Lion History
CELEBRATING 45 YEARS
In the 1970s, entrepreneur, environmentalist, and chemist Bill Taggart wanted to start a business that combined his passions for science and the environment. While consulting for a local printing company in New Jersey, Taggart quickly realized that the DOT requirements for hazard labels and placards were causing confusion for industry professionals. Each day, he answered clients’ questions about how, when, and why these labels and placards should be used. To save time, he created a DOT training course to explain the requirements for labeling hazardous chemicals in plain, simple language. William P. Taggart (Bill) July 28, 1941 to January 4, 2019
“I admire Bill’s contributions to industry. I can only hope that I can make a positive impact on the lives of others like Mr. Taggart.” Rene G., Quality and Safety Coordinator, Austin, TX
That’s when Taggart put aside two growing businesses he’d built from the ground up—a tank-testing business and an environmental consulting business—to focus full time on training. His goal: to simplify environmental regulations for the people in industry, so they could focus on what they do best. Lion Technology was born! Over the next two years, Bill worked privately with companies to help them understand the new Federal requirements that impacted their operations. All the while, Bill was getting calls from former clients across the country, asking for help with the regulations.
“Bill was a stickler for knowing regulations. That training has served me well in my career.” Jerry H., LSRP and Sr. Manager, Montclair, NJ
4 Lion Technology Inc. / 2022 Course Catalog
In 1979, Lion presented the first EPA regulations workshop in Newark, NJ. When Bill arrived, the room was packed with nearly one hundred eager professionals, ready to find out how to stay in compliance. By 1981, Lion needed more space to house a growing staff of expert instructors and regulatory researchers.
