Heart of the West

By Brent Tanner Utah Cattlmen’s Association Exectuive Vice President
attlemen, I am pleased and excited to introduce you to the Utah Cattlemen’s Association’s first issue of The Utah Cattleman Seedstock Edition. One of the guiding principles of the Utah Cattlemen’s Association (UCA) is to “improve the quality of cattle and beef produced.” We hope as you are making your management decisions this year, you will consider the benefits of purchasing quality animals and genetics to improve your cattle herd. The type of animals raised and the quality of beef they produce are the source of great pride for ranchers in the beef industry. As you shop through this publication, take time to recognize the efforts our ranchers have made to bring us top quality in our beef and cattle production. On the UCA logo are the words “Heart of the West.” The state of Utah and Utah ranchers truly are the heart of the West, both in location and in quality. With interstate highways intersecting our state from all directions, Utah is a great place for shopping for and finding quality livestock. The breeders represented in this publication have spent generations selecting and improving their genetics to benefit the livestock industry and their family businesses. In addition to the quality genetics they produce, our local cattle ranchers are top quality in the way they do business with their fellow ranchers. Here at UCA, we work daily to protect and defend the rights of cattlemen and women and promote the beef industry. We have dedicated leaders – ranchers just like you – who devote their time and talents to lead the cattle industry in our state. As stated above, we have a set of guiding principles. These principles chart the course for our association’s efforts and activities. Those principles are found here. I would like to thank each and every UCA member for your dedication and contribution to these principles

Building Beef Demand
By Jacob Schmidt, RDN Utah Beef Council Director of Marketing
The Utah Beef Council (UBC) is working hard to ensure that your Beef Checkoff dollars are being used effectively and judiciously. Projects are chosen that will maximize effectiveness and help increase the sale of beef. The UBC will continue to advertise via radio ads throughout the year. Ads will focus on beef nutrition and how beef is both satisfying and delicious. Partnerships will take place with radio stations during March Madness and throughout the grilling season. Plans are in the works to partner with a steakhouse chain to help promote choosing beef in their restaurant. In addition, Team Beef is up and running again for this year. They are a team of runners that will compete in the Wasatch Back Ragnar race and represent beef. This gives beef and its nutrition profile great exposure to runners and those that are into health and fitness. The beef council will continue with retail promotions such as a recent one with 42 Associated Food Stores for a prime rib holiday promotion. Each of the 42 stores participated in the promotion by giving away a prime rib beef roast to two lucky winners. All shoppers received one entry for the giveaway for every $20 they spent on fresh beef from the meat case. In-store radio announcements were played to complement the point of sale signs at the meat case that explained and promoted the giveaway. Additional promotional support was given via digital billboards, web posts and online banner ads. The UBC provided checkoff funds to help pay for radio advertisements highlighting the promotion. The instore signage was also paid for by the Utah Beef Checkoff. This promotion has a great track record for being a wise investment of checkoff dollars. Shoppers have been shown to be more likely to purchase up in $20 increments to ensure maximum amounts of entries in the contest. The UBC will continue to partner in promotions such as this to leverage checkoff dollars as much as possible. The UBC has strengthened its television presence recently by teaming up with Fox13 News for a 13week promotion on their Fox
8
UTAH CATTLEMAN SEEDSTOCK EDITION
Cafe lunchtime segment. Each segment will take place on Tuesdays at 11 a.m., and will be hosted by cooking host Jennifer Burns. Segments will be available to view after airing on Fox 13’s website. All segments will feature beef with a variety of guests appearing with Burns. In conjunction with this promotion, television commercials have been produced to highlight beef as the ideal comfort food. Viewers will be reminded of beef ’s ability to bring family together for a satisfying and delicious meal. Online and digital advertising will be included as part of the promotion and to help augment the cooking segments. These ads will point people to the UBC’s website for additional information and recipes. The UBC is excited to continue working with Chef Bryan Woolley. Woolley has been a professional chef for nearly two decades. He can be seen daily on CBS television teaching culinary lessons that empower the home chef to take charge of the foods they prepare and serve. Not only can he be seen on a daily cooking show, he also hosts a weekly TV show called “Cooking with Chef Bryan.” In addition, he teaches cooking courses, writes newspaper articles in regional and national publications, and gives guest appearances on national networks like the Food Network. He is the longest running TV chef on air today in the United States. The beef council participates as one of his show sponsors and has guests featured on his weekly cooking show. Through the Beef Checkoff, Woolley participated in a beef industry chef tour. This gave him valuable insights to how the beef industry works and he has become a strong champion for the beef industry and beef ranchers. Bryan has the ability to reach a wide audience and is a trusted third-party source for beef information. If you have questions or comments about any of the Beef Checkoff programs, please contact the Utah Beef Council and we would be happy to discuss any program with you.

The earth is flat.
Titanic is unsinkable.
MLVs are safe for pregnant cows.
But new information can tell a different story 1 about modified-live vaccines (MLVs)—as evidenced by a new university investigation that found an association between on-label use of MLVs and IBR abortions. In a July 15, 2012 article published in JAVMA,2 researchers reported a reproductive loss of 25%. Ultimately, use of MLVs in your breeding herd is up to you. Please consult your veterinarian to discuss vaccine options, like Vira Shield ®: the number one selling inactivated viral vaccine safe for your entire herd, even pregnant cows and heifers.
MLVs are not your only option.

A Golden Age
By Paul Dykstra Beef Cattle Specialist, Certified Angus Beef

oday’s cow-calf producer faces a world of opportunity. Perhaps never have the feedlot and stocker sectors been so hungry for cattle, after seven years that exacerbated our steadily shrinking beef cow inventory. Macroeconomics and supply-demand fundamentals have ushered in what looks to be a veritable “golden age” for the cow-calf business. Production costs on the ranch are high and surely going higher, so you may wonder about this golden age, but that’s just part of it. You see, costs are also high for buyers of calves and feeder cattle. Not as high as when corn was more than $7/bushel, but still going up with the record prices paid for cattle and their own perpetual rise in overhead costs. That’s why buyers (let’s just call them feedlots) have a great need to minimize risk. I won’t try to convince you that feedlots don’t buy poor quality cattle at lower prices and try to “upgrade” them—some feeders specialize in doing that very thing. But in the end, a whole lot of feeders would rather buy from the middle to the top end. They want to buy cattle that will stay alive and healthy, efficiently convert feed to beef and produce a highly valuable carcass that packers and consumers demand. In

Feed conversion is simply the pounds of feed (drymatter basis) required to create one pound of live animal weight, typically displayed as a ratio of feed to gain. Recent data from Shawn Walter at Professional Cattle Consultants in Oklahoma shows the average calf-fed-steer feed conversion ratio in the U.S. is 6.2-to-1 (pounds of feed to pounds of gain). After health status, feed conversion is the second most important measure of value in the feedlot. Using current economics and the 6.2 conversion, it would cost about $680 to add 800 pounds to a 550-pound steer to achieve a final shrunk finished weight of 1,350 pounds. Just a 5 percent improvement in feed conversion would be 5.89-to-1, reducing the total cost per head by $32.10. That may seem like a small margin of improvement, but it’s significant to cattle feeders happy to lock in a profit of $25 per head. Advances above this 5 percent change are certainly achievable through selection of genetics for performance and gain. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) for yearling weight and the “$ Feedlot” index value from the American Angus Association can help in making progress. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) EPD is another useful tool for selecting bulls that sire calves capable of gaining more weight on the same feed as their contemporaries. Finally, carcass value has become extremely important for feedlots measuring profitability and value-added traits. That value comes mainly from the intramuscular fat (marbling) as measured by USDA graders at the ribeye between the 12th and 13th ribs. The 2013 Choice advantage over Select boxed beef stood at $9.61/cwt. as of December. The packer typically shares about half of that with the feeder when cattle are sold on a carcass-value or grid basis.
20
Utah Cattleman Seedstock Edition
That amounts to about $40 per head on an 850-pound carcass. Producers of Angus-type cattle can add from $3/ cwt. to $6/cwt. more for each Certified Angus Beef ® brand carcass that meets all 10 of those brand specifications, for $25 to $50 per head on top of the Choice premium. Today’s advanced genetics have been able to achieve amazing levels of carcasses reaching the Prime grade. With a typical industry average at just 2.5 percent Prime, it’s been a challenge for anyone to consistently hit that mark. However, we’re seeing more and more well-bred cattle hitting up to 20 percent Prime. Doing so is almost as good as hitting a jackpot in Las Vegas since packers are paying from $14/ cwt. to more than $30/cwt. for Prime carcasses on top of the Choice price. Cattle feeders and packers will fight for cattle that have the genetics to garner those premiums. Selection for marbling and ribeye size works well on these highly heritable traits. With EPDs backed by DNA testing, even young bulls will serve. The Angus $-Value indexes such as $Grid and $Beef combine several key traits with economic data to provide one helpful number. Progeny from high-$Beef bulls can please cattle feeders and packers alike. There’s no point in doing all of this only to drop off the calves at a market and go home. The difference between great and average marketing today is as wide as Grand Canyon, so it really pays to engage. Write something that goes beyond weight, delivery date and vaccinations. Why not describe the genetics? Add carcass data and feedlot performance of past calf crops when you can. If you’re not that far along, you can still describe all of the bulls purchased in the past five years as in the upper X percentile of the breed for the traits buyers want. There are many lists of cattle feeders online that you can target with mail, email or phone calls. This approach may sound logical, but it’s still fairly unique to take it straight to the feedlot managers and owners actively seeking high-quality calves.

REBUILD FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS. Angus Means Business: Demand for Quality is Up
The next couple of years will see unparalleled opportunities to expand your cow herd. But considering the investment it will take to rebuild numbers, why make it a risky proposition? Angus females are the industry’s best-known risk reducers, allowing you to rebuild with confidence — not guesswork. They’re backed by the industry’s largest and most comprehensive genetic-evaluation program, providing you with unmatched capabilities to expand your herd with precision, reliability and peace of mind. Plus, the Angus breed does a better job of helping you balance calving ease, growth and quality.
The wholesale beef demand index was developed by Kansas State University to accurately estimate demand by accounting for changes in price, sales volume, inflation and population. Each year, it’s expressed as an index or percentage value relative to the base index value of 100.
Since 1990, registered Angus cattle have shown a rapid genetic increase in weaning weight and yearling weight accompanied by a documented improvement in calving ease, while offering milk genetics to match a variety of environments. And, Angus females have proven that consistent, reliable maternal genetics can be accompanied by improved carcass merit. That’s opened the door to value-based marketing opportunities for producers who’ve embraced the quality revolution.

Record Fall Feeder Cattle Prices in 2013 Could Be Exceeded in 2014!
his past year, 2013, was a good one for most Utah cow-calf producers. There were challenges due to lack of precipitation in many areas of the state, but from what I heard, most producers were able to find the grass to get through the summer. Fall calf sale prices were record high with most 500-pound steer calves bringing between $165 and $175 per cwt., depending upon lot size and cattle quality. This past year’s monthly prices for 550-pound steer calve at Producers in Salina, Utah, have been 2 percent lower than prices in 2012. While, prices were lower in January through July, prices from August through December were higher than the prior year. So, while the annual average price, based on monthly data, was lower, it is likely that a cattle volume weighted annual price would have been higher as more feeders are marketed in the fall. Looking at October-November prices, they were 12 percent
higher in 2013 relative to 2012. What is driving these higher calf prices? Most of the strength in calf prices can be attributed to the relatively

tight supply of cattle. As a result of declining beef cow numbers, the 2013 calf crop was the smallest in over 50 years. This past fall corn prices also declined sharply from around $7.50 per bushel in the fall of 2012 to under $4.50 per bushel during the fall of 2013. That decline in corn price was the primary driver in the increasing calf prices this past fall. Beef demand also remained strong in 2013 likely showing some increase over 2012. This has supported higher beef prices and has a result higher fed cattle prices. Has a result, feedlots finally started to show some positive returns, after about a year and a half of negative returns. That also contributed to higher fall calf prices. So, how high are the current calf prices relative to past prices and relative to other agricultural commodity prices? A plot of historical steer calf prices from the Salina auction market from 1990 to 2013 is displayed in the graph below. It is obvious that the price for a steer calf has doubled since prices from the mid 1990s. However, we know that the price of diesel, hay, trucks and most other items a rancher needs have increased in that time period. Those Utah steer calf prices were adjusted for inflation using 2009 has the base year and are plotted in the figure below. Alfalfa hay prices and corn prices were also adjusted for inflation and plotted in the same figure. We can note that after adjusting for inflation, calf prices have not changed that much in the past 24 years. The last two years are only slightly higher than the ...continued on page 30 VOLUME 1

inflation adjusted prices of 1990 and 1991. Inflation adjusted alfalfa hay prices were also fairly stable for most of the past 24 years until the last couple of years. It is quite evident that alfalfa hay prices for 2012 and 2013 were considerably higher than any previous year’s price. Increasing hay exports is likely one factor for these higher alfalfa hay prices and that strong export demand will likely continue this next year. The dramatic increase in the inflation adjusted corn prices is also obvious. Prices are double of what they were in the early 1990s and there has been a threefold increase since 2005-2006. While there are several factors that likely contributed to this, the increase in demand for corn to fuel government mandated ethanol certainly was a major factor. If corn prices remain in 2014 where the futures market is predicting, then prices will fall back to around $4.50 per bushel, which will still remain historically high. Do these record high cattle prices also imply record profit levels for producers? Short answer: NO. I am always hesitant to say how 30
Utah Cattleman Seedstock Edition
profitable ranching is or is not in any year because operations do vary greatly in their resources and costs. Numerous studies have documented cost differences of more than $200 per cow for ranches in the same state. However, I am fairly confident that most Utah ranchers realized a profit in 2013. Those who had to buy expensive hay would likely have been less profitable, but good operations that raised their own feed may have seen returns of $250 per cow or more. Looking forward to 2014 will probably be more of the same for cow-calf producers. Calf and feeder cattle prices will likely be even higher in 2014 relative to 2013. Using the futures market as a predictor, calf prices may be $5-$10 per cwt. higher in fall 2014 compared to fall 2013 prices. There is evidence that producers are starting to retain a few more heifers
to try and build back cow herds and that will further tighten the supply of feeder cattle available to enter feedlots. If corn production is anything close to trend line yields in 2014, then corn prices should remain in the $4 range which will be supportive of higher calf and feeder cattle prices. If the drought conditions moderate in 2014, than cow-calf producers will likely see higher profits in 2014 than in 2013. However, there is some concern about the present snowpack and the outlook for ranges and irrigation in the summer of 2014. If producers are forced to purchase higher priced hay to supplement shorter range resources, than profits would likely be lower than in 2013. While the markets appear to be friendly for cow-calf producers in 2014, it remains to be seen if Mother Nature will also be kind or not. VOLUME 1

The Benefits of Using DNA-Technology on Your Operation
he success and sustainability of any business is directly related to operators’ ability to recognize and meet the demands of whatever market that business is serving. Consumers have access to vast amounts of information upon which purchase selection is made and a global high-tech marketplace from which to obtain chosen goods.
The beef industry is challenged with adapting to a global economy and satisfying the demands of the market. Emerging genetic technology coupled with traditional production practice can help producers provide the high quality products demanded by consumers while maintaining or improving the profitability of their individual operation. Genomic (DNAbased) technology can be especially helpful in two aspects of cattle production: selection of breeding population and animal identification.
Terminology
A basic understanding of genomics, the science of inheritance at the molecular level, requires one know meanings of terms used within that field of study. The following definitions will help in understanding the context of information presented in this article. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) Chemical contained in all living organisms with the information required for growth, development and maintenance. Microscopically, DNA resembles a ladder that has been twisted to form a spiral (double helix). The rungs of the ladder, known as base pairs, are composed of four distinct molecules (nucleotides) identified by the letters A, T, C and G; these fourmolecules are arranged in long sequences that provide the codes required for life. Chromosomes Cellular structures each containing a single length of DNA, containing many genes, and proteins wound tightly into a compact package. Chromosomes are arranged in pairs containing one from each parent. Chromosome numbers are species-specific, cattle possess 60 (30 pairs) whereas humans possess 46 (23 pairs). Gene A DNA sequence that codes for a specific protein.
Locus (plural loci) The specific location or site of aparticular gene on a chromosome. Allele One member of a pair or sequence of forms of a gene which occupies a specific site on a chromosome. Trait A measurable or observable characteristic of an individual, i.e., coat color, birth weight, marbling, etc. Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) A combination of genes contributing to expression of a polygenic or quantitative trait Genetic Markers sequences of DNA that can be used to identify genes or individuals. SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism) A genetic marker characterized by the exchange of one nucleotide for another, for example A for G. Heritability The proportion of phenotypic variation in a population that is due to genotypic variation in individuals. Measured 0 (low) to 1 (high). Phenotype An observed category or measured level of a trait in an individual. Genotype Genetic composition of an individual. Polymorphism Detectable variations in the composition of a gene or trait.

deliberate fraud. Conventional ear tags and their electronic counterparts provide little potential for positive identification once an animal enters a processing facility. DNA profiling, on the other hand, utilizes unalterable genetic sequences that are unique for every individual animal. Unlike methods that rely on devices attached to an animal or its products, use of DNA profiling uses the animal itself or its products as means of identification. DNA profiles of individuals are obtained from analysis of tissue, typically blood, semen, hair or skin, collected from animals in an early stage of production. Electronically recorded DNA profiles can be used to identify animals throughout the production process. Samples can be collected at any point, analyzed and traced to their source. Parentage Parentage, in particular paternity, identification is another potential benefit provided by DNA profiling technologies. In production systems utilizing multiple bulls turned out with the cows, or grazing co-ops in which members each contribute bulls, identification of offspring sires can be difficult and potentially detrimental to genetic improvement in the herd. DNA profiling of calves identifies their respective sires, facilitating complete documentation of pedigree and of performance data throughout the calves’ lives. Positive sire ID can help producers assess, based on offspring numbers and performance, the relative fertility of each bull. Accurate documentation of bull performance aids culling decisions and helps ensure operations progress toward herd genetic and production objectives. Summary Today’s fast paced, high-tech, global market presents the beef industry with challenges to satisfy consumer demands while protecting the integrity and profitability of producers in every stage of the process. Continual herd genetic improvement is a vital component of industry success; implementation of emerging DNA technology into existing selection practices will improve accuracy, consistency and profitability.

The International Perspective By Erin Borror US Meat Export Federation Economist
I
n the United States, we are fortunate to have a large, affluent population of beef eaters. But exports have allowed us to diversify our consumer base and capitalize on economic growth throughout the world. Exports add value to every animal and there is plenty of room for growth, but we face a number of challenges on the international front. Two major issues will continue to impact trade over the coming years: market access and drought. December 2013 marked 10 years since the first U.S. case of BSE closed most of our international markets. The road back has been long and painstaking, including candlelight vigils in Korea, highly politicized protests in Taiwan, and a 20-month age restriction in Japan. But Japan and Hong Kong each lifted restrictions on U.S. beef in February 2013, facilitating a surge in exports for the year. As markets reopened, the U.S. Meat

USMEF expects U.S. beef growing importer of beef. In 2013, exports to China would hit $500 China imported about $1.3 billion million in the first year of access, worth of beef – nearly five times with $1 billion in sight within the as much as in 2012. This trend is first 5 years. USMEF estimates expected to continue as China’s that beef exports to the region domestic production cannot (China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and keep pace with growing demand. it by far the largest beef-importing region in the world. The U.S. is uniquely positioned to help meet growing global demand for high-quality, grain-fed beef. Even though our herd is at its lowest level in recent history, we continue to produce the most beef in the world. And, along with Canada, we are by far the most efficient. In terms of sustainability, researchers are now realizing that the U.S. model has significant benefits. We still face challenges, however, as our progressive industry often adopts technologies before the rest of the world, resulting in trade restrictions. In other cases, countries such China and Russia tend to embrace the European ideal, opposing use of all growth promoting feed additives and hormones. Russia banned U.S. red meat early last year due to beta-agonist residues, and the market remains closed. The U.S. was not the only casualty, as Mexico and Canada’s exports also suffered due to Russia’s restrictions. In December, Russia even placed restrictions on Australia’s exports due to residues from the growth promoting implant trenbolone (which is also used in the United States). Looking to the supply side, drought will continue to limit www.UTAHCATTLEMEN.org
global beef supplies over the near term. Smaller production and a strong dollar have made U.S. beef relatively more expensive than our major competitors. Australian beef production surged in 2013, as drought translated into about 15 percent more beef. This brought a corresponding increase in exports, with huge growth to China and the Middle East. Brazil also produced and exported more beef, but this was the result of herd rebuilding after liquidation ended in 2006-2007. Despite many challenges, U.S. beef exports hit another record in 2013, valued at about $6 billion, and up 55 percent from 2003. Perhaps more tangible, export value averaged nearly $240 per head of fed slaughter in 2013, up 76 percent from 2003. There are plenty of opportunities for growth, especially if the cowherd starts to expand. All of our international customers want to know when there will be more U.S. beef! Until then, our job of marketing the value of high-quality U.S. beef will be even more vital, so that export demand
continues to help support higher cattle prices. Future opportunities include free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Trans-Pacific Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP, between the U.S. and EU) which would reduce trade barriers. TPP would lead to lower duties in Japan, which has reclaimed its position as the largest market for U.S. beef ($1.4 billion in 2013) despite a very high duty rate of 38.5 percent. In the meantime, we continue to see benefits from existing FTAs. NAFTA has helped to integrate our North America market, with Canada and Mexico accounting for $2 billion annually in U.S. beef exports, making them priceless trading partners. Duties are also being phased out in Korea and several key destinations in Central and South America. While the next few years will be full of challenges, the beef industry can continue to look forward to added value through exports. Rest assured that USMEF understands the unique cultures of our overseas customers, and our 13 international offices use the best in-market intelligence to represent your product each and every day.

R&R Genetics consists of three families running cattle operations in Northern Utah. Our cattle run on US Forest permits where they range at elevations reaching 9,500+ feet. Water is scarce and trips of 2-3 miles are common from one watering hole to the next. This is why we have chosen to run Angus and Simmental cattle. Both breeds offer a strong maternal instinct, solid milk flow and reproductive efficiency. This is coupled with great dispositions, strong carcass traits and good feet and legs. Our high elevation cattle bred in the west offer top end genetics at affordable prices. We implement a strong ET program and vast AI protocol. If you are looking for strong Angus, Simmental, and SimAngus® genetics, be sure to look us up March 22, 2014!

Rural Roots
By Spencer J. Cox Utah Lieutenant Governor
New State Leader Values Agriculture Community “Representative Cox, this is Governor Gary Herbert. I am anxious to speak with you. Please call me as soon as you can.” That is the entire text of a very unexpected voicemail I received on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. I was born and raised in Sanpete County, a sixth generation Fairview resident. Although we began as dairy farmers, my dad sold the cows when I was young, but continued farming 150 acres – mostly alfalfa. My summers were spent moving sprinkler pipe, plowing fields, hauling hay and herding sheep with my cousins. My wife was raised on a ranch in Mt. Pleasant and could milk a cow, buck bales and dock lambs with the best of them. However, like many rural kids, we could not wait to get away and swore we would never come back. After graduating from Snow College and Utah State University, I was accepted to the Washington and Lee School of Law in Lexington, Virginia. Looking forward to working on complicated issues in a law firm environment, you can imagine my surprise when, while interviewing with a very prominent attorney at one of the largest and most competitive law firms in Washington, D.C., he said, “I only have one question for you—have you ever hauled hay?” I was offered the job. The D.C. opportunity notwithstanding, we decided that we wanted to move back to Salt Lake City where I clerked for Federal District Judge Ted Stewart and went to work for a large law firm. However, following the birth of our third son, we recognized that something was missing in our 58

life. We soon realized that the things we valued most in life had come as a result of how we were raised—and significantly—where we were raised. After a great deal of discussion and introspection, the answer became very clear. We decided to return to Fairview. Accepting a position as vice president and general counsel with CentraCom, a rural telecommunications company, I had the opportunity to hone my business skills, work with my kids on the family farm and give back to my community. I was appointed to a vacancy on the city council, served as Fairview City Mayor, Sanpete County Commissioner and, in 2012, was elected to the Utah House of Representatives, representing Sanpete and Juab counties. During this time, I also had the opportunity to serve as a co-chair, with then Lt. Gov. Greg Bell, of the Governor’s Rural Partnership Board. There, I was tasked with advising the governor on rural economic development
issues, including the importance of agriculture in our state. I felt like I had the perfect life. I married my high school sweetheart,
had a great job in one of the most beautiful places on earth and was raising my own children on the family farm. What could possibly go wrong? Like many in our State, I was surprised at the announcement that Lieutenant Governor Bell had decided to resign and return to the private sector. Speculation on potential replacements ran rampant culminating in a newspaper piece handicapping the top 30 candidates. Not surprisingly, there were no candidates from rural Utah (unless you count St. George as rural, which the authors did). As such, you can imagine my shock when I received that fateful September voicemail from Governor Herbert. There was, however, one hitch: If I accepted the position, I would have to move my family to Salt Lake City. This was a deal breaker for us. It was bad enough that I would be spending large amounts of time away from my family, but my children absolutely needed the support system of extended family and friends that existed in our rural home. Even more important, however, they needed the lessons of sacrifice and hard work that could only be taught on a farm or ranch. Fortunately, the governor agreed. So now I make the 90-minute commute from my house to the Capitol on most days, and spend a few nights each week in my uncle’s basement in Bountiful. As the lieutenant governor, of the great state of Utah, I have a unique opportunity to highlight the challenges and opportunities that exist in rural Utah I often joke with the governor VOLUME 1

that the reason Salt Lake City is one of the greatest cities in the world to do business…is that you can drive an hour and no longer be in Salt Lake City. For those that live on the Wasatch Front, it can be easy to forget that milk, meat and wool really don’t come from Walmart. Rural Utah in general, and agriculture in particular, still play a vital role in Utah’s economy. With more than 16,000 farms and $2 billion in yearly economic output,
agriculture matters. And yet, not surprisingly, the average age of farm operators continues to rise (57.4 year of age in the last agriculture census) and the number of farms continues to decline. A society that does not value the production of food faces an uncertain future at best. And while the tangibles are easily argued, I also believe the intangibles of farming are equally important. As Thomas Jefferson once wrote to George Washington, “Agriculture is
our wisest pursuit, because it will, in the end, contribute most of real wealth, good morals and happiness.” Now, those of us who farm or ranch might question the “real wealth” portion of Jefferson’s statement. However, the good morals and happiness that come from hard work and a rural lifestyle are the real reason that D.C. attorney asked if I knew how to haul hay. Or, as my dad often says, “We kept the farm NOT to raise crops. We kept the farm to raise kids.”

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. STORAGE Store at 77° F (25° C) with excursions between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Protect from light. Made in Canada. Featuring the Influence of TH 71U 719T Mr Hereford 11X The $135,000 highlight from Topp Herefords who’s untimely death has made his genetics some of the most sought after in the breed. He has a great birth to weaning spread with consistent eye and udder pigment. His direct progeny are available at Cache Cattle!
Our Philosophy
WE FOCUS ON THE NECESSARY ECONOMIC TRAITS, BOTH MEASURABLE AND IMMEASURABLE; MODERATE BIRTHWEIGHTS AND FRAME SCORES WITHOUT SACRIFICING PERFORMANCE. THE HEREFORD BREED IS MOVING TOWARDS STRONGER MATERNAL LINES, WHICH MEANS PIGMENT, DOABILITY, AND DISPOSITION MUST ALL BE IN CHECK. WE ALSO KNOW THAT IMF WILL BE CRUCIAL TO DEMAND BUYER ATTENTION. AT CACHE CATTLE, WE STRIVE FOR THIS OPTIMAL FEMALE BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT BEHIND EVERY GREAT BULL IS A GREAT FEMALE . CC 52S 28R Priscilla 22U
