01 Statement Phygital materials are new materials digitally invented, or certain existing materials manipulated to behave in a manner that can not be achieved in the physical world. Phygital materials are new materials digitally invented, or certain existing materials manipulated to behave in a manner that can not be achieved in the physical world. The infinite possibilities allowed by 3d software can subvert our perception of materials. Architects’ attitudes towards materials result in vastly different architectures. From Kahn’s whispering bricks to Venturi’s flattening treatment on surfaces, architects always acknowledge materials, at least in the physical realm, while totally disregarding the digital ones. Although digital materials/ shaders/textures are usually still considered as only a type of surface treatment or representation of the physical world, we believe architects need to take a stance and be more aware of digital materials, in such a time where digital tools are unavoidable in the design process. This thesis attempts to explore how phygital materials can be more than just surface treatment, but have an impact on other qualities of architecture, such as forms, tectonics, perception of space, etc., and thus changing the way we design architecture and objects. The aim is to take advantage of the limitations and opportunities in the digital operations in 3d software, to explore the hidden qualities that are embedded in the digital world.
Our workflow to investigate phygital materials is to manipulate physical elements in digital environments. In our proposal, phygital materials are always invented acknowledging the physical aspect of materials, either we choose to follow or intentionally disregard the rules. Materials are challenged to do unexpected things and the goal is to create a sense of strange familiarity. Different from most digital textures, we are imagining materials with digital tectonics, three-dimensionality, and sections. Materials still follow certain rules and have unique properties in a digital manner: thickness, hardness, density, solubility, or even possible ways of virtual fabrications and scale limitations, etc. A phygital material library/inventory would be designed, generated and then applied on assets extracting from existing architectural projects and objects, with the scales varies from teaspoon to a house. The scale and status of these assets would be disrupted at the same time, with the adoption of this new materiality. By challenging the conventional linear workflow in the design process, we believe new objects/elements can be produced.

02 Precedents Blurring the lines between the physical and the digital, phygital material chanllenges our perception of the digital, showing that it can be used to create seemingly physical objects with unique properties. We believe that in the age of digital technology, the role of architects needs to be re-defined. We want to address this issue by exploring the opportunities laid in the digital world, which is, to be more precise, the use of phygital material, and how this material can change the way we design architecture. In the age of The Big Flat Now, there is no hierachy of value in the digital world. Marble and wood is considered the same in the digital space. This allows us to rethink the way we treat materials. We examined differet ways of treating materials by architects/designers/artists, ranging from the most physical towards the more digital ones. Some of them are meterials that are inspired by or created based on exisiting materials, some are materials without physical reference, but fabricated in the real world.

Architects having different attitutes towards materials were also exmained. While Kahn wants to have a conversation with bricks, asking what they want to be, Zumthor sees materials as new opportuties within architectural construction; Mies wants to misuse I beams for decoration on purpose; For Venturi, materials are just like cardboards, flat and purely visual. 2020 Spring Thesis Prep

HOUSE(S) and everything in the house "Total design has two meanings: first, what might be called the implosion of design, the focusing of design inward on a single intense point; second, what might be called the explosion of design, the expansion of design out to touch every possible point in the world. In either case, the architect is in control, centralizing, orchestrating, dominating. Total design is a fantasy about control, about architecture as control. 05 Formal + Material Studies We attempted to create some customized materials in Cinema 4d. Our goal is to create a sense of interiority and three-dimensionality, imagining them as actual materials within the digital context, which would have impact on geometries, rather than just surface treatment for pre-exsiting forms.
