If your passion for Vancouver’s gourmet cuisine needs a little rejuvenation, then a trip to C Restaurant in Vancouver is in order. Since owner Harry Kambolis opened the restaurant’s doors in 1997 through to today, C Restaurant has been rated among the top fine-dining eateries in British Columbia. Consistently named Vancouver’s best seafood restaurant of the year, C also gains regular recognition from various publications and organizations as one of the best restaurants overall. With a waterside location on False Creek, C opens up to views of boats and people parading by on the seawall. And if patrons can tear their eyes away from the outside views, they will undoubtedly be impressed by the restaurant’s interior, which was designed by local designer Dominic Smith. Smith faced the challenge of working with a building that was industrial in layout. Rather than hide the quirky industrial features, he chose to exploit these elements with flair. As a result of his flawless attention to detail, the restaurant is open and airy with minimalist decor and dramatic touches. Its floor-to-ceiling windows extend two stories, providing patrons with a view of the constant stream of passersby and cyclists on the promenade, and the sea-kayakers and ferries beyond, in False Creek. When the weather is nice, patrons also flock to the restaurant’s outside deck, which boasts expansive views of both Granville Island and False Creek. C’s Mezzanine Level offers a private and cozy place to dine, overlooking the activity of the main floor. If one was interested in observing the magic spun in the kitchen, he or she could request the single table that looks down on the garde manger section of the kitchen. Just beyond, towards the back of the mezzanine, is the Wine Attic, which pays homage to the cellars of old Europe, wallpapered with 350 bottles of fine wines and illuminated by candles. C’s attraction lies partly in its ambience, although the real draw is the restaurant’s succulent and unique fare— crisp rainbow trout, wild salmon and expertly grilled roasted Sechelt sturgeon are a few popular entrees—and its impressive list of British Columbian wines, created by sommelier Tom Doughty. The restaurant’s extraordinary menu derives its power from its personal philosophy, which holds that the best-tasting ingredients are those that have been produced in the most environmentally responsible way. Through partnerships with the BC Salmon Marketing Council, the David Suzuki Foundation, and many others, C has developed a reputation as Vancouver’s residing ambassador for the quality of fish and seafood available on the coast, and a recognized leader in the marketplace.

is one peppered with
adversity, yet an amazing testimony of how one man overcame difficult circumstances, becoming an inspiration to many. Twenty years ago, a serious injury rendered during a professional rugby match left Roy with three broken vertebrae in his neck. Told he would never run again, Roy cursed God and retreated into his English apartment, shunning family members and friends. Amidst a deep, suicidal depression, he experienced the lowest point of his life. After 10 months of living in darkness, “One day I woke up and opened my drapes. It was the brightest light you’ve ever seen, beaming through my room,” he explains. Insistent upon overcoming his depression, Roy strapped on a backpack and flew to Jamaica– his childhood home.

To help update your look for this fall and winter, Joanne Yeh, a Vancouverbased makeup artist, reveals this season’s makeup trends: red lips with pale eyes; dark eyes with a pale mouth; strong brows; silky, luminescent skin; and matte skin. Makeup colors shift from summery, bright shades of turquoise, pink and green, to richer, warmer tones— perfect for reviving pale winter skin. This fall’s color palette includes brassy and gold tones, berry and plum hues, and shades of chocolate. Joanne shares several makeup application tips to help you achieve this season’s hottest looks. She recommends prepping your skin to prevent makeup from fading. “It is very important to have your skin well moisturized,” Joanne points out. “Using a primer will smooth out any imperfections in the skin, and helps to hold your foundation longer.” After washing and moisturizing, smooth on primer, then apply foundation with a brush for a more flawless application. Finish by setting with powder. For your cheeks, blush is important for Fall. “A little bit of blush can change the appearance of your skin tone, brightening your complexion,” Joanne explains. Stroke a blush brush across the color, tapping gently to remove excess powder. “You do not want to pick up too much color, since you can always add to it if needed,” she states. While smiling, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. Since skin tends to dry out during cooler weather, Joanne recommends using crème blushes to help hydrate your cheeks. To add a healthy-looking glow, wear a bronzing powder beneath your blush year-round, especially when winter zaps your skin of vitality. Lastly, apply a mineralized powder with a buffing brush for a naturally luminescent look. Joanne suggests aiming for “structureless eyes” by using less liquid eyeliner and more eye shadow (in shades of brass, penny copper, chocolate, plum, and violet). Prepping your eyelid with a base is also a helpful step. “By using a matte crème shadow first, and then applying your eye shadow, the colors will be more intense; and it will also help prevent creasing.” For a “strong brow,” and a more natural look, apply eye shadow to your eyebrows with an angled brush, rather than using an eyebrow pencil. “Adding color to your eyebrows brings out your eyes more and frames your face,” states Joanne. Make a statement with red lips this season! Whether bold and bright or dark and deep, red hues are in. Gloss is also hot right now, but not paired with red. “Use clear gloss with lighter colors such as penny coppers, or even matching copper gloss, but when dealing with darker colors such as red, go with the muted, matte look,” Joanne explains. Also, be sure to completely blend in your lip liner with your lip color, allowing no visible line. We hope these trends and tips prove useful as you aim to stay current with your look this Fall. Mr. Rick Penner is in the business of making this happen. He has possessed a life-long passion for building, a trait shared by, and perhaps passed down from, his father. President of Rodell Developments in South Surrey, Mr. Penner has brought life to many a dream through the construction of custom homes. Fortunate enough to gain hands-on experience early on, Mr. Penner spent summer breaks from Trinity Western University helping framing crews—eventually building his first custom home with his father’s guidance. His passion for construction, coupled with his propensity for hard work, led to the creation of his own business straight out of college 18 years ago. Mr. Penner continues to enjoy using his innate creativity and knowledge of current industry trends to build fantasy homes, including lottery grand prize homes, one dream at a time.
What values taught by your father do you incorporate into your work? My dad was born in the Ukraine. His family escaped to West Germany during World War II when he was only four years old. They (along with thousands of other Mennonite people) were plunked in the jungles of Paraguay, and had to create their own colonies and fight for survival. So my dad grew up as a hard worker from a very young age. This was one of the biggest things my dad taught me and my brothers—hard work and the practical common sense of how to do things as well. With everything he taught us, he wasn’t going to let us get away with doing it half-heartedly. It was, “Do it, and do it with all your might, and do it as good as you can.” My dad taught me a good work ethic. I was never scared of hard work, that’s for sure. My dad is a man of integrity. He always had an impeccable reputation, whether it was with trades, the local building inspectors, or municipalities.
