ALL SAINTS & MARTYRS CHURCH, LANGLEY Wood Street, Middleton, Greater Manchester, M24 5GL The amazing Langley Cross stands some 13 or so metres tall and is housed in All Saints & Martyrs Church. ST MARY’S IN THE BAUM St Mary’s Gate, Rochdale, Lancashire, OL16 1DZ
Saturday 14 September: 10am4pmSunday 15 September: 12-3pm
St Mary’s in the Baum Church was awarded Grade I listing by Historic England in 2015. Rochdale’s ‘Hidden Gem’, it is a rare example of the work of Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960) and is the only church of his design in the northern ecclesiastical Province of York. Modest in design from the outside, the interior is a revelation. Built in 1911, to replace an earlier 18th century ‘chapel of ease’, the church has an unusual arrangement with the main aisle, choir and sanctuary on the south side and (as the church is dedicated to St Mary) a ‘Jesus’ Chapel on the north side. Pillars and unusual roundel windows are from the original church of 1742. The church has an exquisite carved oak rood screen and a striking, Comper designed, War Memorial window. Refreshments will be available.
