Sam Ferranti Sings Sinatra Supported by the Suburban Swing Orchestra

Friday 24 November

Dave Spikey - Juggling on a Motorbike Dave had been working in the NHS for 19 years as a Biomedical Scientist when in 1987 someone uttered the immortal words, “You’re really funny, you should be a comedian” and for some reason, he took them seriously! Only a few short months later he was crowned winner of the national talent show “Stairway to the Stars”. Larry Grayson, one of the judges, told him that it was a close run thing on the night but what clinched the title for Dave was his routine about a juggler on a motorbike. Fast forward 13 years (is that possible?) to Friday 13 October 2000, the day Dave switched off his microscope for good and found himself, the following Monday, sitting on rain swept local car park dressed as a giant berry! So now in 2017 he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his comedy career. In this show he will look back on his remarkable life and his incredible journey from working class lad to Chief Biomedical Scientist to much loved comedy performer and writer via Phoenix Nights, Eight out of Ten Cats, Bullseye, Dead Man Weds, Magnolia, The Royal Variety Show, Parkinson and many more. He often reflects that maybe none of this would have happened and he might still be looking down his microscope today if it wasn’t for the juggler on the motorbike. “He’s premier league” The Times “Relaxed, visual and hilariously funny” Time Out Venue: Middleton Arena Price: All tickets £18 Booking: Buy tickets online at www.link4life.org/ events-entertainment/middleton-arena or call 0300 303 8633. (A transaction fee of 5% applies to online bookings plus a postage charge of £1.50 if required.) Parental Guidance: Ages 16+ 4

Let’s be Frank... treat yourself to an evening of class. The swinging sounds of Frank Sinatra and all the classic songs that made him the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. Delivered with panache by Mr Sam Ferranti and The Suburban Swing Orchestra. Sam is well known in Big Band circles as the singer with timing and delivery to take on these timeless tunes. No mean feat in itself when you consider that Sinatra was known as THE VOICE way back in 1940 long long before the TV show even considered the phrase. Couple this with the extraordinary swing of the 18 piece Suburban Swing Orchestra and you have an evening to remember. A group of the finest jazz and classical musicians, some of them bandleaders in their own right. From the early 1950’s to 1966 Mr Sinatra entered what is considered to be his classic swinging era.

An era of songs, albums an arrangements from the legendary Capitol and Franks own Reprise studios, made in collaboration with the greatest composers and arrangers of the day. Come Fly With us and revel in the sumptuous arrangements that are Too Marvellous for words, charts from Billy May, Nelson Riddle and the hard swinging Count Basie. Featuring exact arrangements transcribed from the original manuscripts. Songs from the albums

The first few singles were all written by the band and these generally reached the top-20. Two cover versions, ‘Three Steps To Heaven’ and ‘Heartbeat’ were released in 1975. These both reached the top ten before Showaddywaddy reverted back to their own material. However, these again failed to reach the top-10, so they went back to cover-versions and entered the top-10 once more. Showaddywaddy During 1973, the band was asked if they wanted to be on TV - the show was “New Faces”. They won one programme in the series and were runners-up in the “All Winners Final” which was broadcast just before new year’s eve 1973. This led to various record companies racing to sign them up. However they had already signed to Bell Records, (the Bay City Rollers and Gary Glitter were also signed to the signed to the same label). The band’s first single, ‘Hey Rock And Roll’ was released on 19th April 1974 and reached number two in the UK charts. Showaddywaddy then hit the UK charts another 22 times until late 1982. These included 10 Top-Ten singles and one number one, racking up a total on 209 weeks in the singles chart - one of the most successful singles groups of all time.
