‘Hero of Medicine’ to speak at annual Commencement ceremony Joshua Ensler News editor Commencement on the Green, Linfield’s annual graduation ceremony, will feature a world-renowned humanitarian aid worker who saved Sudan from disease. Dr. Jill Seaman was honored in 1997 by Time Magazine as Hero of Medicine for her work in Sudan combating an epidemic of the deadly kala-azar virus. She established her own medical organization in Sudan and spends part of the year there, according to her MacArthur Foundation profile. Seaman also received a MacArthur Grant of $500,000 to continue her work in Africa. According to a press release by Linfield, she spends part of the year in Old Farok, Sudan, and the rest in Bethel, Alaska, where she works with the Yup’ik Eskimo tribe. She works with the YukonKuskokwim Health Corporation in Alaska. Seaman received her master’s of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1979. She earned her doctorate in medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
in 1989. Seaman completed her residence in family practice at the Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, Calif. • Students have a mixture of anticipation and anxiety for graduation. Senior Isaac McSwain-Mock said he felt proud of his accomplishments. “It’s a scary thought,” he said. “But with all the work I’ve put into this, it feels like a real accomplishment.” There are 518 students graduating this year. They come from 21 states and eight foreign nations, including Nepal, Mongolia and Turkey, according to the Linfield website. The Spring Commencement Ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. May 30 in the Oak Grove. Other ceremonies, such as the baccalaureate, will be in Ted Wilson Gymnasium. At 2:30 p.m., May 30, the Nursing Closing Convocation will end the ceremonies. It will be held in the Ted Wilson Gymnasium. Joshua Ensler can be reached at linfieldreviewnews@gmail.com
