Hearing the collective voice ARTICAL BY ADARTSUI

Getting out of the Admiralty station, in a second you will be overwhelmed by protest-related materials, yellow ribbons, umbrellas, banners, stickers, to name some. Why umbrella? The name “Umbrella Revolution” has been circulating since the first few days and eventually becomes the protest. More still protest art emerges out of a call for art to be connected to a wider audience, and to open up spaces where the marginalized can be seen and heard.

Lennon Wall Hong Kong (Photo by James@Orsau) It is one of the most public artwork contributed by the protesters. Thousands of sticky notes with messages responding to the movement fill up the pavement outside the government compound. You are free to leave a message with pens and sticky notes provided. It is a wall of expression, idea exchange and acceptance. You do not only leave a message, you are also stunned by impressive words. Umbrella Man by ‘Milk’ (Photo by James@Orsau) Same as every protester, the umbrella man does not step back with just an umbrella in hand. It does not represent a particular person, but anyone in the game.

BASQUIAT AND FRIENDS ROLAND HAGENBERG 7 NOV - 28 DEC 2014 Sin Sin Fine Art 53-54 Sai Street Central, Hong Kong The exhibition is Roland’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Roland Hagenberg is a writer, photographer and filmmaker who grew up in Vienna, Austria. His explorations of New York in the 1980s –where his photo-series on Jean-Michel Basquiat originated. His passion is traveling. It is his way of understanding an ever and quicker changing world. Roland was award the Austrian Tourism Innovation Prize in 2014.

The Lion Rock Banner (Photo by Lam Yik Fei/Getty Images) It goes beyond a static artwork and reaches new heights with the ‘Lion Rock Spirit’. The banner says it all: that life is bittersweet, but that Hong Kong people are still all “in the same boat below the Lion Rock”.

When the story unfolds, the humble umbrella symbol seems very likely to be written into the history. It might be too weak for defense, but with hundreds of thousands holding their umbrella, do you still reckon it is not powerful enough?

FESTIVAL IN THE CITY

CLOCKENFLAP

FESTIVAL IN THE CITY Rudimental getting the Clockenflap crowd to feel the underground London vibe at Replay Stage.

The Clockenflap crowd is buzzing off the great vibe.

Every festival I have been to, has always been in the middle of nowhere. Clockenflap is my first music festival in asia. Seeing all the amazing musicial performing in the middle of a big city with all the skyscappers as the backdrop is definitely a once in a life time experience. The weekend-long festival is back this November for its 7th year and today the festival feels reassuringly established due to the fact it has honed its musical programming and cultural ephemera to perfection. Yet for some reason, the event feels excitingly new, and this year’s showcase for a rich and unique swirl of contemporary music suggested why that might be. Clockenflap is a chilled out weekend which compliments the musical line-up with delicious food, a series of creative workshops and a strong focus on a family friendly atmosphere. Set in West Kowloon Cultural District with the whole festival surrounded by the beautiful harbour and skyline of Hong Kong. Clockenflap gave me a special weekend in the concrete jungle. Every year, the line-up for Clockenflap is getting better and better, names are bigger and bigger. Mogwai, The Vaccines, James Zabiela, Kool & The Gang, Travis, Rudimental, Tenacious D, Nitin Sawhney, The Flaming Lips… This is a sign of a festival becoming recognised in the industry, both locally and internationally.

Baltimore's finest underground electro-noise winner - Dan Deacon started this giant dance contest to keep the crowd live.

Kool & The Gang playing that jazzy funk soul

The organisers of Clockenflap clearly want their punters to have a good time throughout their stay: away from the music, there is so much to participate in. For example, if you fancy watching a movie while you are there, you could pop to the Cinema Silenzio tent for a short film; or if you feel like shopping, you can go for a quick walk in the Craft Market.

REVIEW

HAKGWAI X TAKA

A didgeridoo musician from Hong Kong and a hang drum player from Japan, two travelling buskers from different culture met in Central just a few weeks ago. World music connected the two buskers together. They are two extremely talented people who are just doing what they love and sharing wisdom and life experience through music. How did you guys meet? H: We met Taka on a bridge near Central Pier while he was busking. I was walking around that area and I heard Taka playing his music and thought that he was really great, so I walked up to speak to him. How long have you guys been busking? H: I have been busking for nearly one year now. T: Actually I am pretty new to busking, I only started around two months ago. What are your instruments? H: My instrument is called Didgeridoo, it is from Australia and it has been around for about 1500 years. It is made from hardwood, usually from the main trunk of the tree. Breathing techniques are very important for playing Didgeridoo. It took me a long time to master that.

T: My instrument is called Handpan. It is also known as Hang drum. The first Handpan appeared in 2007. The sound of Handpan is really relaxing and soothing. What is the most difficult thing about busking in Hong Kong? H: The most difficult thing about busking in Hong Kong is finding a spot without being disturbed by the police. The police are actually quite disrespectful to all buskers. They treat us like criminals. What they do not understand is that by disrespecting me, they are only disrespecting themself. I feel sad about it. Actually, this is happening all around modern cities, especially modern cities in Asia. But we can change it! Little bit at a time, but I am sure we can change it.

Then he took of his clothes and asked me to sign his wife’s name on his chest and the reason was that his wife’s name means a lot to him.

What is the funniest moment you have had while busking? H: I remember one time, when I was busking in Lan Kwai Fong. There was a drunk Indian guy asked me to sign my signature for him. Then he took of his clothes and asked me to sign his wife’s name on his chest and the reason was that his wife’s name means a lot to him. So I signed it and he walked away. Actually this is just one of the funny busking moment I had, there are a lot of them and everyday is fun. T: When I was busking in Denmark, there was a happy drunk beggar dressed really funky. He came up and sat next to me while I was playing. And then after, he said ‘Hey, you are so good! Give me some money!’ And so I gave him a coin and then he left.

If you have to describe your music or your inspiration with 3 words, what would they be? H: Freedom. Compassion. Wisdom T: Life is sad. Life is hard. Life is good. What is your favorite genre of music? H: Metal music, I am also a vocalist in a Metal Band – Chock Ma. Recently I am really into world music. T: I am also into world music and that is my favorite music at the moment. What is your plan for the future? H: I hope I can keep playing music and keep travelling around the world. And live happily with my friends and family. T: I want to play music for people who are experiencing a hard life and influence people using music.

COVER STORY

JAMES MAK

James Mak, Founder & Creative Director of Orsau. Born and bred in Hong Kong. A youngster who is dying to get away from his hometown. James as Linkupzine Vol.2 creator, he got his inspiration from a song by The Fugees: “My posse Uptown wear the mask. My crew in the Queens wear the mask. Stick up kids with the Tommy Hill wear the mask. Yeah everybody wear the mask but how long will it last.” He illustrated the darkness of living in a modern city like Hong Kong. Everyone you meet in the city can be two-faced. It is almost like they are all wearing an invisible mask. He portrays himself as a skeleton giving a thumbs-up to everyone wearing animal masks. I am done guessing who is wearing a mask and who isn’t.”
