And, what’s more, there’s also a brand new cross-curricular workshop called, ‘Tree-Rific Scientific Maths!’ with Dr. Oliver Bishop courtesy of funding from The City of Trees. We have slightly increased the cost of a Touchstones-based workshop this year from £2.17pp to just £2.50pp (based on 30 children per class) to help us continue to deliver our fantastic value-formoney programme. Anglo Saxons: Competitive Kingdoms!

Bring the magic of Touchstones to your classroom!

KS2

OUTREACH: Anglo Saxons at War!

Cost: £75 (1hr 30mins) Dates: Workshops available throughout the year Time: 10am – 11.30am & 1pm – 2.30pm

KS2

Cost: £150 for a single 2hr morning or afternoon session. (£250 for two 2hr sessions or £300 for three 90mins sessions when all are booked for the same day).

Explore a time when England was divided into several, smaller kingdoms, each one thinking itself better than the rest. Because of this, Anglo Saxon England became a very competitive place. Your pupils will find this out as, in between building manure covered houses, making beer and telling stories, they will compete in traditional Anglo Saxon games such as archery and sword fighting.

Dates: Available throughout the year. Please call to arrange a suitable date. Becoming a warrior in the Anglo Saxon homelands of Denmark and the Netherlands was every child’s dream. To be able to protect your family and hopefully go down in history as a legendary hero (such as Beowulf) was the goal. By the time they fully settled in England, this dream changed to one of fighting for your Thegn and King – to be in a great army and protect your lands from Vikings! And so, pupils will be trained as pagan, Anglo Saxon warriors and then as Christian Anglo Saxon soldiers. They will complete physical tasks, learn battle tactics and even confront a Viking hoard! So sharpen your sworn and don your armour – it’s time for battle!

There better be no crime committed though – as the penalty for this is being thrown into a river! Anglo Saxon life can be quite harsh!

“It covered lots of LO’s … about Anglo Saxon life. The children absolutely loved it and asked if Oliver could be their teacher instead of me!” Year 5 teacher

(Whitworth) Romans:

Hadrian vs. The Picts!

Cost: £75 (1hr 30mins) Dates: Workshops available throughout the year Time: 10am – 11.30am & 1pm – 2.30pm

KS2

The year is AD 122 and Emperor Hadrian has had enough of the Scottish Picts invading Roman England. His plan? To build a wall of course! But he will need an army to do this. Your pupils will become that army – learning about Roman Britain while developing their marching skills, explore how to fight in formation and wear replica Roman armour. Once they complete this task they can relax in a Roman bath house and eat snails, drink wine and wipe their bottoms with a sponge on a stick! Ewwwww!

“Another fantastic workshop. Really well organised and enjoyable for children (and adults!) We will be back.” Year 4 teacher (Todmorden)

Bring the magic of Touchstones to your classroom!

OUTREACH: Become a Roman Soldier! Cost: £150 for a single 2hr morning or afternoon session. (£250 for two 2hr sessions or £300 for three 90mins sessions when all are booked for the same day).

KS2

Dates: Available throughout the year. Please call to arrange a suitable date. The Roman army was a well-oiled machine! Each soldier was highly disciplined. They knew their purpose and would strive for dignified perfection! Can your pupils follow suit? Well, you’re going to find out as they train, exercise and battle just as Roman soldiers did. Their stamina, willpower, dedication and discipline WILL be tested!

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS Ancient Egypt: Life along the River Nile Heritage Gallery 27 May 2017 – 21 April 2018 Be transported down the Nile into ancient Egypt and discover this fascinating world through centuries-old exhibits from the land of the pharaohs. Preserved and buried for thousands of years, the stunning objects in this exhibition range from a set of canopic jars to small pieces of intricate jewellery. Featuring objects from Rochdale’s own Egyptian collection, this exhibition spans over 4,000 years of history. Many of the items in the exhibition were excavated by the famous Egyptologist, Sir Flinders Petrie and donated to the museum by Charles Heape, a Rochdale industrialist. Learn about the incredible story of Petrie and his amazing finds which transformed our understanding of ancient Egypt and archaeology. Please see pages 8-9 for more information about the activities you and your class can enjoy during your visit.

Jessica Rankin: Stone/Folding Gallery Four 21 October – December 2017 Appropriating methods traditionally identified with ‘feminine’ pursuits - embroidery and needlework - New York-based artist Jessica Rankin’s work often takes the form of organdy ‘embroidered paintings’. Having learned to sew as a child in Australia, Rankin returned to embroidery after graduating from art school in the USA. In its nature methodical and repetitive, needlework has the capacity to let the mind wander. Drawing on this, and combining text and image, her embroideries resemble mental maps (or ‘brainscapes’ as she often refers to them), working through recollections, impressions of places and immediate experience. Stone/Folding premieres a new series of drawings and embroideries inspired by one of the Parthenon Sculptures at the British Museum, believed to be the Greek goddesses Aphrodite and her mother Dione. From this starting point, Rankin’s work expands to explore a range of seemingly disparate, yet interwoven, subjects from the complex relationships between mothers and daughters and the constellations in the night sky to the British Empire, Brexit and the refugee crisis. Echoing the importance of language in her practice, Rankin has also invited the critically acclaimed poets Amy Key, Sarah Howe and Brenda Shaughnessy to explore and connect with both her work and the same Parthenon Sculpture. Their words will form part of the exhibition display and also be performed at a special live event organised in conjunction with the Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival. HOW TO BOOK

HOW TO BOOK

cost/payment

cancellation Self-Guided Visits There are no charges for booking a self-guided visit as entry to our building is free. Please note: Booked groups have priority in display areas. It may be difficult to accommodate your class if you haven’t booked in advance.

Lunch Facilities We may be able to provide you with space in which to eat your packed lunch. Please make this request at the time of booking so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

Loan Boxes (EGYPTIAN BOXES only 1,2,3 & 4) Please note: You will only be able to book your loan box one term in advance. Your request remains provisional until you have received written confirmation of your booking. The service is currently FREE to users in the Rochdale borough (terms and conditions apply). We do however charge a nominal fee of £20 for schools from outside the borough. To book - please see page 9 for details.

Planning a Pre-Visit? We recommend that you make a preliminary visit before bringing the class to familiarise yourself with the displays. We can support you with this process by providing ideas for activities and further information about exhibitions. (Please see the ‘self-guided visits’ section on page 12).

Workshops at Touchstones Rochdale If you have to cancel your booked session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 (Tues-Fri). • From the moment we take your booking we start to incur costs. So if you cancel we unfortunately have to make a charge and the later the cancellation the greater the cost. We require at least four weeks’ notice of a cancellation to enable us to reallocate your session. If you do not contact us, or we are unable to refill the session, Touchstones Rochdale reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee covering the cost of your booked session. We are a not-for-profit organisation and fees charged cover the freelance facilitator and admin costs incurred. Therefore sufficient notice from you will hopefully allow a facilitator to secure alternative work elsewhere. An administration cost of £10 is liable on any other cancellation reported outside of the four week deadline where a booking has already been processed by the finance team. • In the rare instance that we should ever have to cancel your workshop at Touchstones Rochdale on the day the workshop is due, we promise to refund you in full (including the cost of any coach you may have pre-booked where the coach company will not give you a full refund) and we will also offer you a replacement workshop without charge. Please note: Touchstones Rochdale does not accept liability for any cancellation made by a school due to adverse weather conditions unless our venue is also affected and unable to open to the public.

Risk Assessment Touchstones Rochdale is a low risk environment and injuries to visitors are very rare. We can provide you with a generic risk assessment for self-guided visits and school workshops which take place within our building. However, it is the responsibility of individual teachers and leaders to visit the site in order to conduct risk assessments that are specific to their group and that fulfil their policy requirements.

Visit Our shop See page 12 for details about ordering souvenir goody bags and available resources for teachers.

Access Touchstones Rochdale is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs with a lift to reach the Galleries on the first floor. There is level access throughout the display areas and the adapted toilet is located in the foyer. There is on-street parking immediately outside the venue for Blue Badge holders (alongside the short-stay parking bays).

WHO DO I CONTACT FOR FURTHER INFORMATION?

If you have to cancel your booked outreach session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 (Tues-Fri). • Schools who cancel outright on the day of the workshop or within four weeks of the date of the workshop will be obliged to pay the full cost of the workshop. • Please give as much notice as possible should you wish to reschedule a date – a minimum of four weeks is required. • Should a freelancer unfortunately not be able to deliver your session due to unforeseen circumstances, we will immediately organise an alternative date by mutual agreement. As a gesture of goodwill you will receive a discount of 10% on the cost of your rescheduled workshop. • Please note: We reserve the right to cancel a session on arrival for health and safety reasons or if the facilitator is prevented by the school from starting on time causing an excessive delay or if we deem the behaviour of the participants during the session to be inappropriate. In the case of such cancellations we will not offer a refund. N.B. THE TEACHER MUST STAY WITH THE CLASS THROUGHOUT THE SESSION AND IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN DISCIPLINE.

If you would like to find out more about our service for schools please contact: Email: schools@link4life.org Tel: 01706 924931 (Tues-Fri only)
