HOSPITALITY DESIGN
CENTRICITY HOTEL Designer / Lin Jie Huang Instructor / Tuan Louv Software / AutoCAD, Photoshop, Sketchup 3D Max
PROJECT INTRODUCTION Centricity Hotel is the boutique hotel that our client, Hotels Group International, is bringing to the downtown Oakland. The property is located at 1540 Broadway Street, Oakland, California, and going to be transformed into an eight stories hotel plus two floors parking lot in the basement from its original two stories building. The square footage will go to 66,323.5 in total. Moreover, there will be 60 hotel rooms in total, 10 rooms each floor from 3 to 8 story. We are commissioned to design the 1st floor, 2nd floor and the skybar on the rooftop. The main spaces in those two floors include a lobby, a restaurant, a cocktail lounge, a ballroom, a banquet room, meeting rooms, health club, and the executive office suite. Moreover, the back-of-house is also the necessary spaces for hotel service, storage, and good working environment.

The event venue, gallery, and theater surround. According to the function of surrounding building, Centricity Hotel can be designed between formal and casual to cope with a different kind of guests’need. The historical and art-related surrounding can lead us to think about more cultural and artistic concept. The walkable distance to the public transportation is the sustainable feature helps to get LEED point.

LOT ANALYSIS
Natural light and the views from the hotel are blocked under 5 floors and the back of the house of the whole building. Noise but the nice view at the facade of the hotel (Fece Broadway Street , landmark building and the square.)
The onsite garage entrance is at the building on the 15th St. (Need to detour from 17th)
According to the lot analysis, lighting design is important to the hotel. Keep the view to the broadway street is also crusual since there are not many windows can look out.

HOSPITALITY DESIGN CENTRICITY HOTEL
CONCEPT My concept is Exchanging Hub, which is inspired by the Port of Oakland. It is the place that makes the city prosperous by bringing in the new, and shipping out the goods. It is like our hotel, our target users— the business guests — stay here preparing to bring their new ideas in and their good news back to their company. The cargo— the ideas in their mind or the contracts in their suitcases— will bring another wave of prosperity to the promising city of Oakland. Port is also at the transfer point between the sea and the land. I transferred this concept into the curve and straight line in the floor plan since the feeling of the sea is soft and the land is hard. In the term of the exchanging, there will be some design elements represent the process of exchanging; from hard to soft, from empty to cluster, or some interlocking situation.

SITE ANALYSIS
Good community with all kinds of convenient and necessary facilities. Walkable distance to the public transportation.
Front yards are arranged for every house. Green is scattered around this area. It’s a really pleasant place to stay, however, white people are the majority in this area, and colored people are just in a low percentage. Ref uge es might have dif f icul t y a dapting themselves to this environment; however, they bring the different culture to this place which can be cultivated in a multicultural environment.
Lots of street Parking, parking lot is not necessary. Walkable distance to the public transportation

The main entrance to both community center and the residence are set in the North. (Safer) An entrance to the cafe of the community center, which is open to the public. A Backyard can be put here so that the noise from TriMet MAX railroad won't be a serious problem for the users.
According to the site plan, there are roads in the North, the East, and the West. Therefore, the building is located near the up of the property. Also, the residential units are facing east due to the quieter environment and less public sight.

CONCEPT I’ve chosen the pearl to represent the users because the formation of a pearl starts with the intrusion of a grain of sand; through t h e n a t u r a l h e a l i n g p ro c e s s , a b e a u t i f u l lustrous pearl is formed. Unfortunately for every refugee, the journey to America is not always by choice. The effects of natural or man-made disasters and that feeling of being to a stranger in a new country become the unwanted intrusion into their life. Even for the immigrants, there are periods of adaptation, due to different environment or culture. I want to create a community center that can foster a healing process and transform its patrons into strong and vibrant individuals, ready to embrace the new life ahead.
27
The program components are arranged in the plan to reflect Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which includes five aspects: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and selfactualization. Users are guided towards unique destinations, each promoting a sense of safety, healing, connection, and mental and physical well-being. According to Maslow's theory, the ultimate need—self-actualization—is a non-stop goal for everyone. This idea also reflects on my exterior design, which has a wide and tall curtain wall at the back of the building—to where the self-actualization aspect points—representing the unlimited extension of the ultimate goal.

I created a pattern according to the 5 fundamental need of human and came up with this bubble diagram. Basically, it is a symmetrical arrangement to the vertical center axis. The main Entrance and one emergency exit are slightly different from the previous two diagrams. I also add the main interior stair in the front of the house. The space below the staircase also can be a book storage area which is open to the public.

HOSPITALITY DESIGN AMPLITUDE OFFICE SF
CONCEPT My concept is Galaxy, which is inspired by one of Amplitude’s core values “North Star Metric”, which refers to the key measure of success for the product team in a company. Moreover, every product need their own specific North star so it can be made better and more considerable. Not only should the north star be the main goal of the company, but it should also be the guiding star of your life to help you steer through multiple obstacles such as health, relationships, and personal development.
43
Multiple north starts have their own surrounding environments which look like the Galaxy. Everything nearby moves around the center. All the goals you have makes up your personal galaxy. Therefore, a galaxy image will be put in design elements such as surrounding image, multiple circle shape elements at the cafe or consider the graded color representing the different density of the galaxy environment.
