Chinese Food

Chinese cuisine is considered one of the

most popular food in the world, because of its variety and diversity. There are many different types of cuisine, and they all have different tastes and textures. There are up to five different types of chinese food, but we will only explore three of them. They are Northern, Western, and Central Chinese food. Northern Chinese food is considered to be salty, simple, less vegetables with wheat as the staple food. Beijing cuisine is influenced by a variety of Chinese cooking styles, mostly because of it being the capital of China, but also because it is nearby Shandong and Inner Mongolia. It is famous for its imperial court cuisine, which originated from the imperial kitchens, where food was cooked for royalty and officials. Inner Mongolia cuisine comes from the traditions of ethnic Mongols, and uses dairy products, red meat, mutton, beef, venison, etc. Typical dishes include roasted whole sheep, roast leg of lamb, and ‘hand-grabbed mutton. Shandong cuisine features many seafood ingredients and a variety of cooking techniques. It is known for its fresh, salty, crisp, and tender flavors. A famous Northern cuisine would be peking roast duck.

Eastern Chinese food is known to be sweet and light with a lot of fish and seafood dishes. Cantonese Cuisine focuses less on spices, but more on freshness and natural flavor of ingredients. Most of its dishes use sweet sauces. It is famous for its dim sum, bite-sized portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Fujian cuisine is famous for its abundant ingredients from the sea and mountains. Fujian dishes are slightly sweet and sour, and less salty. Common cooking techniques include braising, stewing, steaming and boiling. Zhejiang cuisine is famous for freshness, softness, and smoothness, with a mellow fragrance. Western Chinese cuisine is popular for Muslim food and Tibetan food. Xinjiang Cuisine is inhabited by many ethnic groups, and about half of the population belongs to the Uyghur minority, so Xinjiang Cuisine mostly refers to Uyghur cuisine. The food is predominantly halal food due to most Xinjiang people being Muslims. Tibetan cuisine is a blend of flavors of Nepalese, Indian, and Sichuan cuisines due to Tibet's position neighboring India, Nepal and Sichuan Province. It also has its own original dishes, influenced by its harsh climate where they farm yaks, e.g. yak fat tea. The types of Chinese cuisine are northern, western, and central Chinese food. They all have unique ways of cooking food, customs, and traditions. China is a very diverse place food wise, so be sure to understand all types after reading this magazine! (My favorite is eastern.)

Indian Food Indian food is known for both its taste and the style of cooking. In fact, many people automatically think of how spicy the dishes are. Both South and North Indian food are delicious and healthy, and are shared between the country. However, there are a few differences between the food in both regions.

An example of a South Indian dish is dosa. Dosa is a vegetarian dish which can be eaten for breakfast and dinner. It is made from batter into a very thin pancake in the shape of a circle or oval. Another dish is idly. Idly is also made from batter, but is shaped like a cake. A third South Indian dish is thali. Thali is a meal with many small dishes on a banana leaf, and is kept on a round plate.

A North Indian dish is naan, which is a type of flatbread. This can be eaten with many side dishes, but chicken tikka masala, which is a creamy curry made of chicken, or paneer tikka masala, which is a vegetarian curry made of an ingredient that is similar to cottage cheese, are the most common. Samosa is made often, and is eaten as an appetizer. It is a pastry in the shape of a triangle, and is filled mostly with vegetables, but can have meat, as well.

Indian Food...

A dish that is eaten in both Southern and Northern India is biriyani. Biriyani is a rice that is seasoned with many spices. This can be both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and is eaten with many sides. Laddu is a popular sweet that is made in the shape of a ball. The main ingredients of laddus are flour, milk, and sugar. Another popular dessert is gulab jamun. This is also a ball-shaped dish and has milk as one of its main ingredients, but is very spongy and is soaked in a sugary syrup. 6

Food

Japanese Many Americans enjoy Japanese food. In fact, there are 3,946 restaurants in the U.S. that only sell sushi and Japanese food. Japanese food is popular not only because of the seasoning, but because the ability of using chopsticks is considered cool. Most Japanese foods are rice or miso soup based. Most side dishes contain seafood like fish and vegetables. The seafood can be served grilled or raw.

Sushi and noodles are the most popular examples of traditional Japanese food. Like many other Asian foods, sushi is rice based. Norimaki sushis, the most known type in America, consists of rice and seafood wrapped in dehydrated seaweed leaves. Nigiri consists of small rice balls with seafood on top. The seafood is usually picked up with chopsticks. WRONG! It is intended to be picked by hand. There are 5 famous types of noodles: ramen, yakisoba, udon, soba, and somen. Ramen is popular in the States while yakisoba, udon, soba, and somen are more popular in Japan. Ramen noodles actually have a Chinese origin. They are most commonly eaten in soups containing vegetables, meat, and seasoning. In Tokyo, it is eaten in light chicken broth. But remember, every region has its own style. 7

Yakisoba noodles on the other hand are never served in soup. In fact, yakisoba means ‘fried noodles.’ These noodles are typically grilled with a good variety of vegetables. Another key ingredient to yakisoba noodles is the yakisoba sauce. It is sweet and tangy. Unlike most other Japanese noodles, udon noodles are thick. They undergo a heavy kneading process where noodle-makers stomp on the dough. Udon noodles are simple and the most popular udon noodle is the kake udon. Kake udons are served hot in tsuyu broth, topped with green onions. Plain udon noodles absorb flavor so it is recommended to eat them with strong flavors. If eaten plain, they can be eaten cold. Soba noodles can be described as the secret to the Japanese diet.

Some soba noodles are 100% buckwheat although some contain wheat flour. Still. Soba noodles are a good choice for a gluten-free diet in Japan. With many different choices as toppings soba noodles are served in tsuyu broth even though they are popular as a cold dish served with dipping sauce. Toshikoshi soba is eaten hot in New Year and symbolizes hopes of long lives. Somen noodles are thinner than most of the other noodles. In fact, that is their significance. Somen noodles are eaten cold, also creating a great way to cool down in a Japanese summer. They can be served plain with ice ot topped with vegetables. But there is always tsuyu dipping sauce with somen noodles. Nyumen noodles are somen noodles served in hot vegetables and meat. Almost all noodles are topped with spring onions, eggs, dried seaweed, Shichimi Togarashi, and tsuyu. Japanese food is one of the most popular type of cuisine in the world. It is most admired for chop-sticks. Sushis and noodles are only commonly known examples of it.
