WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

BLENDING IN PERFECTLY

Quick to adjust to new surroudings, Marina Erosa has wasted no time in making new friends and contributing her considerable skills to the Linfield volleyball program

Watch out when No. 8 steps on the court. Marina Erosa, from Wilmington, California, has arrived and she’s ready to make a difference for the Linfield Uni versity Wildcats.

As junior transfer from Los Angeles Harbor College, she might be new to the program, but Erosa hasn’t missed a beat. In just nine matches she’s racked up 80 kills. Looking at her, you might think she’s a seasoned veteran of the program. In reality, Erosa is still navigating the adjustment of being the new kid on campus.

“The biggest adjustment I have had to make coming into Linfield’s program has been working to balance school and volleyball again,” Erosa says. “As well as being away from home and being busy with school, playing volleyball. Support from my teammates has really helped.”

Erosa started college at the University of Hawai’i, but ultimately returned home because of COVID. She then attended LA Harbor College, where she played volleyball. Though she was just there for one season, Erosa piled up an impressive resume smattered with awards.

Coming to Linfield “was weird since I’m a junior transfer and didn’t know many people,” says. “But being on the volleyball team has really helped. I do miss home but I love living in McMinnville. I’m excited for the cold, rain and all the seasons,” Erosa says.

While Oregon is a long ways away from Wilmington, she hasn’t spent a lot time away from her family.

“So far, my favorite memory has been traveling to California for volleyball. Since I am from California, it was nice that my family and friends were able to go to my games to watch me play, as well as just being at ‘home’ with my teammates,” Erosa says.

Erosa is optimistic about the team’s chances of achieving a winning season. While she definitely wants to make the most of her first semester in cardinal and purple, Erosa is primarily focused on personal growth. Being new to the program, Erosa is determined to prove her worth.

“My goals for this season are to work hard, stay confident, grow as a play-er as well as grow closer with my team,” she says. “I want to play with grit and get a lot of wins.”

With her team at her side, there is nothing Erosa can’t accomplish.

“I love my team and the atmosphere. We are competitive and determined to work hard, play our best and play for each other knowing we have each other’s back,” says the 5-foot-9 outside hitter.

When she’s not on the court, Erosa can be found studying exercise science. As a true sports lover, she has no intention of leaving competitive athletics behind when she graduates. Erosa aspires to be an athletic trainer or physical therapist for a sports team. She hopes one day to work with a team that allows her to traverse the far corners of the world.

“I chose this major because when I was thinking about what I wanted to become or do in life, I wanted to love what I do. And I love sports and exercise, so I figured ‘Why not go into something that has it all?’” she says. “Post graduation, I want to hopefully be working with a sports team and become a physical therapist or athletic trainer. Possibly even travel to different places I’ve never been to.”

Exercise science is Erosa’s bread and butter. She enjoys learning about the body and injury prevention. She has been playing sports since she was five years old, so Erosa knows a thing or two about injuries.

In her free time, Erosa might be found chowing down on a pickle or outside on a hiking trail. She loves being outdoors with her friends and family, but she is in fact a pickle enthusiast.

“Usually in my free time, I will hang out with my friends and teammates, go on hikes, go to the beach or go fishing. I got into hiking and fishing because my dad and I love the outdoors. He taught me how to fish at a very young age and I have loved it ever since,” Erosa says.

This semester, Erosa is also considering other aspects of campus life that she might become involved in. It’s a wonder she’s had any time since the start of the season to catch her breath. Yet, Ero sa is ready for more. Recently, she’s been considering joining a sorority on campus.

“My friends and teammates have been talking to me about the sorority life, which seems interesting and fun. I’ve been thinking about joining,” she says.

Whatever Erosa ends up getting into, it’s sure to be amazing. Erosa brings a fire and energy to everything she does. Despite being new to Linfield, she is already making her presence known.

HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK

building the foundation

Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times aley Domeck is in her third year as Linfield head volleyball coach.

HIn 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979.

Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience.

Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level.

Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle

blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior.

Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team.

Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Maggie Fiocchi, a recent graduate of Linfield University and its women’s tennis program, is one of two Northwest Conference representatives under consideration for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Fiocchi, who in May completed bachelor’s degrees in economics and psychology, is one of 151 nominees who were selected by confer-ence offices to move forward to the selection committee for Top 30 con-sideration for the Woman of the Year award. A total of 577 nominations were considered.

From the list of the Top 30 nominees, the Woman of the Year Selection Committee will announce nine finalists, three from each NCAA divi-sion. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will review the finalists and name the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year at the NCAA Convention in January in San Antonio, Texas.

The Kennewick, Washington, resident was a four-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a four-year honoree on the Linfield Dean’s List. She complet-ed four years at Linfield with nearly perfect 3.97 grade point average.

On the tennis court last spring, Fiocchi compiled a 13-2 record in singles, including a spotless 9-0 mark against NWC competition. She was equally as effective in doubles, rolling up a 14-3 record and an 8-1 total within NWC play.
