learning on the job
Fully immersed in Linfield’s academic, athletic and fraternal communities, Reese Nelson is thriving at Linfield
by MARISSA DOLSON ’24
When he’s not on the soccer field alongside his team mates, Linfield University soccer player Reese Nelson is busy exploring the world.
As one of three senior leaders, being a member of the Linfield men’s soccer team has been a crucial element in Nelson’s experience, not only at Linfield but as a person.
“There are a lot of things that have made my experience at Linfield memorable,” says the graduate of Portland’s Lincoln High School. “For starters, being on the soccer team has had a great impact on my life and has given me memories that I will never forget.”
Nelson’s teammates only have kind words to share.
“Reese is a competitive and hard-working player. As a team and a player, you love guys like Reese because they elevate and push everyone around them,” says Wildcats cocaptain Logan Clizer.
Despite being a senior leader on the team, Nelson has also expressed his gratitude for being on the Executive Team of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He says being involved with this group of men has had a deep impact on his life at Linfield. Through soccer teammates and his fraternity brothers, Nelson has made everlasting memories and friendships through the course of the last four years at Linfield.
Says Nelson: “Most importantly, all the friends I’ve made and the good times I have had with them are the biggest things I will take away from my time at Linfield, with the exception of my degree, of course.”
He’s proud to have discovered his passion in his chosen major, exercise science. Once he receives his undergraduate degree this spring, he plans to go to physical therapy school and become a physical therapist.
From a young age, he always want ed to be a physical therapist. His desire to enter the field started building when he himself needed to undergo physical therapy. That time of his life left a lasting impression on him. His degree in exercise science has given Nelson a new outlook on life, especially through his athletic career.
“Studying for a degree in exercise science means that you have to take a lot of science classes,” he says. “It’s super interesting because it kind of changes the way that you view a lot of things. It changes the way you see
illnesses, injuries and even just random daily activities.”
Nelson has excelled in his studies, and through his classes at Linfield, he has learned a lot about himself. Nelson is grateful for the welcoming environment at Linfield.
“My academic career has taught me a lot of things,” he says, “but some of the big ones are things like asking as many questions as you can think of, and it’s okay to be wrong and learn on the job sometimes.”
Nelson’s support system has been one of his greatest influences throughout his life. He offers an endless amount of gratitude for his family and all the opportunities they have helped him to be a part of.
“I have an extremely healthy and significant relationship with my family. It consists of both my parents, a younger sister, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.
“My sister is one of my best friends, and she just started her first semester at the University of Utah. My mom is my hero. She is an elementary school teacher and I don’t know anyone who is stronger than her. And my dad is my role model, and even though he is my father, we have kind of a brotherly relationship.”
Nelson’s relationship with his father, Michael, is untouchable. Reese admires his father’s work ethic, the way he goes about life, and how he has always been there for their family. Michael has always motivated Reese to set his aspirations high.
“My dad has taught me a lot of things, but one of the biggest is that hard work leads to success and fun as well,” says Nelson.
Soccer has granted him a lot of opportunities, one of which parallels his passion for traveling.
“I love to travel. In high school, I traveled to Spain with my soccer team to play some Span ish youth teams. I’ve also been to England, France, Scotland, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Canada, and Mexico, along with about 15 other states.”
An active person, Nelson loves the outdoors. Some of his favorite hobbies include skiing, hiking, surfing and anything that allows him to be outside.
“I’ve climbed to the top of Mount Hood, gone skydiving, and even got a scuba diving certification.”
Being a part of the Linfield soccer team, traveling the world and pursuing his dreams of becoming a physical therapist; he seemingly does it all. He remains eternally grateful for the people whom he’s met along the way, the memories he’s made, his family, and the opportunities he’s been given on and off

AND LACROSSE COMPLEX
THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last.
Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured.
The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.
In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1.
Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Phase
2 could begin as early as 2021.
Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand.
Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS
Linfield rated as the top-rated liberal arts school in Oregon
Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2022 College Guide and Rankings. And for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Linfield University one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation when it comes to social mobility.
In U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings, Linfield was named the top liberal arts college in Oregon and No. 57 in the nation on the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” list.
The social mobility category measures how well universities graduate students who received federal Pell Grants. Students receiving these grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, with most money going to students with total family incomes below $20,000. Of Linfield’s 1,762 undergraduate students last year, 480 individuals (27%) were Pell Grant eligible.
Linfield was also the highest ranked institution in Oregon on the “Campus Ethnic Diversity among National Liberal Arts Colleges” list and was recognized for the second consecutive year among the publication’s list of “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs.”
U.S. News & World Report isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s commitment to improving the lives of students. Recently, Washington Monthly released its 2022 rankings, naming Linfield the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon and among the Best Bang for your Buck in the West.
Linfield skyrocketed into the top 100 top liberal arts colleges in the country – coming in at No. 66 – after being ranked 112th in 2021.
Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their con tribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. The full rankings can be found at washingtonmonthly.com/2022-college-guide.

Former athletes and coaches from past Linfield teams are invited to join in the celebration on Saturday, October 1
