UNTIL OCTOBER
Sport HEYWOOD SPORTS VILLAGE Discover more about Rochdale’s proud sporting history in this display of unique memorabilia and local stories. Step back in time to learn more about Rochdale’s very own baseball team, the Rochdale Greys; the growth of the Hornets rugby team and the boroughs excellence in professional swimming. The display will also celebrate the wonderful achievements of local Olympians who took part in London 2012.
UNTIL 21 SEPTEMBER
Annie Pootoogook GALLERY THREE Annie Pootoogook came from a long line of artists in Cape Dorset, Canada. Her drawings, peppered with images of daily and home life, challenged the conventional expectation of Inuit graphic art. Curated by Dr Nancy Campbell, this exhibition is part of the Liverpool Biennial touring programme. Supported with National Lottery funding through Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring fund. Annie Pootoogook at Touchstones Rochdale is supported by Canada Council for the Arts.

UNTIL 2 NOVEMBER
Protest and Peterloo HERITAGE GALLERY In 1819 around 60,000 men, women and children from across the North West, marched peacefully into Manchester to call for parliamentary reforms to secure more rights for themselves. This ended in blood shed as the local magistrates sent in the cavalry to disperse the crowd. 700 people were injured and 18 were killed. This became known as The Peterloo Massacre. FROM OCTOBER
Natural History HEYWOOD SPORTS VILLAGE Take a peek at some of the amazing Natural History objects that form part of our museum collection. Wonder at the variety of objects, from bird eggs to fossils and shells and taxidermy and botanical specimens.
To commemorate the 200th anniversary the museum will be displaying a range of objects from the collection with incredible stories linked to Peterloo, including the only surviving banner that was marched from Middleton by a group led by Sam Bamford. The exhibition will also include a project with Rochdale Borough’s Youth Parliament and Children’s Council and props from Mike Leigh’s film ‘Peterloo’. There will also be a programme of exciting events and activities around the borough related to the exhibition.
Learn more about the objects and the individuals and groups that collected and donated them.

14 SEPTEMBER – 7 DECEMBER
Maeve Rendle: Sodden GALLERY ONE In 2018, Maeve Rendle premiered a ‘live’ performance (What cannot be turned aside) at Touchstones. For this follow-up exhibition (Sodden) Rendle revisits this work in the new form of an installation incorporating text, sound and silence. What was previously a short time-based exploration of the alchemy of human communication in relation to recent political events, becomes a slow meditation on what could have been, or could still be.
ONGOING
Rochdale’s Collections MUSEUM As well as our changing exhibition spaces, we have a dedicated permanent museum which aims to tell a potted history of Rochdale in a fun and friendly way. The museum is ideally suited to families and people with an interest in the history of Rochdale. There are interactive displays, hands on exhibits, films, audio and a wide range of objects from the Borough’s collection on display.
UNTIL FEBRUARY
Radicals and Rebellion MIDDLETON ARENA Linked with the commemoration of Peterloo this display looks back at Rochdale borough’s proud liberal heritage, celebrating the individuals and societies who have fought for social and political change over the last 200 years. From local anti-slavery supporters, who starved during the Cotton Famine to fight for equality in America, to the Pioneers whose principles remain the foundations of the Cooperative movement today. The rebellious people of Rochdale borough have played an important role in pushing for change on a national, and even international, level.

Jamie Fitzpatrick: He He He He He GALLERY THREE & FOUR Jamie Fitzpatrick’s art explores how totemic public gestures and figurative rhetoric (such as the flags, sculptures, monuments and plinths) are used to impose forms of power and control upon the viewer. Inspired by Rochdale’s collection of artefacts relating to the Peterloo Massacre, Fitzpatrick has created the new multi-media installation. He He He He He features a colourful cast of characters and their ruminations on ideas of masculinity, power, authority and national and gender identity.

The Mystery of the Raddlesham Mumps Matthew Linley Creative Projects In association with Action Transport Theatre and Eastern Angles presents Murray Lachlan Young’s. A gothic tale which will make you and your family shudder and laugh out loud! Celebrated poet and broadcaster MURRAY LACHLAN YOUNG (Radio 4, Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music poet in residence,) stars in this thrilling new family performance perfect for audiences young and old! After the windswept double funeral of his parents, 7-yearold Crispin (or Crispin de Quincy de Faversham Clumps to give him his full name) inherits his ancestral home – Raddlesham Mumps. He finds himself in a huge empty house with only an ancient butler for company. And when that butler, Kenilworth, begins to tell him about the bizarre and hilarious deaths of his deeply eccentric ancestors the story takes flight on darkly comic wings. The acclaimed Raddlesham Mumps mixes compelling story telling with a brilliant musical score (by Arun Ghosh), oodles of theatricality and a touch of exquisite silliness. A ‘theatrical treat’ thats perfect for lovers of Harry Potter, Tim Burton, Lemony Snicket and The Brothers Grimm!

Written by Dan Rebellato “That’s beautiful. Sparks in the air. Like glitter hanging in the sky.” Emily wakes up one bright autumn morning to find that her feet can’t touch the ground, and no one can understand why. To everyone’s surprise Emily keeps rising higher and higher. From sleeping upside-down on her ceiling and flying above her school playground, to soaring over a starry-skied London, Emily’s adventure is just beginning. Emily discovers a world that looks completely different. She’s not scared at all – it’s fun being high up. But she’s not coming down… Written by Dan Rebellato Directed by Oliver Hymans Puppets designed by Alison Alexander Set designed by Rachael Champion Music composed by Patrick Furness
