WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

self-made man

Perhaps it’s a quality not inherent but instead discovered through his years of playing soccer. His love for the game began at a young age and was passed down from his father, Miguel.

Angel Hernandez of the Linfield University men’s soccer team might be the first person in his family to attend college, but he certainly isn’t letting the opportunity pass him by.

Entering his third year on Linfield’s campus, Hernandez is heavily involved in many aspects of the community. Originally from Kelso, Wash., Hernandez wasted no time joining the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and the First Scholars program. Through these other communities, Hernandez upholds a higher standard in the classroom and beyond.

“We are expected to maintain grades, host reunions for Linfield alumni, donate, fulfill community service hours, and form friendships and connections outside of our four years at Linfield,” Hernandez says.

Though Hernandez keeps a busy schedule, he makes time for his studies. His major is business management. After graduation, he hopes to be self-employed. Ideally Hernandez will start his own business. While he dreams of opening an athletic store “where everyone is considered an athlete,” it’s clear his only limitations are his own imagination. And just as Hernandez shows on the pitch, he has the work ethic to make his dreams become reality.

“Angel is a consistent performer and hard worker,” says good friend Max Testa. “As a team mate, I know I can always rely on him to show up to play no matter the conditions or occasion. He’s a person who fears no one and leads by example on the field, whether it be in practice or games.”

Hernandez takes a particular interest in business law. Thus far, his favorite class has been Organizational Behavioral Management. Both interests lend themselves well toward his future career goals, but what should put Hernandez a cut above his competition now and in the future is intangible. Hernandez’s X-factor seems to be ingrained in every fiber of his being. It’s a quality that’s visible to those who work alongside him.

Says Testa: “I can’t say I know exactly where Angel will be in the future, but I am certain that regardless of the career path he chooses, he will quickly rise to the top due to his high level of commitment and work ethic.”

It’s possible Hernandez was born with his proverbial teeth clenched, ready to push through whatever life threw at him.

“It was my dad who introduced me to soccer. He is from Jalisco, Mexico, where soccer is huge. He got me into soc cer at a young age and I really enjoyed playing it,” Hernandez says. “I soon progressed into tougher leagues and better teams. The rest is history.”

Being the son of an immigrant, he has had to overcome the negative stereotypes associated with being Mexican-American. Hernandez hasn’t let outside influences control him. Nor has he allowed the pressures of American politics to affect his connec tion with his father, whom he has a close relationship with.

“As the child of an immigrant, I was taught that nothing comes without sacrifice,” Hernandez says.

This fall, Linfield’s junior defender has been put to the test once again. On a team with 17 freshmen and only five seniors, it’s on Hernandez and the other third-year players to step up and be leaders. If anyone can step up to the plate, it is Hernandez; he’s got the skills and mindset to make waves in the Northwest Conference this season.

“My mentality going into this season is to be better than I was yesterday,” he says. “If I am constantly improving, I will be able to perform at the level needed to help the soccer program progress. By becoming better every day, I will develop good habits that will help me become the person and player I want to be.”

Testa too confirms Hernandez’s drive, saying “When I came on to the team my fresh man year, I immediately identified Angel as a competitor and performer. I knew he would be someone who would challenge me and give me an idea of the caliber expected of the incoming class.”

Even when he isn’t on the field, Hernandez is never far from the sport. His favorite pastimes include “watching soccer highlights, FIFA content, and workouts,” Hernandez says proudly.

Not surprisingly, he found these hobbies through his love for playing soccer. With his friends close by there’s no shortage of com petition, even on their days off.

“We have mini rivalries in just about everything we do. It always ends up getting super competitive by the end,” Testa says.

Hernandez has a quality engrained in him that will both propel him to success and endear him to many. It is easy to admire his work ethic and want to follow his lead in life and in soccer.

Angel Hernandez’s dream of launching his own business seems within reach for the first-generation college student

AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last.

Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured.

The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.

In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1.

Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Phase

2 could begin as early as 2021.

Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand.

Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

HEAD COACH ANDREW DUVALL

Andrew Duvall is in his third year as head coach of the Linfield men’s soccer program. Duvall came to Linfield after spending eight years as assistant men’s coach at Concordia University-Portland.

While at Concordia, Duvall managed a multitude of responsibilities, including recruiting, team training, academic mentorship, team travel, program budgeting, camps, team equipment and team scheduling.

The CU men’s program compiled a record of 90-60-14 during Duvall’s tenure, all while transitioning from an NAIA institution to a full-fledged member of NCAA Division II.

As a player, Duvall lettered four seasons in soccer at Concordia from 1999 through 2002, playing in 73 career matches. He began as an assistant coach at Concordia in 2011.

Duvall holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and a USSF National Youth License. He completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Concordia in 2003 and went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sport administration and coaching from the University of New Mexico in 2011.

Duvall has been a head coach, age group coordinator, assistant director of coaching and director of coaching for various youth soccer organizations in Washington, New Mexico and Oregon.

At Concordia, Duvall served as the athletic department’s director of internal operations, facilities coordinator, and taught courses as an adjunct professor within the School of Management and Department of Exercise and Sport Science.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS

Linfield rated as the top-rated liberal arts school in Oregon

Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2022 College Guide and Rankings. And for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Linfield University one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation when it comes to social mobility.

In U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings, Linfield was named the top liberal arts college in Oregon and No. 57 in the nation on the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” list.

The social mobility category measures how well universities graduate students who received federal Pell Grants. Students receiving these grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, with most money going to students with total family incomes below $20,000. Of Linfield’s 1,762 undergraduate students last year, 480 individuals (27%) were Pell Grant eligible.

Linfield was also the highest ranked institution in Oregon on the “Campus Ethnic Diversity among National Liberal Arts Colleges” list and was recognized for the second consecutive year among the publication’s list of “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs.”

U.S. News & World Report isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s commitment to improving the lives of students. Recently, Washington Monthly released its 2022 rankings, naming Linfield the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon and among the Best Bang for your Buck in the West.

Linfield skyrocketed into the top 100 top liberal arts colleges in the country – coming in at No. 66 – after being ranked 112th in 2021.

Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their con tribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. The full rankings can be found at washingtonmonthly.com/2022-college-guide.
