You’ll see a bundle of tropical fruit in this youngster along with a more austere herbal character for interest and then a squeeze of lime juice for a sharp finish. The wine is long and dry and a great foil for a plate of freshly-shucked salty oysters.

As fresh as a cooling summer breeze, this Marlborough savvy has buckets of lively citrus and grassy fruit and a long sustained dry palate with a crunching acid finish. Absolutely brilliant with a plate of crisp squid rings and a twist of salt and pepper.

A bright ruby red colour, this is a drink-soon red blend from Cowaramup Wines that has soft tannins, juicy red berries, plum and a waft of black olive and eucalypt, typical characteristics of Margaret River cabernet. Terrific value and excellent with a red-sauce pasta and chunky crusty bread.

What a difference a year makes! This is from a cool wet vintage and shows peppery savoury characters, a medium body and good length and not the normal strength and ripeness of a warm dry vintage. Terrific with a grilled T-bone and potato salad.

From the Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra, this savvy has been fermented in stainless steel and also in French oak barrels and delivers tropical fruit and a herbal lift, more than complex oak characters. The attractive fruit-driven palate has freshness and zesty acidity and is perfect with a plate of crunchy wild-caught prawn.

A great vintage in the south-east corner of SA ensures that all the necessary goodies are here. You’ll see dusty tannins, regional spearmint flavours and balanced acidity and then a winemaker’s dollop of spicy oak adds complexity to this medium-weighted package. A slow-cooked shoulder of lamb with this.

This Margaret River cabernet is a little like a long distance runner, long and lean, but with a firm resilience underneath. Expect some mint flavours, blackcurrant, subtle oak, sandy tannins and a dry acid finish. Great with a leg of roast lamb and some mint sauce.

Pirathon Shiraz 2011 is typical north-eastern Barossa, although it’s not as fleshy as the previous vintage. Good colour, it has aromas of plum, spice and wood smoke and it tastes of wild black fruits and dark chocolate and has a chewy texture, drying tannins and a cleansing finish. Serve with seared kangaroo back-strap.

There’s a crimson colour with a mauve edge here and an aroma of strong white pepper, spicy plum and floral notes. The palate of this shiraz, grenache and mataro blend shows red fruit and a herbal lift with subtle tannins and a cleansing acid finish. Lighter structure than normal, this is a drink-soon style from the Barossa. Try with grilled sausages.

Devil’s Lair 2011 Margaret River Chardonnay

single

One of the top tier Margaret River chardonnays and from a quality vintage in the region. This has everything you’d expect – stone fruit, citrus, a mealy texture, the smokiness of oak, good length and a drying chalky finish. It’s all good.
