Welcome Welcome to our exhibitions and events guide, listing everything happening at Touchstones Rochdale over the next 4 months. We hope you will enjoy visiting and participating in our offer.

Hello! We have some real treasures at Touchstones Rochdale to see you through the next few cold months. Warm yourself up on the superb range of exhibitions, performances and workshops on offer in our unique building. January in the art gallery sees the final weeks of Rachel Kneebone’s The Dance Project, her almost kinetic ‘sculptural choreography’. This exhibition ends 12 January and to mark its final day in Rochdale we have something rather special; a remarkable group of women from across the Borough have been working with acclaimed choreographer TC Howard to make a new dance theatre piece to celebrate Rachel’s work. Join us in the galleries to bid farewell. Did you know that we have over 1500 works in the Borough’s fine art collection? We’re often asked by visitors why we don’t display them all, so artist Harry Meadley has set us the challenge to present as much as we can in our galleries. But what if we tried? will explore how we attempted to tackle this challenge and gives you an insider’s look at what goes on behind the scenes. To help us to display some extra pieces, we’ll also be using the display cases at Middleton Arena so make sure you visit to see what’s there. A Postcard from Rochdale proved a huge hit last year and returns again. Entries are invited to use our collection as inspiration and submit postcardsized artwork to be in with a chance of winning a £100 cash prize. Our Heritage Gallery displays an intriguing collection of health-related objects from our museum collection as From Herbs to Hospitals celebrates 70 years of the NHS. It also includes Rochdale Borough Sports and Culture Awardshortlisted What’s Your Medicine? created by local people who attend the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Cafes in the Borough. In March, we’ll be launching Borough Beats, a history of music in Rochdale from the 80’s, co-curated with local young people and accompanied by a series of hands-on activities. See the ‘Workshops’ section for more information.

We have a whole range of things to do for families, from exploring space (watch out for the alien slime) to our regular Tiny Touchstones sessions and Elmpenny’s Museum a brand new multi-sensory theatre show for under 5’s. Follow us on Facebook for reminders of family activities especially during the school holidays. We also continue with our regular programme of hands-on activities: adult crafts, Knitty Gritty, mindfulness, Friends of Rochdale Art Gallery, gallery tours and more. Interested in local history? What our Local Studies team don’t know about the Borough probably isn’t worth knowing – drop in and test them out! Finally, take a break from the winter in the cosy Art Café with excellent coffee, wonderful food and free Wi-fi. You probably deserve a cake too! We looking forward to seeing you soon

Exhibitions Rachel Kneebone: The Dance Project Until 12 January Gallery One, Two, Three & Four British artist Rachel Kneebone is widely recognised for her practice in which complex porcelain sculptures express physical metamorphosis and movement. Her work has frequently been described as ‘sculptural choreography’ or ‘dance made static’. This exhibition, The Dance Project, features new work that furthers her questioning into the experience of inhabiting the body. As Kneebone writes: “I have always been fascinated by dance: how bodies meld and merge, how new forms are created by dancers, and how dance allows us to escape to a different space and language. My work is also deeply concerned with movement, form and space.” To mark the end of the exhibition, join us for a very special performance on Saturday 12 January. See page 8 for details.

A Postcard from Rochdale 19 January – 18 May Gallery One Having proved a hit in its inaugural year, we return with the second edition of our annual open art exhibition A Postcard from Rochdale. This time established artists, amateurs and schools were invited to seek inspiration from our rich and diverse permanent collection of over 500 paintings and submit their artworks to the size of a postcard. Top prizes awarded by an esteemed judging panel include £100 and the chance for one of the lucky entrants to have their postcard reproduced and for sale in our shop! Harry Meadley: But what if we tried? 2 March – 1 June Gallery Two, Three & Four Intrigued by the fact visitors often ask us why we don’t show more of the over 1500 works in the Borough’s fine art collection, artist Harry Meadley set us the challenge of attempting to display as much of the collection as possible in a single exhibition. Spanning three galleries, But what if we tried? presents the result of this attempt. As much about the process as the exhibition, the final display will also include a multi-part documentary filmed by Meadley featuring the Touchstones staff as they endeavour to realise this impossible task. A unique and unmissable opportunity to see a large proportion of the collection on public display, and discover more about all the conservation and research work that goes on behind the scenes. From January to July 2019 To coincide with this exhibition, we will also be displaying a selection of rarely seen works from the fine art collection at Middleton Arena.

From Herbs to Hospitals: Health and Wellbeing in Rochdale Until 13 April Heritage Gallery Learn more about the development of health and well being in Victorian Rochdale through to the advent of the NHS in the 1940’s. This exhibition will look at how medicine and healthcare went from being a luxury for those who could afford it to a service available for everybody. Featuring a range of objects that have never previously been displayed and have been donated to the museum collection from various donors including Birch Hill Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary. Highlights include a beautiful wooden home medicine chest, a selection of poison bottles and a nurses uniform alongside a selection of medical instruments and a horrifying dental drill. Working in partnership with Manchester University to celebrate the NHS turning 70, the exhibition will tell the stories of local people and their experiences of the NHS through a series of oral history recordings. There will also be loaned objects from the Museum of Medicine and Health. The show will also include a display created by people living with dementia who attend the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Cafes within the borough.

Borough Beats: Music from 1980’s to now From March Museum Celebrating the Heritage Lottery Fund project Borough Beats and co-curated by a number of young people from across the local area, this display focuses on music and popular culture from the Rochdale borough from the 1980’s to the present day.

19 January 7.30pm | £12/£10 By Adam Z Robinson. A trio of delightfully thrilling new ghost stories, set to the haunting sounds of the violin. The Book of Darkness & Light contains within it some of the most chilling tales ever told. Supernatural mysteries stir from its pages. You feel a prickle on your neck. Your blood stills. A monstrous thing creeps in the shadows. Is it all in your mind? A trick of the light? Or something far more sinister? One thing is for certain: these stories will give you shivers. A co-production between Harrogate Theatre, Square Chapel Arts Centre and Little-Mighty. “A uniquely terrifying experience.” - The Spooky Isles “Absolutely captivating.” - Audience Member Age 14+

Muckers

12 April 11am and 2pm | £3 Paloma has always mucked about with Pijon. They love it. They run wild. They dress up. Like tigers, flamenco dancers, queens, kings, rabbits and Lady Gaga. Everything. Life is fun and funny and a little bit loopy. Created by award-winning theatre maker Caroline Horton and an international ensemble, Muckers is a funny, magical, physical production for ages 5+. With original songs and quite a lot of Spanish, this mischievous show asks what it takes to stand proud and be true to ourselves, and how we empower the next generation to do the same.

Oh No It Isn’t! 19 April 7.30pm | £6

They’re the best of sisters onstage but the worst of friends off it. It’s the final performance of Cinderella in a moth eaten, regional theatre and backstage tensions threaten to boil over onstage. Will the egotism, oneupmanship and sexual politics remain confined to the dressing room? Will the ugly sisters keep the professional professional and the personal personal? Will we ever find out what happened during Babes In The Wood?

This show is not suitable for children. Press on Luke Adamson’s previous work:  Break A Leg on ODD MAN OUT  The Good Review on FOUND

Based on a lifetime of experience onstage and backstage Oh No It Isn’t is a hilariously funny and beautifully moving new play exploring the highs and lows of life in the theatre. Written by and starring Great British Pantomime Award nominee Luke Adamson and using real anecdotes and stories it is an impassioned yet tender love letter to the world of performance.
