Prince By: Bryson Austin

The Purple One Prince

was born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7, 1958. He was born to John Nelson, whose stage name was Prince Rogers, and Mattie Shaw who were jazz singers that sang with the Prince Rogers Band.He became interested in music at a very young age, he was playing the piano at seven and even wrote his first song. He taught himself how to play many instruments including the guitar, piano, and drums and excelled and them in his lifetime. His parents divorced when he was ten which lead to him and his sister, Tyka, being split between their parents. He eventually ran away skipping from one friend’s home to the next then he moved in with André Anderson ( later known as André Cymone) where he formed the band Grand Central with Anderson and Morris Day. In 1978 he signed with Warner Brothers, that year he released his debut album, For You. His first five albums were purely created by him written, played, engineered, produced, etc, including the self named, Prince, album and Dirty Mind. As the years progressed he became well known for deeply spiritual songs. He grabbed the attention of the global market with the release of the 1982 album, 1999, that had the top 20 title track and the top 10 hits “Delirious” and “Little Red Corvette.” In 1984 he released a movie and an album with the same name,” Purple Rain” alongside, “The Revolution.” One of the songs on the album set off the beginning of the explicit content sticker on CD’s. He also did other movies that weren’t so successful but wrote the music for the a Batman movie that made him even more of a commercially successful artist. 1990 marked a whole new era for him both great and tragic. He configured NPG, or the New Power Generation, with vocals by Rosie Gaines. In the fall of ‘92 his biggest controversy began when he signed a $100 million deal with Warner Brothers, which was considered the largest recording and publishing contract ever. It went well until a problem arose, Prince wanted to be releasing music faster while Warner wanted to take the time to publicise him. After much fighting Prince decided to change his name to an unpronounceable symbol, known as the love symbol which he marketed greatly, allowing him to record under a different alias.

Through all the mess though, on Valentine’s day of ‘96 he married backup singer and dancer Mayte Garcia and he wrote hit songs about her and their relationship. After two unsuccessful pregnancies, one baby dieing a week after birth from Pfeiffer Syndrome and a miscarriage, the couple divorced in 2000. In 2000 he broke out of the contract and adopted just his first name back. In recent years he married Manuela Testolini in 2001, they divorced 5 years late. He went on his highly successful Musicology tour in 2004. In 2006 he wrote a song for the movie Happy Feet and won a golden globe for best original song. In 2007 he performed at the Super Bowl playing in the rain and shredding his famed, “ Love Symbol Axe”, while a tarp displayed his silhouette. 20ten was his year of accolades, he was named the greatest super bowl performer ever by Billboard.com, was featured as one of the most influential people on earth by Time Magazine, earned a lifetime achievement award from BET and finally was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Sadly on April 21, 2016 he was found dead in the lift to his penthouse at his Paisley Park compound at the age of 57. A week earlier his plane made an emergency landing after he had a Percocet overdose which was covered up. The autopsy showed that he died of an accidental self-administered Fentanyl overdose that he took for pain after 30 years of performing in heels. He was a legend and he will be missed by 100’s of millions of fans.
