My surveys were carried out in St Helier, Jersey. These are the bi-polar pairs I put in my trial survey: litter and no litter, desirable views and undesirable views, well maintained buildings and poorly maintained buildings, bad aromas and pleasant or no aroma, polluted and clean air, no street furniture and lots of street furniture and noisy and quiet. I trialled the survey in two places. Victoria Avenue was a place that I felt had a good environment because the buildings and the general environmental are very well maintained which has resulted in Victoria Avenue becoming an extremely desirable place to live with house prices being considerably higher than other parts of Jersey. Another reason for this is that there are beautiful views out across St Aubin’s Bay. Many of the houses and apartments along this road have swimming pools. Other significant reasons why I felt it has a good environment are because there is no litter or graffiti and there is some street furniture including benches and lamp posts. Moreover, there is better air quality along Victoria Avenue because it runs along the coast so there is fresh sea air. Although it cannot be seen in the photograph, there is a wide walking area and cycle path on the opposite sound to the houses that follow the beach all the way along Victoria Avenue which makes it easier for pedestrians to commute safely into town. It received a score of 31 out of a maximum 35. Nice views across St Aubin’s Bay Good air quality – pleasant Well maintained buildings aromas from seaside Street furniture

Dumaresq Street was a place that I felt had a poor environment because the buildings were not very well maintained and as you can see in the photographs, some have graffiti. Also, there was some litter throughout the street including more which is behind the cars in front of the pub. The rubbish bins just around the corner emitted a bad aroma and the walls of the buildings surrounding them were particularly unsightly – not maintained well at all. As the road continues it becomes narrower and the air quality is slightly poor in general. It got a score of 14 out of a maximum of 35. I felt that the bi-polar pairs I chose were adequate and gave a good reflection of the environmental quality of Dumaresq Street.

So I did not change any of the pairs as I felt that the pairs I have included have given a good summary of both of the place’s environmental quality. The Extension
