Since I’ve been to Cadiz I came to be highly inspired by the Spanish-African borders at Melilla and Ceuta. As these locations are the closest passage to a EU citizenship in the African continent, they became a big attraction and landmarks of hope among a diversity of non-EU nationals who are seeking a better life. The increased rates on attempts of illegal crossings through fence climbing and sea route methods became a challenging situation to handle both for the Spanish Government and the citizens leading them to seek alternative ways to avoid these crossings by building striker border control processes. As a consequence of EU’s international image as the vanguard, the European Union became the new “American Dream” for the non-EU nationals, a “EUtopia”. Leaving Spain in a paradoxical situation by means of human rights versus Spain’s internal economic, social and political issues. In contrary to the notion of EUtopia, the emergence of soft euroscepticism in Europe creates a stimulating dissonance between fantasy and authenticity. The project created a circulation of perceptions and experiences of the European Union in between individuals from different stages of citizenship through fake Spanish Passports. The immigrants who accepted to collaborate were asked to communicate their experience of immigration as well as their expectations and ideals of Spain and the EU inside a fake Spanish Passport in drawing and writing. What type of a life change are you expecting to encounter? How did you enter Spain? How was your life before? What is your dream here? What type of perception do you have of the EU? How has been your experience so far? Do you think your expectations will manifest?(mainly their experiences, opinions and expectations were asked in these form of questions). These passports were presented to European citizens in an exhibition organized and curated by LINEA DE COSTA at the on of my residency, where they were asked to respond through text or drawings in reaction to the immigrants' perceptions and ideas. This phase of the project aimed to communicate the immigrant's ideas to the Spanish Citizens and take their voices and stories out to the public. I myself am not a EU citizen as well and therefore this subject is very stimulating and relevant for me personally and in the global context of immigration. At the exhibition, the passports were used to build a fence with various materials (interviews, photos of the process) supporting the project. The project aimed to create a platform for discourse in between participants by opening up a discussion on concepts such as the real and the imaginary; self and the other in relation to expectations, misconceptions and our very human desires for what we are limited to obtain. As well as, it aspires to open up a space for empathy in between contrasting ideas and individuals, creating consciousness on this sensitive subject. By transforming the object, fake Spanish Passport to a tool of communication, the project questions the European Union and its global vs. local representation in relation to immigration and xenophobia. What does the concept EUtopia represent for the individuals? What is appealing about it? What does this concept offer? How liable is the image and representation of it in contemporary society? What are the limits of expansion and progressive globalization?; are some questions that the project intends to investigate. Mine Kavunku
Desde mi llegada a Cádiz, me he sentido muy inspirada por la frontera hispano africana de Ceuta y Melilla. Esos lugares son el paso más cercano hacia la ciudadanía europea en el continente africano, y es un punto de atracción y de esperanza para muchos extracomunitarios que desean una vida mejor. El incremento de pasos ilegales por la valla o por mar provocan una situación preocupante para el gobierno español. La UE se ha convertido en el nuevo Sueño Americano para los extracomunitarios, una Eutopía. Esto deja a España en una situación paradójica por la contraposición entre derechos humanos y los asuntos económicos, políticos y sociales internos de España. Al contrario que esa noción de Eutopía, está emergiendo un euroescepticismo en toda Europa que crea una estimulante disonancia entre fantasía y autenticidad. El proyecto creó una amplia gama de percepciones y expriencias sobre la UE entre individuos que se encuentran en distintos pasos hacia la ciudadanía a través de falsos pasaportes españoles. Los inmigrantes que aceptaron colaborar en el proyecto fuernon invitados a plasmar dentro de loa pasaportes falsos, por medio de dibujos, signos y/o textos, sus experiencias migratorias y sus expectativas e ideas sobre España y la Unión Europea. Qué tipo de cambios en tu vida esperas/esperabas encontrar? Cómo entraste en España? Cómo era tu vida antes? Cuál es tu sueño aquí? Qué percepción tienes de la UE? Crees que tus expectativas se cumplirán? Qué tal ha sido tu experiencia hasta ahora? Crees que tus expectativas se cumplirán?...fueron algunas de las preguntas que se les plantearon como input para su participación. Los pasaportes intervenidos se presentaron a ciudadanos españoles y otros ciudadanos de la Unión Europea en una exposición organizada y comisariada por LÍNEA DE COSTA al final de mi residencia. Se les invitará a responder a través de textos o dibujos como reacción a tus percepciones y deseos. Esta fase del proyecto tiene como objetivo el que tus ideas puedan ser conocidas por los ciudadanos españoles y que tengas voz entre el público. Yo misma soy una ciudadana extracomunitaria, y por tanto este asunto es muy importante para mi personalmente y en el contexto global de la inmigración. Finalmente usaré los pasaportes para construir una valla junto con otros materiales. El proyecto tiene como objetivo crear una plataforma para el discurso entre los participantes mediante la apertura de un debate sobre conceptos tales como lo real y lo imaginario; yo y el otro en relación con las expectativas, las ideas falsas y nuestros deseos muy humanas por lo que se limitan a obtener. Así como, que aspira a abrir un espacio para la empatía entre el contraste de ideas y personas. Al transformar el objeto, de falso pasaporte español a una herramienta de comunicación, el proyecto cuestionará la Unión Europea así como la representación local versus la global. ¿Qué representa el concepto EUTOPIA para los individuos? A qué está apelando? ¿Qué ofrece este concepto? Cómo responsable es la imagen y representación de la misma en la sociedad contemporánea? ¿Cuáles son los límites de la expansión y la progresiva globalización? ; son preguntas que el proyecto pretende plantear.
