Welcome Letter From the Board of Directors It is my pleasure to serve as the 2019 Coarsegold Chamber of Commerce President. I am thankful to all the Board members who dedicate and volunteer their time and hard work to support local business in our community. The mission statement of the Chamber is: “to promote the general welfare and prosperity of the business community.” When I was asked to serve this year my thoughts went something like this: Can I do this job? If I lead, will others follow? Can I do some good for the community? And my answers are yes, yes and hopefully. What is needed in our small community and what will help local business? As a former business owner I really wanted people to shop locally, I wanted to be able to “get my word out” in a cost effective way and to offer a good product and be a good representative of that product, which was insurance. In this current role as President of the Chamber, I know that we can get the word out. Last month, our Facebook page, containing ads and public service messages had over 10,000 views. We have a monthly newsletter where Members can advertise. The Chamber produces a bi-annual Directory which is a relatively inexpensive but quality advertising and reaches over 15,000 readers. The Chamber represents Coarsegold at the Tulare Ag show. Thousands of people attend that show and our booth draws many. The sole purpose of the booth is to PROMOTE COARSEGOLD BUSINESS. When I was a business owner, I wanted people to move to Coarsegold and stay. The Peddler’s Fair, the Tarantula Festival, the Chukchansi Pow Wow, the annual Veteran’s Car Show and the Chukchansi Casino ARE ALL reasons to come to Coarsegold. The reasons to stay in Coarsegold are the small town feel, the gorgeous scenery and wildlife, and the welcoming people. We live here because we love it. This is our home. It’s the feeling I got when I first arrived here in 1997 - that THIS is a special place. Deniece Busse It is my goal to serve the community in the best possible way. 2019 President

Coarsegold Legends The Bates Family The year was 1976—the year Steven Bates, Sr., began working for John Summers and Mountain Aire Heating & Air Conditioning. That summer job (and Steve had many) was the one that would ultimately turn into a family-run legacy in Coarsegold. But that’s not all there is to the story! Born in 1958 in Fresno, Steve’s family (Steve Sr.’s parents and siblings) moved from Fresno to Oakhurst when Steve Sr., was 6-years-old. His dad taught at Oakhurst Elementary School and his mom worked for Dr. Bates. Four years later, they moved to Coarsegold. Speaking of summer jobs, Steve also hauled hay for the feed store and (in his spare time) worked with his mom, Virginia Alberta, who owned a concrete-statue business. Steve graduated from Yosemite High School in 1977 and continued to work for Mountain Aire. Two years later, Steve married Christine. They had known each other as teenagers—and Steve continued to work for Mountain Aire. (Do you see a pattern developing here?!) Less than a year later, Steve and Christine purchased
Mountain Aire from John Summers. From that point on, in January of 1980, Mountain Aire has been owned and operated by the Bates family. And in March of that year, the Bates family began to grow as they welcomed their daughter, Jaycee. At that time, Steve and Christine had one helper working for the company. In 1985, Steve purchased the office and yard of his mom’s concrete business and moved Mountain Aire there. Steve was out in the field and Christine was in the office. The next year, in 1986, Jaycee got a baby brother named Steve, Jr., and their family was complete. By that time Steve had about 8 people working for him. In 1995, Mountain Aire became incorporated and had about fifteen employees. Jaycee graduated from Yosemite High School in 1998–21 years after her dad graduated—and began working in the office with her mom. But working wasn’t the only thing in Jaycee’s life! While working at Mountain Aire, Jaycee met fellow employee, Matt David. Romance filled

the “Aire,” and Matt and Jaycee were married in October of 2001. The next year, their daughter, Grace, was born—making Steve, Sr., and Christine grandparents! They welcomed their second child, Shayla, in 2004. Meantime… the year 2004 was a busy one, as Steven, Jr., graduated from Yosemite High School and began working for Mountain Aire full-time in the field. And the family business continued to grow. In 2005, Jaycee and her husband, Matt, purchased the Seamless Gutter portion of Mountain Aire which they still currently operate together in Coarsegold. In 2015, their daughter, Tessa, was born. The family continued to grow when Steve, Jr., married in 2014. He and Amanda met in 2008 and in October 2015, they welcomed their daughter, Harper. Amanda began working in the office at Mountain Aire in 2016. Steven, Jr., mainly worked in the field but began working more in the office to help prepare for when he would take over for his dad. Mountain Aire has always truly been a family business with just about every member of the family working there at one point or another. All of the children in the family grew up running around the office while greeting many of the customers walking through the door. On October 1st, 2017 Steve, Jr., and Amanda purchased Mountain Aire from Steve, Sr., and Christine and took over the day-to-day operations of the company. Steve and Christine
had grown a remarkable business while raising a family and serving thousands of our Mountain neighbors. It was always a dream to keep the business in the Bates family and they

couldn’t be prouder to have their only son running it. Steve, Sr., still currently works at Mountain Aire with hopes of full retirement in his near future. Steve, Sr., and Christine had a very successful 38 years in business. Steven, Jr., and Amanda hope to continue on with that legacy. Mountain Aire currently has twenty-two full-
time employees on staff, including thirteen installers, five service technicians, and four office staff. They proudly service Coarsegold and the surrounding mountain communities for all of your Heating and Air Conditioning needs and hope to continue to do so for many years to come. Chukchansi Pow Wow
Gourd Dance, honoring Native American veterans.
“Honoring our Past and Looking Forward to the Future” was the theme for the 2016 Chukchansi Pow Wow held at the Coarsegold Historic Village in downtown Coarsegold, CA. This event is usually held in October of each year. The term “pow wow” may have its roots

from the Algonquin language as a way to refer to a council meeting. A pow wow is a cultural celebration, a truly special family event growing out of the economic, social, and cultural experiences of many Native American tribes. In addition to being a celebration of Native American culture, pow wows have spiritual and religious significance. Pow wows provide opportunities for people to come together; to sing, dance, make friends, renew old friendships, and enjoy arts and crafts and delicious food like Indian Tacos. The most important reason for the pow wow is to celebrate and honor Native American heritage.

Nestled minutes from the majestic splendor of Yosemite National Park.
Coarsegold Remembering the Past What follows are excerpts from interviews with some of the local folks that have been in the area many years. These recollections give us a picture of the Coarsegold that used to be.
“Buck” Akers recalls: I first came to Coarsegold in about 1935 just to visit. It was very similar to what it is with the Coarsegold Market and the service station next door. [The Coarsegold Market has been in business continually since about 1850 in different locations and different buildings.] The well had been taken out of the middle of the road. [A well was put over a seep in the road in 1873 or so, but it was removed when the road was paved as Highway 41 in the 1930s.] The swimming pool [at the Coarsegold Inn on the northwest corner of of Hwy 41 and the Raymond Road] was emptied in about 1958. The pool was at the bottom of the steps.
Bread, and other uses. As a sidebar, when our shop and houses were built, there was no electricity down Highway 41 that far. I did homework by a white gas lamp. Still have that lamp in our living room—too dangerous to use, I suppose—but in 1946 no one thought anything about using white gas, candles, and kerosene lamps.
Memories of Charles Randy and Nancy Chandler: Immediately after I came up here I got involved in the Coarsegold Rodeo. The rodeo grounds were up behind the Golden Nugget Cafe [now Alfonsos Mexican Restaurant] in the canyon known as McAllister Road. They had 19 acres there for a rodeo grounds; it was all built by local people volunteering their help: Murray Ward was rodeo announcer here for years, Bud Shannon, Johnny Jones, the Conway
Some notes from Evelyn Rudicel Armstrong: Right after World War II, my dad, Uncle John, and Grandpa built the H and R Garage on Highway 41 about a mile and a half south of Coarsegold. The H and R was a Mobil Gas Station for years, then Rainbow

brothers, Al and Dean Conway and their father, Al Conway, Richard Muller, Pogie Muiller, and another brother. I wasn’t too involved right off the first year or two because my job was to mow the rodeo grounds and get it ready for the spectators’ section.
Rusty Newby’s Coarsegold, 1929: Coarse Gold was such a unique and pretty place in those days. As I first came into it from the south, the little white schoolhouse on the left always caught my eye. Then the beautiful hotel a little farther along with its shady lawn and huge golf course that went up the sloping valley almost to the old Texas Flat Mine was something else. The big store that sat across the road next to Coarse Gold Creek with its porch clear across the front and a big dance hall above was the meeting place for the whole county in those days. Next to the store on the north was Doc Krohn’s Standard Oil service station and garage, and in the back was an old barn where Doc had all of his machine tools and other things. Across the road, on the west, was Doc Krohn’s house and on the side of it, Doc’s wife’s library. Just up the road a little ways was the gold Burgette Store with the house and barn next to it. The centerpiece of the town was the well and hand pump that sat in the center of the wide street, there to water stock, and most everyone stopped there to either water their horses or fill the radiator of their car. It was customary to pump the big handle of the pump and fill the trough if you used the water, and all the kids enjoyed that. You could also go into the store and get an ice cream cone from the soda fountain with the big granite slab counter.

Education A Short History of Schools in Coarsegold In the book As We Were Told, Vol. II, the Fritz Konklin interview (1993) told of wife Elinor and Fritz’s experiences with the schools in the Coarsegold area. Elinor had served on the first Coarsegold School Board in the 1950’s. The Coarsegold School at that time was at the corner of Hwy 41 and Road 415 in what is now a grassy area. It was the only school, and it burned down in 1956. Later there was Polk School (at Roads 400 and 415), Hawkins School (in the area of “Pneumonia Gulch,” south of Mattie Fhy Road) and Picayune School (at the corner of Quartz Mountain Road and Road 417). The renovated Picayune School is now on the Coarsegold Historic Museum property and is used as a meeting room. In 1959 there were only two teachers. The school system budget was $24,000, “...and that was for everything. Both of our teachers had [built up] a lot of sick leave. We didn’t have enough money left over to hire a substitute
teacher. Then we were short one student [to meet our quota].” A teacher’s son went to school in Madera; she transferred him to Coarsegold so they could keep two teachers. The property for the new Coarsegold School on Road 415 about a mile from from Hwy 41, was purchased from Bill Chrismer and used to be part of the old Dick Berry Ranch. Coarsegold has never had a high school. Students were bussed to Raymond High School, and when that closed, to Sierra High School near Auberry. Raymond High School had closed when the quarry had shut down and people left the area to find work elsewhere. Students traveling to Sierra High School often spent four hours on the bus—left home in the dark and got home in the dark! Students today attend high school at Yosemite High School in Oakhurst, which opened in 1976, or Minarets High School in O’Neals, which opened in 2008.
