Is There a Troll Under Rochdale Bridge?

KS1

In our re-imagined version of the famous fairy tale, the Three Billy Goats Gruff must cross Rochdale Bridge to get to the grass on the other side on the river. But what’s that lurking under the bridge? Oh no! It’s a fearsome Troll who eats anyone who passes that way!

LITERACY

This new production from Pocket Puppet Theatre adds suspense and drama to an age-old favourite fable. What fate bestows the three brothers? Will they manage to cross the bridge or will they succumb to the clutches of the Troll? This is a fully participatory workshop engaging the children in puppetry, storytelling, music, song, movement and a fun craft making activity. This workshop will also encourage children to imagine what the centre of the town looked like long before the shops, roads and pavements were built providing children with a unique insight into Rochdale in the past.

The Hidden Habitats of the River Roch

KS2

Through poetry, stories and rhymes Can O’ Worms storytelling will reveal the hidden habitats of the River Roch. In the last 100 years the river has changed from little more than an open sewer to a wildlife haven. Pupils will discover the secrets of the bird life that call the river, in the centre of our town, their home. Along the way, the words discovered and used by the children will be crafted into a poem as durable as the river itself. We may not have golden eagles, osprey or flamingos but the birds that do choose to live with us are just as secretive and fascinating.

The following workshops are expert-led and have been designed to encourage reading for pleasure and to enthuse and motivate your students about the joy of reading. Our recommended facilitators include; a poet, a storyteller and an author!

ADAM PERROTT

KS1

Adam Perrott’s Guide to Meddlers and Mischief-Makers!

KS2

Published author Adam Perrott brings his own special brand of humour to KS1 & KS2 audiences with an interactive comedy show about his creations The Odds and their meddling habits. After reading a few short excerpts from his book, Adam invites willing participants to prove whether or not they have “meddling” powers of their own by attempting a series of fun challenges ending in a spectacular and fun finale! “The children were engrossed in the story telling and loved having the opportunity to question an author about how they became a writer and the process behind having a book published.” Marc Kemp, Deputy Head, Parkfield Primary School, Middleton.

NORMAN WARWICK (JUST POETS) Just Poets: Once Upon a Rhyme

KS2

Just Poets deliver a workshop on narrative poetry. Pupils will explore plot lines, interrogate the text and talk to the characters. Pupils will engage in short, dynamic literary exercises in an attempt to answer the big literary questions; Where do stories start? Who do stories belong to? Can we always trust the teller of stories? Where do stories go when we have told them? This workshop will leave pupils with a clearer understanding of their relationship with story and poetry and of why literature can be so important in our understanding of the world.

Just Poets: Where Imagination Begins

KS1 KS2 KS3 KS4

Help Just Poets explore and discover where imagination begins. Together you will try to beat the world record time for writing a poem about your journey to imagination and back. This session includes; jokes, puns, lost letters, ‘Chinese Whispers’, and lots of fun. “Good introduction to poetry which encouraged children to use their imaginations - I will use ideas next week!” Year 2 teacher, Pennines

RAY STEARN (CAN O’ WORMS) Can O’ Worms: Animal Crackers

KS1

KS2

Did you know that peregrine falcons nest right next to Touchstones? Using local wildlife as the starting point your class will explore the whole world of wildlife from worms to whales in stories and poems with Can O’ Worms facilitator Ray Stearn. From the stories children will create a poem to mark the day which they will present to the group. Alternative topic option: Animal stories are a favourite but a workshop can be tailored to your own theme with enough notice given. Stories from books old and new, interwoven with Ray’s original poems and perhaps a rhyme or two form the backbone of the session. Pupils interrogate the story, question the words and discover their own writing skills by creating a unique piece of their own. The magic contained in a can, whether it be full of worms or anything else for that matter, has to be seen to be believed and Can O’ Worms offers a workshop full of wonderment for KS1 and KS2.

See Can O’ Worms other workshop for KS2, The Hidden Habitats of the River Roch, on page 20.

Stone-Age Cave Painting & Pottery

KS2

It is 12000BC and Britain is beginning to warm after the Ice Age. Sit around the fire in our replica cave and discuss what life would have been like for the Neolithic hunter-gathers. Find out how Stone-Age artists used the colours of the soils, minerals and other natural materials to produce pictures of the animals and shapes that were important to them striking images that still survive today to give us a tantalising glimpse into the lives of pre-historic Britain. Finally, each child will use pre-historic techniques to make their own pot like the ones used by early farmers to store food.

Tactile Landscape

KS1 KS2

In response to artwork in the Art Gallery’s stimulating exhibitions, children will be asked to think about the landscapes which give them a sense of place. Is it the landscape surrounding their home or school or another place which they have visited on holiday? Inspired by historic and contemporary works from the Gallery collection and their experience of local landscapes the children will produce a tactile piece of art, combining materials, shape, texture and colour as a means of expression. “It was good for the children to see actual works of art at the beginning.” Year 3 teacher, Rochdale “Best art lesson ever!” Year 6 pupil, Rochdale

Tactile River Roch Landscape

KS1 KS2

In response to artwork and archive material in the Arts & Heritage collections, the class will be asked to imagine how the local townscape might have looked in the past when the Rochdale Bridge was a principal feature of the town centre. In this session children will find out how to capture a 3D view as 2D and the visual tricks artists use to fool the eye. Pupils will be introduced to the rules of perspective and become familiar with art terms such as the horizon line, foreground, mid ground and background. Children will also understand the difference between - and know how and when to apply - aerial and linear perspective. Each student will apply their learning to create a stunning tactile collage making use of a variety of different materials and art techniques including; colour, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Bring the magic of Touchstones to your classroom! OUTREACH: Knitted Nature KS2 Cost: £150 for 2 x 1hr sessions for one class (15 children per hour) or £250 for 4 x 1hr sessions when booked for the same day. Students will explore the biodiversity of flowers through designing and making selected species with wool. The flowers can then be displayed in your school to create an eco-art installation either indoors or out! The whole class will contribute to the making of a garland of knitted flowers using ‘Wonder Knitters’ to form lengths of knitted yarn and also pompoms in this round-robin session. The session will: highlight British flowers and biodiversity, how to improve the school grounds and how to use tools and equipment to investigate and make 3D craft pieces. “The knitting was fantastic and the children really enjoyed it.” Year 5 teacher, Middleton

ARTPLUS & MUSIC

Step into Lowry KS1

KS2

Bring L.S. Lowry’s famous ‘matchstick men’ to life in this humorous drama and art session designed to explore the life and work of this world famous artist. Using his painting ‘Our Town’ from the Art Gallery collection as inspiration, your students will produce their very own version of an industrial landscape in a style typical of Lowry which they can take back to school for display.

Portraits

KS1 KS2

Excite the artists in your classroom by taking part in our art, craft and drama workshop designed to inspire and challenge your pupils perception of portraits. To begin, children will study paintings from the Gallery’s collection. Next, they will use drama, drawing and printmaking to explore their ideas and record their experiences. By the end of the session your pupils will have developed their knowledge of self-portraits; discovered that there are many different ways to represent figures and understand how portraits capture emotion.

Look, Draw & Sculpt

KS1 KS2

This action packed session combines ceramic sculpture making and portrait drawing with self-awareness. Pupils will explore 2D and 3D techniques inspired by our famous Touchstone heads and with help from a trained artist, sculpt a portrait incorporating personal expression and mood. To conclude, pupils inspire an acrostic class poem, capturing their response to the Touchstones and their experience of being sculptors.

The Colour of Music

“It was great, the children loved it and it linked to lots of the Art & Design objectives.” Year 4 teacher, Middleton

KS1 KS2

This workshop has been designed to help pupils unlock the hidden narratives in art and acquire a new descriptive vocabulary through music. No previous musical knowledge is necessary to enjoy the workshop. Beginners and the more experienced are welcome.

MUSIC

Professional musician Alison Cooper will inspire your students to create a short musical performance using the Gallery collection as a stimulus. Working in the relaxed environment of the Art Gallery itself the collection will be brought to life through the exploration of sound.

“The Colour of Music tied in with our sound and hearing science topic. Using paintings as a stimulus to create a piece of music worked really well and the children enjoyed the session.” Year 1 teacher, Rochdale

Please note: An invoice for the total sum will be sent to your school after the workshop has taken place. Full payment is due within the period specified.

SELF-GUIDED VISITS There are no charges for booking a self-guided visit as entry to our building is free. Please note: Booked groups have priority in display areas. It may be difficult to accommodate your class if you haven’t booked in advance.

LUNCH FACILITIES We may be able to provide you with space in which to eat your packed lunch. Please make this request at the time of booking so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

CANCELLATION If you have to cancel a booked session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 or 924938 (Tues-Fri) or 01706 641085 if you are calling on a Monday. Please note: From the moment we take your booking we start to incur costs. So if you cancel we unfortunately have to make a charge and the later the cancellation the greater the cost. We require at least four weeks’ notice of a cancellation to enable us to reallocate your session. If you do not contact us, or we are unable to refill the session, Touchstones Rochdale reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee covering the cost of your booked session. We are a not-for-profit organisation and fees charged cover the freelance facilitator and admin costs incurred. Therefore sufficient notice from you will hopefully allow a facilitator to secure alternative work elsewhere. An administration cost of £10 is liable on any other cancellation reported outside of the four week deadline where a booking has already been processed by the finance team. Outreach bookings: We reserve the right to cancel a session on arrival for health and safety reasons or if the facilitator is prevented by the school from starting on time causing an excessive delay or if we deem the behaviour of the participants during the session to be inappropriate. In the case of such cancellations we will not offer a refund.

In the rare instance that Touchstones Rochdale should ever have to cancel your workshop on the day the workshop is due, we promise to refund you in full (including the cost of any coach you may have prebooked where the coach company will not give you a full refund) and we will also offer you a replacement workshop without charge. Please note: Touchstones Rochdale does not accept liability for any cancellation made by a school due to adverse weather conditions unless the Touchstones Rochdale venue is also affected and unable to open to the public.

HOW TO BOOK

HOW TO BOOK

OUR PROMISE:

LOAN BOXES Please note: You will only be able to book your loan box one term in advance. Your request remains provisional until you have received written confirmation of your booking. The service is currently FREE to users in the Rochdale Borough. We do however charge a nominal fee of £20 for schools and groups from outside the Borough. To request a box please call 01706 924938.

PLANNING A PRE-VISIT? We recommend that you make a preliminary visit before bringing the class to familiarise yourself with the displays. We can support you with this process by providing ideas for activities and further information about exhibitions. (Please see the section in this programme on self-guided visits).

RISK ASSESSMENT Touchstones Rochdale is a low risk environment and injuries to visitors are very rare. We can provide you with a generic risk assessment for self-guided visits and school workshops which take place within our building. However, it is the responsibility of individual teachers and leaders to visit the site in order to conduct risk assessments that are specific to their group and that fulfil their policy requirements.

VISIT OUR SHOP Our shop at Touchstones Rochdale sells a variety of pocket money priced items including stationery, badges and other lines related to the current exhibitions. If you would like to purchase souvenirs, we ask you to limit the number of children in the shop at any one time, to a maximum of ten. You can pre-order prepared goodie bags to save you time. Our shop also contains a wide selection of books on local history and the arts, which would be useful for lesson planning.

ACCESS Touchstones Rochdale is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs with a lift to reach the Galleries on the first floor. There is level access throughout the display areas and the adapted toilet is located in the foyer. There is on-street parking immediately outside the venue for Blue Badge holders (alongside the short-stay parking bays).

WHO DO I CONTACT FOR FURTHER INFORMATION? If you would like to find out more about our service for schools please contact the Education Team: Karen Vine (Education Co-ordinator) Email: karen.vine@link4life.org Tel: 01706 924938 or 924931 (Tues-Fri only)
