to Reduce Your Ecological Impact
Energy
is primarily derived from non-renewable sources, emitting toxins and greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. Buying solar panels prevents global warming and has never been more affordable. At the very least purchase Green Power from your utility company where applicable.
1. Eat Lower on the Food Chain with more organic, local vegetable based meals from your nearest Farmer’s Market. 2. Use Water Wisely. Whether inside or outside your home, water should be treated as the incredibly precious resource it has become.
Waste
is accumulating and our landfills are filling up! In the U.S., the average resident disposes of 4.5 pounds of trash per day. There is no place called “away”. “Away” is a landfill. Reduce your resource consumption and use our landfills as a last-resort.
3. Maximize your Energy Effectiveness by using resource saving bulbs, appliances, insulation and electronics. 4. Green the Grid by getting your power from renewable energy sources, such as Solar, Wind, Geothermal, or by switching to Green Power from your local energy utility where it is offered.
Chemicals
accumulate and persist in our bodies and in the environment. An Environmental Working Group study found 287 toxic chemicals, including mercury and pesticides, in the blood of 10 newborns. Use the safest products available for your everyday hygiene.
5. Walk, Bike, Carpool, Car Share or take Mass Transit. The most environmental automobile is the one you never use. 6. Use Alternative Fuel sources such as Electric Vehicles, waste Vegetable Oil, or sustainably produced Biofuels when you do need a car. Ensure the vehicle you drive is running at peak efficiency, by keeping it well tuned and maintained.

The Community Sustainability Program facilitates the adoption of sustainable practices in the community and engages diverse stakeholders to meet the goals set forth in the your city’s Sustainable City Plan. This latest program offered by Sustainable Works, is run by an environmentally educated, active, inspiring, creative individual serving as Community Sustainability Liaison. Santa Monica was the first pioneering city to launch this program, now we look to expand this service to other interested cities.
Our program helps businesses: • integrate water and energy saving measures • reduce and recycle solid waste • eliminate toxic chemicals • minimize transportation impacts • make eco-purchasing choices We provide businesses with the tools they need to implement environmental actions and policies. For each company, we assess current practices, commend existing behavior, recommend new measures, and then implement the options they select. During Implementation we provide resources, pricing, and employee education, following up at the end of this phase to track and promote their success. Once the program is completed, Sustainable Works helps businesses receive recognition for their sustainable actions via awards programs and Green Business Certification (www.smgbc.org). If you are already a green business, please contact us to apply for Green Business Certification. We have refined the leading national Green Business Certification programs and have implemented and directed the Green Business Certification program in Santa Monica since 2006. What are the program requirements? • Business must commit to making sustainable change • Commercially-zoned (no home-based businesses) If you have questions or would like to sign up, please call us at 310.458.8716 x2.
