IATA Air Shipper Training

To ship hazardous materials by air with most major carriers, including FedEx and UPS, shippers must comply with stringent requirements found in the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations (IATA DGR).

IATA requires all “hazmat employees” to complete training once every 24 months (IATA DGR 1.5).

IMDG Vessel Shipper Training

Hazmat vessel shippers must ensure compliance with modal-specific rules found in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code).

The IMDG Code requires training every three years for hazmat employees involved in preparing shipments for transportation by vessel (IMDG Code 1.3.1).

New York Hazardous Waste

New York is like nowhere else in the world. Your state’s hazardous waste rules are no exception! Master the NYSDEC rules you must know to keep your site in compliance. NYSDEC requires annual training for hazardous waste personnel. [6 NYCRR 372.2(a)(8)(ii) and 373-1.1]

Washington Dangerous Waste

One variation from the Federal regulations is easy to spot right away for generators in Washington—the state refers to regulated wastes as “dangerous wastes.” The differences don’t end there.

Washington DOE requires annual training for dangerous waste personnel. (WAC 173-303-200(9))

Hazard Communication and Hazmat Safety Training

Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous chemicals must receive training to protect themselves and others. OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard or HCS requires training for employees at the time of job assignment (29 CFR 1910.1200(h)(1)). US DOT mandates hazmat safety training as part of the “hazmat employee” training required at least every three years (49 CFR 172.704(a)(3)).

HAZWOPER Training

INITIAL HAZWOPER TRAINING AND ANNUAL REFRESHERS.

Employees at risk for hazardous substance exposure during cleanup or emergency response operations must complete appropriate training under OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard at 29 CFR 1910.120.

HAZWOPER Contaminated Site Cleanup

Site workers at “uncontrolled hazardous waste sites” (i.e., Superfund sites and other cleanup sites) must be trained before participating in or supervising field activities. These courses provide training required for site workers and supervisors under paragraph (e) of the HAZWOPER Standard. Refresher training is required annually [29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8)].

Upgrades the 24-hour training for occasional site workers to full 40 hour training required for regular site workers and supervisors.

Covers additional topics for supervisors to supplement initial 40 hour training.

HAZWOPER Emergency Response

Workers who respond to or may encounter an emergency hazardous substance release must be trained to identify and perform their responsibilities during the release. These courses provide HAZWOPER training required by OSHA at 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6). Refresher training is required annually.
