URBAN DESIGN PROJECT
Landscape Design
GUANGZHOU INTERNATIONAL INNOVATION CITY, GUANGZHOU, CHINA, 2015 Collaborated with Annie Hansel and David Meyer
The Guangzhou project is a collaborative urban design project with WoodsBagot, Guttmann Blaevoet and Sherwood. Our work is to address on the landscape design. Breaks in the existing wall create a more vibrant and interesting waterfront recreation and commerce area. Pushing appropriate commerce out to the water’s edge in certain areas allows for unique waterfront shopping and dining experiences and provides waterfront plazas to host cultural events. The penetrations through the river wall occur at the mouths of existing canals, allowing water to circulate and filter through terraced wetlands, cleansing the water and introducing civic pride. A sculpted green mound, used for climbing, sitting and prospect views, will be sculpted from the existing hill on site. On axis with the internal roadway, the green mound, which references the existing geomorphic topography, acts as an exclamation point and a destination. A surrounding lawn provides space for kite-flying and taking in views of the river. Islands, dotted with weeping willows, dance their way from the core out to the water’s edge. This ecological strategy will give a final cleansing to the water as it flows through. The banks of the wetland park are accessible through a series of immersive boardwalks and pathways, which connect the Pearl River Waterfront to the Civic Core. The architecture and the landscape are interwoven in this area, as the structural podiums fold down to meet the wetlands, willows and flowering trees laced between the islands.

A CONTEMPORARY PEACH BLOSSOM SPRING-YUJIAPU,TIANJIN, CHINA Using the concept of The Peach Blossom Spring as the theme, this project tries to create a new life style, where people live in harmony with nature as well as a sense of place. The Peach Blossom Spring is an ideal community that comes from an ancient Chinese story. It is a utopia people desired in the Jin Dynasty. In this story, people escaped to a hidden place to escape the war. There they enjoyed themselves and lived in a smooth and peaceful state. They create a selfsustainable world without any support from the exterior society. In this project, the fantastic scenery will reappear: the fruit trees blooming in the waterfront space; the aquatic habitat allowing people to touch the water, and play with fish; and the urban park to provide more program spaces for people. Beyond simply creating the beautiful landscape, this project intends to emphasize functional use with a more positive attitude. Landscape is not only the refuge for people to evade the outside world, but also an effective tool to help people create a healthy environment. In this project, the landscape is treated as infrastructure to deal with the flooding and pollution issues which plague this site, as well as to combine with a social mission for people to use the various spaces in daily life, in order to offer a better living environment.

The project aims to connect Brunswick’s Identity, Heritage, and Ecology to the WellBeing of Individuals and Society. To the east of Coastal Highway 17 lies the irreplaceable salt-water marsh. Innovative design must protect these vital resources from high volumes of storm water runoff while protecting the urban form from storm surges and rising sea levels. The existing conditions of Coastal Highway 17 divide Brunswick from one of its most historically and culturally significant features. In order to reduce or eliminate such division, the redesign of the right-of-ways must occur.

Establishing a clearly defined entryway is critical to the creation of place. Brunswick’s Gateway, Coastal Highway 17, does not connect people to the rich cultural and historical context of Brunswick. In order to create a sense of shared public place along the corridor and the creation of a distinct identity, a multi-way Boulevard has been established. Vegetation, medians, landmarks, pedestrian and bicycle paths are used to establish identity, and create a cohesive entry along the path while humanizing the hardscape.

The Linear Park located between Hwy 17 and the marshlands, connecting Glynn County to the Regional Bike Path, will provide fitness trails, scenic marsh overlooks, water treatment and opportunities for adult and youth education. This sensory rich place will provide residents and visitors an opportunity to interact with and experience the saltwater marsh. The lack of adequate land and vegetative buffers between the impervious asphalt and the marsh is out of compliance with the Coastal-Supplement, and solutions are required to treat the Group C and D soils surrounding Hwy 17. Native vegetation will be used along the marsh edge to enhance and encourage the natural environment. Hwy 17 is used as a buffer between the harsh urban environment of cultivated plants and the native vegetation along the marsh.

This project integrates the cultural and natural aspects of the city into a district with a strengthened unique identity. New Orleans’ rich heritage of Jazz introduces a tempo and rhythm into the urban fabric by equating land uses with tempo notations on the higher land. The ubiquitous presence of water in New Orleans is celebrated by introducing new streams, canals, and reservoirs into the low lying areas of the district. The project is a palimpsest (used in similar context in a variety of disciplines, notably architectural archaeology) seen in three phases. The objective of this proposal is to establish the bars of the measure that connects the bars with the staff lines which hold the urban “notes,” from residential to civic and park areas.

The lower parts of the district can be used for vegetation and natural collection/detention ponds. A cultural hub connecting with the natural area creating the bridge between nature and human habitation will be created to reconnect with adjacent neighborhoods blending Man and Nature by restoring and uncovering the streambeds, and creating green corridors that can connect the neighborhoods and becomes their shared focus. The conversion of vacant land into wetlands and natural habitat will develop the identity of the Upper Ninth Ward ensuring a central role in the life of the community. The use of the existing connection to the river as well as the Industrial Canal’s integrated infrastructure will build local identity and civic pride. The creation of an interconnected network of streets and public open space, putting the focus on the uncovered streambeds, will create good addresses for the existing residential development. 24 NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION-Upper, Ninth Ward-New Orleans, LA
This proposal seeks to use the historic natural levee termed “Sliver by the River� to develop and increase density in both the human and natural habitats in the ward. The east proposed green space and recreational development is designed with various heights creating a big step levee, detention pond, retention pond, and a dike to be used as a buffer between the human habitat and nature in case of flooding.

New Chinese Style Community

This project was inspired by Chinese traditional culture. Wuhan is a famous city with rich cultural heritages. The community located in Wuhan must reflect local culture and unique identity. In addition, the existing layout is extremely symmetrical, coordinating with the traditional Chinese architecture pattern. This project aims to create an ideal habitat, convey the historic culture, and meet contemporary requirements. To show the inheritance of the history, we use traditional Chinese elements: hills, water, gardens, and forests in landscape design, dividing this area into 16 different theme spaces, to show the hills, water, gardens, and forests in every area. By using different spaces, we represent the feeling of enclosure, layers, progression, and privacy. Meanwhile, the detailed Chinese patterns also convey unique traditional Chinese characteristics.
Hills Hills: Limit the space, make the focus points with pavilion and porch.
Water
Water: Increase the layer for landscape in limited spaces. The diversity of water was the important point in this project.
Gardens Gardens: Consisted of special local shrubs, Magnolia denudata, cherry blossom, peach tree, and lagrstroemia indica.
Forests

The project, called Coordinated Garden, is located in the Guanggu district in Wuhan, a top quality community. In this stage, our design range is area B, surrounded by the area A and area C, which have been both constructed. Construction planning is extremely rational and fair. No matter which direction, it has symmetrical distribution. This makes the landscape uniformly welldistributed and makes the inter-house courtyard landscape space have a similar scale and feeling. The key problem of this landscape design project is how to break the monotony of building space and increase the identity of the home path with the intervention of landscape design.

Landscape value analysis The buildings near the main road may be affected by noise. However, the private courtyard can be enlarged to increase value. Convenient transportation as the buildings are adjacent to the central landscaping axis. Quiet and comfortable, as the buildings are located at the central axis. The project is located in the northwest of Langfang city, really close to the capital of China, Beijing. The project started in 2008, the same year the Olympic Games were held in Beijng, and ‘sport’ became the hottest word of the year. Considering this trend, we decided to build a sport theme community with ‘exercise’ as its core. West Main Entrance Planting Design Use deodar cedar as background plants to break the uninspired skyline. The well-designed color-leaved trees with different shape increase the vitality of the landscape. All the trees chosen were local plants. The well-designed scenic wall faces to the main entrance. The red figure effectively conveys the sport theme of this community.
