The current state of the World’s newest virus By: Samuel Schwartz LO’T News Editor
Let’s start off with what started this newest virus: the Coronavirus. Not quite the rats, but scientists’ findings in “The Lancet Journal” believe it came from bats, the rats of the sky. Scientists have known that the disease has existed in animals for a number of years; however, they didn’t expect it to spread to humans. The current theory on how it spread to humans is that a bat infected an animal at the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan, China, where a variety of wild animals were sold. That market is seen as ground zero for Coronavirus.
That is the current narrative that is being spread, but there have arisen theories regarding the disease saying that it was leaked as
the Chinese government. These claims have proven to be baseless, with all sources leading back to a single unreliable source. If you’ve seen any theories about how drinking bleach can be something of a miracle cure for the virus, you’re wrong. Bleach will not cure coronavirus. The CDC even had to send out a warning that bleach wouldn’t cure Image of woman attempting to stay coronavirus. DO healthy during the Coronavirus NOT DRINK outbreak B L E A C H ! Sourced from Getty Images U n f o r t u n a t e l y for the health of a bioweapon created by people, coronavirus can
spread during its incubation period. That means, somebody who shows no signs of being sick can still spread the disease. The question is, how much can/is it going to spread? Fortunately for people living in the United States, the government has already implemented a quarantine system to prevent the spread of the disease. According to “The New York Times,” experts believe the United States has already seen the worst of the outbreak and people should not worry too heavily. Coronavirus has spread to more than one continent, making it officially an epidemic. Fragile healthcare systems
like those in Cambodia, India, and the Philippines may be hurt the worst. Going from 50 cases in China to over 17,000 lab-confirmed cases in 23 countries according to The World Health Organization. Experts are worried that the disease is spreading fast. Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, told “The New York Times” that “It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic. But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know.” The CDC does not believe Americans have to be overly cautious about the spread of
coronavirus. They’ve stated, “If you develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness such as cough or shortness of breath within 14 days after travel from China, you should call ahead to a healthcare professional and mention your recent travel or close contact.” At that point you would be tested and then quarantined until it’s confirmed whether or not you are carrying the virus. Fortunately the Coronovirus shouldn’t be any sort of problem for those in the United States, but with the story still somewhat developing it’s smart to stay informed.
Puerto Rico shaken by recent earthquakes By: Larissa Horton LO’T News Editor
Puerto Rico was hit by several earthquakes earlier this month, the strongest of which occurred on January 7th at a magnitude of 6.4. The island territory, still recovering from the effects of late 2017’s Hurricane Maria, was further damaged by the quakes. Eight deaths have been reported so far, along with upwards of $200 million in damages, per “NBC News” and “The New York Times.” Many sleep outside or in shelters, fearing further quakes like the magnitude 5.0 aftershock felt as recently as January 25th. Some of them have no homes to return to: Puerto Rico Secretary of State Elmer Román says the quakes have damaged approximately 800 homes, completely destroying almost 90. Some who have the opportunity have even fled the territory to the mainland United States.
Photo of the devastation in Pueto Rico after the recent eathquakes Courtesy of NPR
A similar movement happened after Hurricane Maria, with US Census data showing that nearly 130,000 people, almost 4% of the population, left Puerto Rico in the year after the hurricane. Not all who left to the mainland stayed there, but it caused a noticeable shift, as will likely be the case after the earthquakes as well. In the midst of the earthquakes, some Puerto Ricans also discovered a warehouse full of supplies meant for victims of Hurricane Maria that were never delivered. The discovery sparked outrage and prompted the governor to fire three government officials, causing further political unrest alongside the island’s physical instability.

Should teenage media tackle mental health? By: Maya Gonzalez LO’T Editor in Chief
Everyone knows that mental health can be a massive struggle for young adults. The stress from schooling, social and family lives, and bridging the gap from childhood to adulthood can lead to many psychological issues. The CDC reported that in 2018 about 1 in 10 teenagers have been diagnosed with ADHD, 1 in 14 diagnosed with a behavior issue and anxiety, and 1 in 31 diagnosed with depression. It’s no wonder then that a lot of shows targeted towards teenagers attempt to tackle mental health and, in some cases, suicide. The topics are so delicate and have a great potential of being done poorly, so should movie and tv outlets even be attempting to approach them with such an impressionable demographic? It’s hard to tackle this topic without bringing up the highly controversial Netflix adaption of Jay Asher’s popular novel Thirteen Reasons Why. In most respects, the show serves as nothing more than a mediocre teen drama. Bland direction and laughable writing are only a few reasons why the show should have been put to the wayside and quickly forgotten. Instead, it became a phenomenon for its glorification of the main character Hannah Baker’s depression and suicide. The show plays it out as a revenge fantasy with her thirteen tapes each addressed to a particular person who did some sort of wrong to her throughout the last year of her life, being passed from person to person for each teenager to confront his/her wrongdoings to her, throwing their lives into complete shambles. The most egregious action taken by the show was avoiding one key national recommendation for depicting suicide from several suicide prevention organizations: “Avoid showing or describing the details about suicide methods.” This was not the only recommendation Thirteen Reasons Why ignored, but led to the show’s most controversial moment. In episode thirteen, the final episode of the first season, Hannah Baker’s suicide was shown in gruesome detail. Not only was this a disturbing sight for audiences, but it had effects much more grave. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s study on suicide rates from January 2013 to December 2017 found a disturbing correlation. After March 31, when the first season was released, the suicide rate for teen boys spiked 28.9%, and num-
bers remained high for the following months. The controversial suicide scene stayed in the show until July 2019, when two months after the study was published, Netflix decided to take it out to keep future vulnerable audiences from being put at a greater risk for attempting themselves.
Katherine Langford portraying Hannah Baker in Thirteen Reasons Why via TV fanatic. While Thirteen Reasons Why has gotten the notoriety because of its depictions of teen depression and suicide, there are still many other shows that do the same. Countless psychologists, including Harvard Medical School’s Meredith Gansner, have expressed contempt for these inaccurate portrayals of mental health in teenage media that they view as inaccurate such as the movie To The Bone, which portrays people suffering from severe anorexia as cool and pretty, along with showing ways to hide eating disorders and stressing calorie counts even though many disorder charities such as Beat recommend
against such things because it can possibly perpetuate eating disorders (especially pro-ana groups who glamorize eating disorders). Although mental illness is a hard topic to approach and portray correctly, there are shows that have done it, such as BoJack Horseman and Jessica Jones, but most of these shows are targetted towards an adult audience The depression and substance abuse of a washed-up actor in his fifties like BoJack Horseman simply doesn’t apply to teenagers, and even if portrayals like this help adults, teenagers can’t take much away from them, as teens and adults don’t often experience mental health issues in the same way. Has there been any teenage-oriented show that has had a positive impact on its audience’s mental health? There is, in the least likely of places: Thirteen Reasons Why. Despite the first season’s detrimental impact that increased suicide rates among teen boys, the subsequent season did a much better job. Not long after the National Children’s Hospital’s study was published, another study was released from researchers from universities all around the world showing a correlation between decreased rates of suicide ideation and self-harm in young adults who had watched the second season as those who hadn’t watched the series or had stopped partway through the first or second season. The show can’t make up for the mistakes it made in its first season, but seeing an effect to that caliber reiterates the positive effects that media marketed towards teenagers can have. So the question of whether or not the media should attempt to depict the topics of mental illness and suicide among teens isn’t the right question. the media needs to focus on how it depicts these delicate topics, and perhaps it should realize the impact of its depictions and seek experts on mental illness to be involved in the writing and shooting processes so as not to detrimentally impact teens who are already dealing with such serious mental problems. Creators have the power to help or hurt teenagers with the media they create, so every recommendation and opinion from experts needs to be taken into consideration in order to not make horrible mistakes which could hurt thousands.

Low voter turnout and its effect on future politics By: Aubrie Mozingo LO’T Editor-in-Chief
Ever since I understood the concept of politics, 18 has always been a big milestone for me because it marks the time when I will be able to cast my vote in U.S. elections. The “election” between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama in my fifth grade class was my first voting experience, and I have since longed for the time when my real vote would help elect policy makers in positions of power. The 2020 presidential election marks the first time that I will be able to practice one of my most important rights as an American citizen. Because I have always viewed voting in this light, it has always baffled me that many of my friends and family choose to “sit out” when election season comes around. And it’s not just my own relations that make this choice. According to NPR, only 6 out of 10 eligible voters cast ballots in the 2016 election. This number is staggeringly low, and it’s disappointing to see that more people aren’t taking an interest in our government and the individuals who run it. Voting is one of our most basic rights, yet many simply do not see it that way. Monumental figures in the past have fought for the right of everyone to vote, and we oftentimes take for granted the sacrifices that have been made for this cause. At the end of the day, the question still stands: Why do some choose not to cast their votes in elections? This question does not have one definitive answer. The most common responses, however, are that voters do not have enough time, are uneducated about their choices, believe that they have no viable options in the election, and that their voices don’t matter in the long run. Many non voting Americans simply choose to avoid the elections because of these
seemingly simple and fixable problems. Of course, avoiding the polls does not inhibit many individuals from complaining about the state of our nation. This is where our problem lies: We have groups that will raise their concerns about certain issues and controversies, but they will still refuse to cast their votes due to their own personal reasons. Of course, the

absence of eligible voters in recent years cannot be completely attributed to voluntary choices. There is a growing problem in our nation of the restriction of many citizens from their right to vote, ranging from the implementation of felon disenfranchisement to the use of voter ID requirements. The Constitutionality of these issues is still at large, with many arguing over whether the barring of ex-convicts and minority voters who disproportionately lack governmentissued photo ID should be challenged. This problem was seen in the 2016 elecLine O’Type is the official school-sponsored paper of Moline High School. gible voters to not cast their votes in elections. A democracy is simply unable to properly function in the way it was intended without knowledgeable and contributing citizens who are willing, and able, to vote. Unfortunately, many do not realize the true impact of low voter turnout. Skeptics will argue that, in the long run, a single vote is not going to contain a large amount of influence, and I cannot disagree with this statement. While it is certainly important to cast your vote for who you believe is the best candidate for our country, your individual vote will most likely not be the deciding factor in who eventually ends up in office. However, it is a well-known fact that most officeholders are attempting to hold their positions for as long as possible, and this is often done by appeasing the desires of incumbents. The opinions of the politicians’ largest voting groups are most likely very similar to the opinions of the politicians themselves. If, for example, a Senator knows that the voters in their district are extremely pro-choice, they would be much more likely to vote for legislation that is anti-abortion. This is where the problem lies: If a large proportion of individuals don’t find it necessary to cast their ballots, a politician will often not pass legislation that is true to their political desires. Of the 40% of nonvoters in the 2016 election, a large proportion were minority groups. By choosing not to vote, or being unable to do so, the needs and opinions of many minorities go unheard. If a politician knows that a large group of individuals in the same ethnic group are unlikely to vote, they will be less likely to advocate for the interests of this group. In the end, one of the greatest issues facing democracy today is that 40% of eligible voters do not vote. Voting is a duty of American citizens, and many simply do not take this task seriously. This issue needs to be mended, and the only way this can be done is by encouraging our eligible friends, family, and classmates to cast their vote in the polls. If you are eligible to vote, then do your own research on the candidates and vote for who you believe is best fit to lead our nation. As the future generation of voters, it is our responsibility to help lead this nation in a positive and drastically different direction. We will be the example to the generations before us as well as the generations after, for the sake of our country as well as the health of our democracy.

With the season of love fast approaching, some may tire of the cliches and cheesy grandiose gestures. While it’s the thought that counts, it brings to my attention the question of finding other, more productive, ways we can show our love throughout the year without making a big fuss about it. Self-love ensures capability to love others
By: Emily Biesterfeld LO’T Focus Editor
Going into highschool and beginning to date, your peers, parents, and any/all other idols in your life will probably tell you that you need to love yourself before you can love others. You may be thinking that is untrue, or for some, impossible. But, without knowing how to properly care for yourself or be able to respect yourself and be concrete in your decisions, how will you be able to project that onto others? On Valentine’s Day this year, try to reflect on how you take care of yourself instead of sulking at the fact that you don’t have a partner to celebrate the commercial holiday. Besides, just because you don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend does not mean that
you aren’t loved by others around you, like your friends and family. And, if you look at the holiday from a historical context, Valentine’s Day comes from the legend of Saint
but was eventually persecuted during the purge of Christians by Claudius II Gothicus. Yes, he was a patron saint of love, but what the holiday has
was in the Roman Empire. Because Valentine’s Day is so vehemently expressed in the media, stores, and our day-today lives, many (lonely)
around them and begin to doubt their self worth, often asking themselves questions like: Why does nobody love me like that? Am I not good enough?

Please be cautious about falling down the rabbit hole because everyone is good enough and the time will come to have a boyfriend/girlfriend. The purpose of this article isn’t to barrage the activities and happiness surrounding Valentines Day. Nor is it anti-love or antiromance. I’m actually a hopeless romantic, and I believe in love and the power of it very deeply. But, it’s always a nice reminder, to myself and others, to love yourself first, to put yourself first. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish and never will be. It’s just ensuring you’re being the best possible person you can be.

The hacker will go in way stealthier, but with the use of gadgets such as drones and a rc jumper. Lastly, the infiltrator is like a median between the two in which the user actually infiltrates

The legacy of Malcolm James McCormick will live on
By: Henry Neff LO’T Entertainment Editor
Malcolm James McCormick, known professionally as Mac Miller, was, according to wikipidia, “an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. “Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1992, Miller began his career in the city’s hip hop scene in 2007, at the age of fifteen. In 2010, he signed a record deal with Pittsburghbased independent label Rostrum Records, with whom he had his breakthrough with the mixtapes K.I.D.S. (2010) and Best Day Ever (2011).
For the next 7 years, Mac went on to dominate the Hip Hop and R&B scene with many record breaking albums and projects such as fan favorites, Blue Slide Park (2011), and Watching Movies with the Sound Off (2013). After even more awe-inspiring concept albums like GO:OD AM (2015), and The Divine Feminine (2016), Mac found himself struggling with substance abuse as well as depression. This led him to his final album that was released by Mac himself, Swimming (August 2018). The album received very positive reviews from almost all

critics, and Pitchfork described the album as consisting of “wistful soul and warm funk.” Swimming debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 66,000 units, his fifth consecutive top fivecharting album release in the United States. Only a few weeks before Miller was scheduled to leave for his international Swimming tour, he was tragically found dead on September 7, 2018, in his apartment in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office determined that Miller died from an accidental drug overdose due to a “mixed drug
toxicity” of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. This devastated the hip hop and R&B communities as Mac had been a staple in the genres for over a decade. Recently, however, Mac’s first posthumous album, Circles, was released by one of Mac’s influencers, Jon Brion. The album came alone with the hit single, “Good News”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Mac’s legacy will not only be his 6 critically acclaimed albums but how he changed the hip/hop and R&B scene forever.
