adding fuel to the fire

campus, and is involved in fraternity and sorority life. As she enters her second year on Linfield’s campus, Richards has already acquired an impressive resume´.

On the court, Richards is most well-known for her bubbly disposition and her “squirrely dance” says Dixon.

Paige Richards, a sophomore on the Linfield University volleyball team, may spend the fall indoors on the court, but during the off-season, she can be found almost exclusively outside.

“In the winter, my favorite thing to do is snowmobile with my family,” she says excitedly. “My dad used to race snowmobiles, so when I was born, he taught me how to ride as soon as I could walk.”

Richards, originally from Arlington, Wash., enjoys spend ing her free hours outdoors with her family. In addition to snowmobile racing, Richards’ hobbies include going for walks, playing spike ball, hiking, wakeboarding and wake surfing. With no shortage of athletic activities to fill her time, it’s a wonder she has time for a rigorous academic, sport and extracur ricular schedule.

Somehow, Richards manages to parse out enough time for volleyball and school. As an exercise science major, Rich ards must manage heavy class loads filled with labs and long readings. Somehow, she moves through her school work with enviable ease and grace.

“Learning about the body and how it works is my favorite part (of exercise science). It is so fascinating to me and incredibly helpful for my future profession,” Richards says.

The future profession Richards refers to is working as a strength coach for a professional or college team. The lofty goal may seem unattainable, but Richards is known for pursuing her passions with unwavering focus.

“Paige adds the gasoline to the fire during the games and practices,” teammate and friend Aylea Dixon says.

Already on the path to achieving her goals, Richards has an internship with the Linfield strength and conditioning & sport performance coach Ella Riddle. Richards is eager to dive head first into the world of injury prevention and athlete care. Richards owns every step of her journey. Pursing her goals is something she manages with great care, taking after her own mother’s passions.

“My mother is a physical therapist so I also grew up in the world of medi-cine, knowing it was the field I wanted to be in,” Richards says.

Outside of class, Richards stays busy on campus. She is a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative for volleyball, runs the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter on

As a defensive specialist, Richards is a crucial piece of the team. Her ath-leticism and good humor make Richards a good teammate and dangerous com-petitor.

“When I first met Paige, I was scared she was another setter, which is my position, because she’s insanely athletic,” Dixon says. “But she’s my friend because she is literally always in a good mood. She’s the one giggling in the back-ground.”

Don’t be fooled by Richards’ athleticism and skill. She is still growing as a volleyball player. Entering only her sixth year in the sport, Richards got a much later start playing volleyball than her peers. Formerly a dancer of eight years, Richards had to play catch-up to get to where she is. “Most volleyball players start at young ages, like elementary school. However, I didn’t begin playing until my freshman year of high school and had to start my recruiting process only two years later. I’m so fortunate to be able to play collegiate volleyball, but it took a lot of hard work and discipline to be able to do,” she says.

This season Richards is focused on being her best. As such, she is honed in on several goals, saying she wants specifically to “be consistent, but also take more of a leadership role on the court. I work hard to be an encouraging team-mate and overall positive influence on those around me.”

Those efforts shine through to all who know her well. Good memories and competitive practices seem to be abundant when Richards is around. During the recent team’s trip to California, a rogue elevator and 11 players resulted in Rich-ards’ favorite memory

“Eleven of us tried to take the elevator back to our rooms after a night of bonding and we all got stuck for 30 minutes, eventually having to be rescued by the fire department,” she says.

This season, Richards is optimistic about the team’s Northwest Conference prospects. She sings each new player’s praises and is excited about all the returning talent.

“We brought in a ton of super tal ented girls, which not only gives us a deep bench but also increases the level of competition on our team. It’s been super motivating for our returners,” Richards says. “I’m so excited to see how this year will pan out.”

Whether she’s hustling for a dig on the court or pursing her dream career, Richards is equipped with the tools for success. Her work ethic and infectious positivity pushes her in the right direction even in the difficult times.

Known by her teammates for accelerating the intensity at games and practices, Paige Richards is playing a key role in the resurgence of the Linfield volleyball program

building the foundation

Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times aley Domeck is in her third year as Linfield head volleyball coach.

HIn 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979.

Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience.

Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level.

Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle

blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior.

Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team.

Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Maggie Fiocchi, a recent graduate of Linfield University and its women’s tennis program, is one of two Northwest Conference representatives un-der consideration for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Fiocchi, who in May completed bachelor’s degrees in economics and psychology, is one of 151 nominees who were selected by confer-ence offices to move forward to the selection committee for Top 30 con-sideration for the Woman of the Year award. A total of 577 nominations were considered.

From the list of the Top 30 nominees, the Woman of the Year Selection Committee will announce nine finalists, three from each NCAA divi-sion. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will review the finalists and name the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year at the NCAA Convention in January in San Antonio, Texas.

The Kennewick, Washington, resident was a four-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a four-year honoree on the Linfield Dean’s List. She complet-ed four years at Linfield with nearly perfect 3.97 grade point average.

On the tennis court last spring, Fiocchi compiled a 13-2 record in singles, including a spotless 9-0 mark against NWC competition. She was equally as effective in doubles, rolling up a 14-3 record and an 8-1 total within NWC play.
