I am a candidate architect, having recently completed my Masters of Architecture at Nelson Mandela University. My passion for architecture lies in the creative problem solving of designing spaces that respond to human emotion and experience while maintaining functionality. Having spent the first five years of my architectural life completing my Bachelor and Masters degrees, I am eager to apply myself and skills in the working field and to increase my knowledge of the profession while simultaneously striving to be a valuable and strongly dedicated employee.

This position allowed me to gain invaluable work experience in an architectural office environment, showing what it takes to be a working architect. It has been a critical tool in bridging the divide between the educational and professional realms.

Traced Memory
The design of Community Resource and Archival Facilities in South End, Port Elizabeth 2017
8
This Treatise project was formed around an interest in the history and memory of South End, a suburb in Port Elizabeth drastically affected by urban changes implemented by Apartheid government in the 1970s. The site explored for this project contains some of the few original South End artefacts that still remain at present and these, together with the invisible traces of what no longer exists of the old suburb informed the strategy that was implemented for the design and management of the site. The project therefore is composed of a collection of layers, namely ‘Traces’, ‘Movement’ and ‘Point Grid’, which have been overlayed on one another to create a space that revisits South End’s historical identity.

Mohair Hub in Jansenville 2016
18
The idea for this project was formed around the topic of ecology and sustainability in the architectural realm. Mohair, a natural wool-like fibre, has proven to possess qualities of a sustainable nature both environmentally (it is environmentally superior to artificial clothing fibres) and socio-economically. South Africa is the world’s largest producer and supplier of mohair and the small town of Jansenville is a main contributor to this supply. This hub aims to uplift the mohair community of Jansenville through the practice of sustainable and environmentally friendly mohair processing and its architecture aims to reflect this ecological sensitivity through sustainable design methods.

Skills Development centre in South End, Port Elizabeth 2016
24
This project was formed around the topic of heritage in architecture. Very little remains of preapartheid South End and what has survived the demolitions of the 1970s is in poor condition. This includes the neglected houses of Girdlestone Street. The proposed intervention for these houses is a skills development centre that pays homage to the historical South End community identity that includes artisanal skills as a way of life. The historical nature of the houses was strongly considered in the design and the intervention was approached with sensitivity in order to preserve the houses heritage. Other artefacts of historical importance found on site, such as the old fig tree, were also considered in the approach

Astronomical Retreat at Crossways 2015
28
The brief: “the research centre and retreat is to be sited at the “new rural town” of Crossways, the initiative of Dr Chris Mulder. The project is ti include a small observatory which will be the new home of the existing Port Elizabeth Amateur Astronomical Society’s 200mm refractor telescope. It can be noted that this project has to some extent been inspired by the Global Jet Watch Project initiated by the Oxford University’s AstroPhysics department, which deploys a round-the-world network of telescopes in boarding schools, where pupils will take observations to further the university’s research.”

Interpretation Centre at Karoo National Park, Beaufort-West 2014
32
This project dwells in the realm of Norberg-Schulz’s phenomenology and three landscape types: Cosmic, Romantic & Classical. The Karoo National Park, a landscape of a highly cosmic nature, is home to a collection of fossils that are to be housed in the centre. “Having extensively explored issues of program and materials in architecture, this project aims to expand these issues with a deep rooted concern for context. As an architectural program, an interpretation centre is particularly ground in the character and experience of the surrounding environment.”

Concrete Sculptor’s studio at the baakens valley, Port Elizabeth 2014
38
This project deals with tectonics and materiality in architecture. The task was to design a workspace, studio and residence for a sculptor of a specific material, in this case concrete. The qualities and characteristics of the material were explored and exploited in order to design a building that captured its essence. The aim was to highlight the essentials of concrete sculpting through the building and the relationship between concrete and ephemerality, usually two opposites, was explored.

Champagne bar on the seine in paris, France 2014
42
The brief for this project was extracted from the [AC-CA] competition brief. The site is along the walkway that runs next to the river Seine, with the Pont des Arts bridge above it to the west. The champagne bar was required to sit comfortably and harmoniously in the site and a consideration for public movement through the site and across the building was a main driving factor for the final design.

The owner of The Bioscope, a small, independent cinema (based in the Maboneng Precinct), has approached the precinct management, with a request to expand The Bioscope’s offering to include an open air style experience. The Maboneng Precinct has agreed and will allow them space within this new zone. Requirements: • An open air cinema for a maximum of 80 patrons • Retail space • Ablutions • Food and beverage area(s) Considerations: • Light pollution • Noise pollution • Air pollution • Space constraints • Traffic • This is an inner city location • The full volume of the underside of the bridge
