/industrial areas. There are also cross roads and main roads running all the way through it. The buildings are very high and packed together. Around and in the CBD is the low class housing, often the flats are on top of the shops. Most of the low class housing is terraced and has small gardens. About 2 miles from the Central Business District is the middle class housing. The houses have much more space and are mainly semi detached but some are detached. They have larger gardens and in general there is a lot more country side around them. After about half a mile of almost just fields (on the opposite side from the factories and industry) , is the upper class housing. This is a lot grander than the other housing. Almost all the houses have at least 6 bedrooms and are detached. There is a main road going towards the CBD for easy access and a road (and train station) going in the opposite direction to London. Going towards Oxford, to the left of the factories/industry area, and in between the middle class and upper 9 class housing there is a lot of farmland.

Most Aiya Napa and Cyprus do not make goods but get the stock imported from overseas. 12

Summary of Findings Frome is divided north and south by the river Frome. The commercial area lies to the south of the river near the crossing of the A362, and the main road to Bath. There are three story stone buildings, and two shopping precincts. The town centre car park lies on the flat ground, near the river and was the site of the old cattle market. The main factory sites are on the Marston trading estate, to the south. Frome is hilly and the central areas contain many three story weavers cottages, built for the workers in the woollen industry. These have no gardens at the front. The upper class housing of Victorian villas and Georgian houses, lie beside the main roads leading out of Frome , and next to Victoria park, in the center. The other green space lies to the north of Frome, and was the site of the old cheese show ground. Most of the residential areas are modern detached and semi detached houses ,built since the war. The lower class housing or council 14 estates , are situated in small pockets amongst the estates.

The commercial areas are located around main roads in the centre of the town. The street is wide and the pavements have also been widened so in the summer people can sit outside cafes. The industrial areas are located on the outskirts of the town to the north and east. The residential areas are located around the main roads and in-between the parks. The lower class housing is located a distance from the centre near the industrial area and forms a big estate. The upper class housing is located to the south west of the town closer to the commercial areas.
