Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, five-time Emmy-nominated actress Marla Gibbs wears many hats: mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, actor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and icon. An internationally beloved celebrity, she was a staple in our homes for nearly two decades — as the witty, wisecracking maid Florence for 11 seasons on the CBS hit comedy, The Jeffersons, and as the loving matriarch Mary for 5 seasons on theNBChitseries,227.

Adapted from a groundbreaking stage play produced by her daughter, seasoned director/actor Angela Gibbs, Marla made history as the executive producer for 227. Not only did she advocate for diversity behind the scenes, she stood her ground when executives wanted her character to be a single mother. Her vision won out and 227 was a top-ranking show with two loving parents raising their daughter as a family unit. Morality and innovation have long been part of Marla’s journey. She used her resources topourintothecommunityinnumerousways:sheopenedajazzsupperclub, co-founded a performing arts school and theatre with her daughter, and has supported countlesscommunityorganizations.

Marla’s rise to stardom started with humble beginnings. After relocating to Los Angeles to rebuild her life after an abusive marriage, she studied acting at the Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles (PASLA), the Mafundi Institute, and the Watts Writers Workshop. She starred in a host of local theatre productions and small films before landing the plum role of Florence in the acclaimed sit-com, The Jeffersons. Soon Marla would bring a new project to Norman Lear and the sit com 227made it’s debut, running for 5 seasons. Marla has since had recurring roles on Passions and The Hughleys, and gave stellar performances in the critically acclaimed films The Visit, El Camino, and Stanley’s Gig. Beyond acting, Marla’s first love is music. She co-wrote and sang the 227 theme song, and in recent years, released her own original jazz album, It’s Never Too Late — which is a motto she lives by. The project partnered her with musical legends HB Barnum and GeraldWiggins, alongwithhergrandson,AmilGibbs, anawardwinningproducer.

At 90 years young, she continues to do cameos in television and film projects, ranging from This Is Us, NCIS, Days of Our Lives, Blackish, UnPrisoned and Will Trent to name a few. MISSIONANDVISION

The African Textile Museum (ATM) is dedicated to revealing ‘Textiles’ as one of civilization’s oldest art forms and that many of the techniques employed in today's worldwide fashion industry originated in Africa. Preserving the creative processes, presenting, and sharing the knowledge as widely as possible and building on that cultural history as we move boldly into the future is the mission. Our vision includes the return of quality craftsmanship to the status it once held in society and to maintain that respect while embracing a new generation of creatives, tools, technologies, and approaches from agriculture to production to merchandising.

OVERVIEW

The museum programs are designed to ignite the interest of Africans, African Caribbean’s, Americans, and Diaspora Africans in participating in the Garment and Textile Trades and exciting consumers to explore our fashion and lifestyle productions. We will conduct our programs by facilitating channels of communication, collaboration, education, inspiration, and financial exchange. ATM will explore combining human ingenuity and skills with current and future technology tools to propel the creatives to higher levels of achievement across channels. The African Textile Museum programs will strive to strengthen and raise the platform for the presentationofAfrica-inspireddesignontheworld’sstages.

African Textile Museum (ATM) will provide education and business development support services to primarily African and African Diaspora populations in the Textile and Fashion industries. ATM employs communications technology as its primary information and service delivery channel. ATM’s array of Internetbased services will assist small providers in reaching national and international consumer and industry markets, improving the knowledge base and capability of industry workers, and training those in underserved communities for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in the target industries. ATM will also serve the needs of consumers of textile and fashion products by facilitating access to designers, textile creators and culture creatives African Diaspora-wide. ATM will work to facilitate a blending between science and African textiles where there is the hope to save lives and preserve the health of our planet’s climate.
