“The front is where we have to be the best at,” Salmons said. “I feel pretty good about the guys we have coming back.” The linebacker unit lost Nick Boone, but returns Josh Cox, a 6foot-3, 200-pound inside linebacker, and several outside linebackers in Brady Elkins, Bobby Mitchell, Justin Leggett and Kameron Stapleton. The secondary will be led by seniors Jeff Racer and Matt West, among others. Salmons praised kicker Sawyer Adkins, who has also shown lots of growth. “We had Meet the Knights and he was kicking 40 to 45 yard field goals, which is exciting for us,” Salmons said. Salmons didn’t offer any predictions, but said he’s excited with the talent he sees before him. “Are they the best right now? Absolutely not, but they have the potential to be really, really good,” he said.

WILLOW WOOD, Ohio — Attention Symmes Valley opponents. The offensive line you’ll see on a weekly basis this fall will be unlike those who toiled in the trenches in previous years in one regard. “We’ve got some experience,” Vikings coach Rusty Webb said. “I feel like we’re more athletic up front than we’ve been in a while. We had a good winter. The size is there.” That means the option attack Symmes Valley runs out of the wishbone formation should be even more difficult for opponents to contain. “It’s the one thing we do,” Webb said of a ground game that piles up yards and controls the clock at the same time. “If teams come up (load the box), it’s in there.”

That means if a pass is there, the Vikings will take it. Kyle Vallance moved from the backfield to tight end to take advantage of his strength. Others at that position are Josh Hupp, Lane Wilson, Cameron Meadows and Curtis Lybrand. Tackles are veteran Jacob Easthom, Ben Ferguson, Hunter Nelson and Dakota Watson (who can play guard). Guards are Tyler Celeski and Tyler Dement. Jonah Graybeal, Travis Gates and Phillip Combs are the centers.

We’ve Webb got some youth back there, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t played.” On defense, the Vikings will feature a 4-4 look for the 18th straight year. Tackles are Easthom, Ferguson,

Celeski, Watson and Nelson. Ends are Holbrook, Rowe, Meadows, Lybrand and Gates. Inside linebackers include Phillip Combs, Dement, Graybeal and Sheppard. “They’ll all see time,” Webb said. Outside linebackers are Mays, Craft, Hayes and Levi Cade. In the secondary are Webb, Hupp, Vallance, Thacker and Wilson. Webb and Wilson will handle punts. “They’ve played in big games before,” Dingess said. “Now, it’s just equating that to the offensive side.” The new stable of running backs includes tailbacks Colby Webb and Tyler Robertson, along with fullbacks Dylan Lageman and Chase Lucas. Jakob Frye will also see time. The ‘X’ receiver spot will see Brandon Ash and Trevor Maynard on the outside in passing situations. Quarterback Tyler Brown is also returning and will take on more of a leadership role after being able to learn the system while being aided by the seniors last season. “A lot of times, the quarterback has to be the leader on the offensive side of the ball and we didn’t ask him to do that last year,” Dingess said. “He just had to manage the game. starting lineup while the guards will be Ricky Willis and Skyler Ratcliff. Kody Riggs will also be a crucial cog, backing up both tackle positions and the right guard spot. The tight ends will be Thomas Napier and Chandler Miilum. “They’ve gotten a little taller and they’ve shed a little weight, so the offensive front is moving around a little bit better out there,” Dingess said. “We’ve still got big kids, but they move pretty well. We might also get in some two-tight end sets and run one-back at times.” Defensively, the Timberwolves’ 3-4 scheme will incorporate Willis at rush end with Ratcliff backing him up while Stephen Jones and Hammer will split at the nose guard spot. Stacy will be the big tackle while Locklear will also see time. Replacing Wellman, the 2012 Huff Award winner as the state’s top defensive player, is crucial, but the Timberwolves have three of four back along the second level. Lageman moves from outside to the position vacated by Wellman while Chase Lucas is the other inside linebacker. On the outside, Webb and Frye will fill out the linebacking corps. Cam Lucas will also be called on to back up both spots. In the secondary, Robertson returns to free safety while Adam Page will line up at strong safety. The cornerbacks will be Brewer and Maynard Kyle O’Neal will assume the kicking duties.

“It’s not real glamorous,” Harmon said. “The success we’ve had around here — and not just the last couple years but years prior — it’s had everything to do with time and energy on the players’ parts. We’re fortunate around here that we’ve got kids who are willing to sacrifice mentally and physically to get theirselves prepared. When you are willing to do that, it usually means something to you.” Wayne is headlined by a slew of players who return with experience from last year. Headlining the bunch is Mason Hodge, a do-it-all, 6-foot-1, 235pound running back and linebacker, who creates matchup problems for a defense. And that’s just on offense. “The big thing about Mason is his flexibility,” Harmon said. “We could really put him on any position on the football field and not only could he physically do it, he could mentally do it. He understands the game and what needs to be done.” Quarterback Grant Ferguson and running back Nathan Spurlock both return after solid seasons. Ferguson threw for 18 touchdowns with only one interception and has shown that he can take the game into his hands when needed. “We talk about Mason a lot, but Grant is a special player,” Harmon said. “He’ll be a junior and as a 15year-old last year, he led a team to a 14-0 record, threw for a bunch of yards and I think he had 17 or 18 touchdown passes and one interception. Wayne’s success is built along the offensive line, and the team returns the interior of its offensive front with Curt Followay, Alex Elkins and Matt Queen returning. J.C. Maynard and Collin Kelley are moving into the fold after paying their dues while Ryan Baumgardner and Joe Mullins are also there to provide Harmon with several combinations. “They are going to have to toe the line, so to speak, when it comes to those tough games,” Harmon said. “You have to have guys who know what they are doing and play physical. We’ll have a pool of about seven or eight that we’ll be able to find our right combination. It may not be perfect at first, but we’ll try to get it to where at the end of the year, you are playing as good as you can.” Defensively, many of those same offensive linemen will be in the mix along the front of a Wayne defense, who returns after dominance in 2012. inside linebackers. Seniors Brody Lunsford and Taylor Maynard get a chance to make their impact at outside linebacker. Hodge is a player who could be on several award lists at the end of the year, and Harmon said he has put in his time to earn such nominations. “He knows his role as a leader on the team is bigger and with that comes a responsibility to work,” Harmon said. “He’s a talented player and a guy that can change a game. Very rarely can you find one player that can directly affect the outcome of the game, but he’s a guy.” Ferguson will also be critical in the secondary as a free safety with other guys stepping into roles. “The time and energy they have to put into it is enormous, but it’s something where you take kids that people don’t know their name and they may not end up getting their opportunity until they are a senior,” Harmon said. “We’ll have a lot of those guys who will likely step into those roles this year.”

HURRICANE — Hurricane High is out to build on what it started in 2012 under rookie head coach Jeremy Taylor. The Redskins posted a 6-4 record and made the West Virginia Class AAA playoffs. They have seven starters back on offense and defense from that team. Familiarity with Taylor and his systems had things running smoother when preseason camp began and he hopes that carries over into the fall. “I have a good staff and we’ve grown as a team,” Taylor said. “We’re way ahead of where we were at this point last year.” On offense, two Redskins to watch are quarterback Austin Hensley and all-purpose back Zach Pate. Both are seniors. Hensley, a three-year starter, has made great strides since his sophomore season. He threw for more than 2,200 yards and 21 touchdowns and made second team Class AAA all-state in 2012. The 2,200 yards are the most of any returning quarterback in Class AAA. “Don’t lose the game, try to win it,” Taylor said in assessing Hensley’s progress from year to year. Pate could line up at any number of places. In addition, he returns punts and kickoffs. He was special mention all-state. “You’ll have to account for him,” Taylor said. “He got overlooked a bit last year. That won’t happen this year. He can hurt you in a lot of ways.” The multi-dimensional performer racked up more than 1,300 total yards and scored 13 TDs, not counting special teams last season. Receivers for the Redskins are Brandon Ford, Zack Fitzsimmons and Jeremy Francis. Ford played as a freshman, then sat out 2012. “He missed it,” Taylor said. Jon Francis is the fullback and plays corner on defense. He’s one of the few starters who goes both ways. Two big names not back are receiver Koi Turner, who has moved to Columbus, and running back Steven Handley, who turned 19 years old and is ineligible to play. Hensley put up big numbers in 2012, but Taylor knows one-dimension football won’t work. “There’s got to be a mix,” Taylor said. “Even though you’ve got a quarterback, you can’t throw it 60 times a game. Teams in West Virginia, it’s not like the past when they couldn’t cover the pass. You’ve got to run the ball. That’s how you win.” On defense, Brian Hughes and Tanner McCallister are the ends and Mike McCracken and Alec Cummings are the down Taylor linemen. Jon Francis is one linebacker along with Dylan Kimble, Bradley Hodges and Caperton Humphrey. Jeremy Francis is a defensive back, making him another two-way performer. Matt Cooper, Dylan Tinsley and Jesse Barker are also in the secondary. “We’re going to bring it,” Taylor said in explaining an aggressive style on defense. “If our guys can block us, they

can block anybody.” Taylor had 61 players in camp compared to 45 a year ago. “Our depth is good,” he said. “Guys learn one spot, but they get enough work to know another.” Hurricane will have scrimmages against Parkersburg South and Woodrow Wilson (Mountain State Athletic Conference Grid). The Redskins open the season Aug. 30 at home against Huntington High. Facing Mountain State Athletic Conference foes week after week isn’t easy. “It’s a tough conference,” Taylor said. “Huntington, Capital, George Washington, Cabell Midland and Spring Valley. “We play all five.” Taylor has a bit more bounce in his step now as he comes down from his office for practice compared to a year ago. “We were confused at times,” he said. “I’d come upstairs, close the door and not want to come out. It’s amazing how fast we picked things up. The kids like twoplatoon. Come Aug. 30, we’ve got to be able to run the ball. Even though we’re ahead now, you’ll never be where you want to be.”

Generals look to turn the corner in 2013 By BEN FIELDS

WINFIELD — In 2012, Craig Snyder had a singular goal in his first year as head coach of the Winfield Generals: change the image of the program. Snyder wanted to get his program removed from the list that other teams could check off as a sure win on their schedule. He wanted the Generals to make other teams work to earn a tick in the win column. In terms of wins and losses, Winfield was the same in 2012 as the previous season, finishing 4-6. As far as changing the culture of the program, the mission was partly accomplished. Winfield was tougher to beat, aside from a 63-0 loss to state Class AAA runner-up Cabell Midland and a 41-7 loss to Spring Valley on Senior Night. “Don’t forget to throw Hurricane in there. They manhandled us pretty good,” Snyder said with a dry chuckle.

“Last year, we didn’t want to be anyone’s easy out, and we still were for some teams. “The teams that were really tough up front beat us up. Some of that is just physical matchups, some of it is personality and some of it is still an image thing.” Still, it seems the culture surrounding the Generals program is coming about. Last year Snyder had about 50 players to work with. This year he has 74. Out of those, 27 are freshmen. “We’re still a bit bottom-heavy when it comes to experience,” he said. “But having 27 freshmen excites me a lot.

I’m hoping to eventually plateau with 80 to 90 kids.” Many younger players will be pressed into action in the 2013 season. Veteran quarterback Toby Show returns, along with a deep rotation of experienced wide receivers. The obvious hole is at running back, as leading rusher Seth Lewis graduated in the spring. Before departing, he made a statement for himself Snyder and the Winfield program when he broke off an 11-yard touchdown run for the South in the annual West Virginia North-South All-Star Classic. The expected choice to step into Lewis’ place was Colt Richardson. But Richardson, who was coming off a knee injury from 2012, has taken a bit longer to recover than expected, Snyder said. “As of right now, it’s not going to

Once he has that, he’ll be better than Seth. “We’re going to throw the ball a lot and we have a lot of options on offense, but you have to look at the offensive line. We have to be more consistent there.”

COAL GROVE, Ohio — Coal Grove’s trademark on offense is a punishing ground game. Coach Dave Lucas expects that trend to continue in 2013 even though the cast of carriers has undergone a makeover. In name only. “We have some speed. We’ve got kids who ran as much as the kids who left,” Lucas said. Quarterback Alex Bare, backs Greg Bender and Brandon Hogsten and receiver Bryan Steele moved on after helping the Hornets to a 6-4 record and spot in the Ohio Division V playoffs a year ago. The players who gave them a break are now ready for full-time work. Isaiah Gunther, Austin Ruggles, Jacob Clark, D.J. Miller (transfer from Symmes Valley) and Daniel Rutherford are the tailbacks. “They all can run,” Lucas said.

Nearly all the backs are underclassmen. “Rigsby’s got experience,” Lucas said, noting he took over for Bare many times a year ago when games got out of hand. “He’s athletic. He can throw and run.” Rigsby is 6-foot-1, Carey goes 62 and Lucas said they benefit from being on the tall side. Wingbacks are Sidney Tucker, Mason Nance and Sean Paulus. At

wide receiver are Mason Nance, Conor Markins, Paulus, Clark and Rutherford. Gunther can line up there along with Joe Akers. Tight ends include Akers, Markins, Isaac Fields and Greg Carter. Up front, centers are Jacob Pierce, Dakota Willis and Ray Brubaker. Austen Pleasants is one guard. Tackles are Ike Pennington, Ryan Stephens, Zack ShanLucas non, Brubaker and Brad Roach. “We’re a lot more versatile,” Lucas said, noting the offense can feature a tight look as well as spread the field. “We’ll still line up and go at people, but we have to use the field some. The kids like to throw and catch. I’m glad we’ve got options.” On defense, the Hornets will utilize a 5-3 look. Willis and David Abrams are middle guards. Tackles are Pleasants,

Logan Berry, Pennington, Stephens and Roach. Ends include Jeff Smith, Pierce, Tucker, James Baker and Roach. Linebackers are Ruggles, Murphy, Tucker, Clark, Rutherford, Carter and Henry. The secondary has Gunther, Markins, Paulus, Miller, Clark, Ranze Large and Carey. “We’ve got kids who’ve played, depth and balance, size and speed,” Lucas said. Markins is the punter. The Hornets are unsettled on a placekicker. In preseason, Coal Grove had a scrimmage against Vinton County and met South Point in the finale in the Ohio Valley Conference preview at home. The Hornets had their jamboree game at home against Ironton. “You see what kids will perform and work to get better,” Lucas said.

WHEELERSBURG, Ohio — A series of close shaves saw Wheelersburg finish 8-3 in 2012, losing in the first round of the Division V playoffs to Baltimore Liberty Union, 24-13. The Pirates came close to knocking off Ironton in the traditional season opener between the two schools, falling 32-27. Wheelersburg moved the ball at a good clip as quarterback Eddie Miller commanded the Pirates’ spread, zoneread option offense, finishing as the team’s passing and rushing leader. Miller returns as a senior for the 2013 season, and will lead his team into Tanks Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30 for a final shot at Ironton.

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — The Blue Devils will look to build on momentum from last season. After finishing 6-4 and missing the playoffs in 2011, Gallipolis put a

strong season together in 2012, finishing 9-3 after getting bounced in the second round of the Division III playoffs by Dayton Thurgood Marshall. Starting quarterback Wade Jarrell returns as a senior to direct the Blue Devils. Last season Jarrell emerged as a dual threat, racking up touchdowns with his arm and his legs. In a 48-21 win over Portsmouth, he ran for 191 yards and three scores.

This year the goal for Winfield has shifted from image to results. “The goal is a winning record and to make the playoffs,” Snyder said. “And we know, with our schedule, if we have a winning record, we’re going to make the playoffs. We want to take that next step.” The Generals do have a brutal schedule in 2013, and will be tested right away. Winfield opens with back to back home games against Woodrow Wilson and Cabell Midland. After a Sept. 13 matchup with Ripley, the Generals get a bye week before traveling to Point Pleasant. In October, Winfield plays at Spring Valley, at South Charleston and at Hurricane. “You look at our schedule, and you find the weak part for me,” Snyder said. “You find the game that’s a break.” Winfield has five state championships in program history, though the most recent came in 1987 when the Generals were still a Class AA team.

FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio — The Bobcats will look to improve in 2013 after two consecutive 3-10 seasons. Always at a disadvantage in sheer numbers, Green dressed 19 players in 2012, six of whom were seniors. The Bobcats got off to a promising start last season with blowout wins over Manchester and Millersport, the same two teams Green will begin the 2013 season facing, but Dan McDavid’s squad wasn’t able to manufacture much after that. Green will face a tough Sciotoville Community squad twice in the coming season.

After putting together a 6-5 season in 2005, followed by an 8-3 campaign in 2006, South Gallia suffered four straight losing seasons, before turning things around in 2011, when the team finished 7-4. But 2012 saw a sharp dip as the Rebels managed only two wins. The Rebels will have a test right off the bat in 2013, as they open Aug. 30 at Sciotoville Community. South Gallia will also host West Virginia 2012 Class A state champion Wahama on Oct. 18.

River Valley

BIDWELL, Ohio — The Raiders are coming off back to back 2-8 seasons as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. But, when you figure in that River Valley finished 1-9 five times in the six seasons preceding 2011, the recent results are at least something of an improvement. River Valley seems set up to take plenty of lumps in 2013, with a schedule that features OVC stalwarts Coal Grove, Chesapeake and Fairland, along with matchups against Adena and at Meigs.

Once again, Coal Grove has a difficult non-league schedule. The Hornets open at home against Meigs (coached by former Marshall University and NFL long snapper Mike Bartrum) and also meet Lucasville Valley and Raceland at home. They visit Wheelersburg and Waverly. “We’re back to where we were when I left,” Lucas said. “If you’re going to be competitive and make the playoffs, you’ve got to play teams like that.” In the OVC, Coal Grove is favored to repeat and that’s OK with Lucas. Fairland has a new coach in Cullen Homolka and Chesapeake has a new stadium with artificial turf. “Based on the number of kids back,” Lucas said in explaining why the Hornets are the OVC favorite. “I’ve coached long enough, though, to know anything can happen. It’s one week at a time.”

ASHLAND — The Ashland Tomcats lost their Hart, but they’re hoping Love will be the answer. Veteran head football coach Leon Hart retired after the end of the 2012 season. His replacement is Tony Love, who has been on the Tomcats sideline as an assistant for two decades under four different coaches, most recently as Hart’s defensive coordinator. “It feels great,” Love said of taking the top job. “It’s stressful, it’s busy, but I feel like I’m part of a special fraternity. When you look at the tradition and history of the coaches who have come through here, to be part of that group, it’s special.” The Tomcats have 11 state titles in the program’s storied history. Last season Ashland finished 9-3, falling in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, 52-13, to eventual state champion Highlands. The team has perhaps one of the best tailbacks in the region, if not the state, returning in sophomore Quentin Baker. Hart had intended to use Baker as a change-of-pace back last season, but injuries forced the freshman into a starting role, and he responded. Baker racked up 932 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns in nine games for Ashland in 2012 before suffering a foot injury early in a contest with perennial Class AAA power Belfry, a game the Tomcats went on to win. The blow came a week after a 206-yard, three-touchdown performance in a 56-16 dusting of rival Boyd County. Baker did not play in the final two games of the season, including a 22-21 overtime loss to conference foe Johnson Central. The tailback was also not on the field for the team’s two playoff games. Love said Baker is back in better condition for the 2013 campaign. “He’s improved a lot in the weight room; that was something that I don’t think he really hit that hard before, and that’s just because he was young,” Love said. “You don’t expect a freshman to do what he did. He set the bar pretty high. I think the sky is the limit for him, but we have to be good on the offensive line in front of him. You’re only as good as the guys around you.” The Tomcats were expecting to have senior quarterback Aaron Elam under center, but Elam left the team to focus

So the responsibility under center falls to junior Hunter Prince. “He’s a guy that’s worked extremely hard in the off season,” Love said. “He had put us in the position that, if (Elam) had been back, I think we’d have a good competition going on for the starting spot.” On defense, the Tomcats will look to replace a literally huge presence in Cade O’Bryan, who was selected to the all-state team as a senior in 2012. O’Bryan not only racked up sacks and tackles, but scored three touchdowns on fumble recoveries last season. “I don’t think you can just replace that kind of output,” Love said. “All you can do is get the next guys in line ready to do things better than they have before. Playmakers are just that. It’s not something you can teach, it’s something that just happens. All we can do is teach the kids how to play.” Ashland’s schedule includes a budding rivalry with West Virginia powerhouse George Washington — the Tomcats upset the Patriots 21-14 in Charleston last year — the annual tilt with Ohio power Ironton, and scraps with local rivals Russell and Raceland. The Tomcats dropped Belfry from the schedule and picked up Newport Central Catholic. “The teams we play, I think that kind of lends itself to our success,” Love said. “We play good teams, and you find out what you’re made of, that’s for sure.”

ASHLAND — The Class A Fairview Eagles have only lost two games over the past two seasons. Unfortunately, both of those losses have ended their season. The Eagles finished 12-1 in 2011, falling in the third round of the playoffs to Pikeville, and last year went 14-1 in a season that saw Fairview make its way to the state semifinals and state final for the first time in program history. Fairview lost the state title match with

Mayfield, 55-8. But after two seasons of dominating the competition, expectations are high again in the tight-knight Fairview fan base. “I’d rather have high expectations than be in the opposite situation where we’re coming off of losing seasons,” said fifthyear head coach Nate McPeek, a former Marshall University lineman. “We’ve got a lot of momentum, and that can be hard to find. While you’ve got it, you’ve got to use it.” McPeek said the school made more money from ticket sales for the team’s intra-squad scrimmage this year than it did in his first home game as head coach. “People are excited, and I’m excited,” McPeek said. “We’ve got 69 football players. That’s the most in program history, and unheard of for a Class A school. I think my first year we dressed 32.” Fairview certainly has the bodies, but has some big holes to fill in terms of talent, and the Eagles might not have their way with the competition like the team did in 2012. Last season, the backfield combo of Elijah King, Chris Brewer and Devon Turner produced 4,731 rushing yards and 61 touchdowns running the Wing-T offense. All three are gone, having graduated in the spring. McPeek is looking to backs Tanner Dolen, Isaiah King and Kyle Sesher, among others, to pick up the slack from the wings. Dolen and Sesher both showed flashes of promise when they got in late in games or gave one of the starters a breather last season. At fullback, stepping into Brewer’s shoes will be juniors Armonde Yetts and Caleb McKnight. “We’ve got five wingbacks right now who are looking pretty good,” McPeek said. “Armonde has a bit more speed at fullback, while Caleb is more of a traditional, straight-ahead runner at that position. “I think we have guys to fill these roles. We might have some growing pains, but I think we’ll be OK in time as long as we’re healthy.” Fairview does have its starting quarterback returning in Alex Roy. Roy started for the Eagles last year as a freshman. McPeek said the 2013 season will be a good exercise in “fighting complacency.” “If you’ve been winning, you don’t just keep winning by showing up,” McPeek said. “Winning is hard. It’s not easy to get back to the state championship. It doesn’t work that way. I think we’re going to be

challenged week in and week out this year, and hopefully that will set us up for a nice playoff run.”

Boyd County

CANNONSBURG, Ky. — Last year the Boyd County Lions introduced a new head coach in Ray Brooks, and Brooks had a vision for resurrecting the program with hard work in the weight room and a new, triple-option offense. After a 5-6 season, which saw Boyd County go out in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs in a 56-14 loss to Highlands, Brooks resigned, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family, and the Lions were back to square one. But Brooks’ exit may have been fortuitous for Boyd County. After a regime change in Morehead State University’s football program, longtime Eagles defensive coordinator John Gilliam was on the market. Gilliam was reportedly ready to accept the defensive coordinator position at Rowan County when the head coaching job at Boyd became available. A second, more experienced breath of fresh air in as many years might be what the program needs after suffering a 56-16 loss to rival Ashland and falling 35-6 to Russell in 2012. The Lions get both the Tomcats and Red Devils at home this year, as well as hosting local Class A rival Raceland. Boyd County will also look to avenge a 28-25 loss to Rowan County last season, as the Lions get the Vikings at home in 2013.

RUSSELL, Ky. — The Russell Red Devils were able to handle most of the teams they were supposed to handle in 2012. But the Devils didn’t beat anyone they weren’t supposed to beat. Coming into 2013, the historical Class AAA powerhouse is looking to break a string of mediocrity. Russell last won a state title in 2005, and returned to the state title game in 2006. In 2007, the Red Devils compiled an 11-2 record. Since then, Russell hasn’t been able to do any better than 7-5, the mark the team hit last year, and has finished 6-5 twice. The Devils were bounced from the first round of the AAA playoffs in 2012 by Garrard County, 12-7.

HAMLIN, W.Va. — For Lincoln County, the first-year transition out of the Mountain State Athletic Conference was not what the Panthers had envisioned. The Panthers suffered through an 0-10 season in 2012 when the team gave up a staggering 51 points per contest. Fast forward to 2013, and there is nowhere to go but up for the Panthers, who will fully make the transition to a much friendlier schedule than in previous years. First-year coach Derek Christian, a former West Virginia University player, takes the helm at Lincoln County after spending eight seasons coaching St. Albans from 2004-2011. Christian resigned following the 2011 season to pursue an administrative job, according to a Charleston Daily Mail story. His efforts landed him in Lincoln County where he became the school’s assistant principal.

Russell didn’t come close to hanging with rival Ashland, falling to the Tomcats 47-7 on the road. The Red Devils finished the regular season with a 25-14 loss to smaller neighbor Raceland. Coach Ivan McGlone, who has two state titles to his name, the first coming in 1979, will be back on the sideline, and Russell will be running its Wing-T offense as it has for more than three decades. It’s never a question of what’s coming with the Red Devils, it’s a question of whether the opponents can stop it. For the past five seasons, defenses have been answering the call in five to six games. The Red Devils will not face Raceland in 2013. Russell opens Aug. 30 at home against traditional rival Greenup County, and will face Ashland at home on Sept. 13.

A team that bigger brothers Ashland and Russell strive just to play with, and occasionally defeat on the rarest of occasions, is coming to see what kind of fight the Rams have in them on Nov. 1. Raceland finished 9-3 in 2012, bowing out in the second round of the Single A playoffs, 26-20 to Pikeville. The loss can be somewhat confusing on paper, since the Rams beat Pikeville 54-14 on Aug. 31 during the 2012 regular season. In that first match up, running backs Daylin Beach and Zack Litteral rushed for 156 and 155 yards, respectively. Beach found the end zone four times, and Litteral added on two touchdowns. Both had 18 carries In the playoff rematch, Beach ran for 125 yards and one score on 22 carries, while Litteral was bottled up for 65 yards on 13 carries. Both return for the Rams as seniors for the 2013 season. Raceland wasn’t able to win the local battle for Class A bragging rights, falling to Fairview, 40-27, on the road. This season the Rams will have the Eagles in their backyard. The Rams did put up a convincing 25-14 win over AAA rival Russell and

GREENUP, Ky. — If the Musketeers can just manage a single win, Greenup County will have its best record in three seasons. That’s right, the 4A school has gone 020 in the past two seasons. Greenup County was shut out twice in 2012, and suffered an absolute thrashing, 72-0, at the hands of Class A Fairview. The most points the Musketeers were able to put up was 29 in a loss to Letcher County that saw the victor hang up 62. In 2011, the Musketeers averaged 8.8 points per game, while their opponents averaged 44. Greenup County has been suffering from a lack of bodies, and injuries have taken their toll on a smaller roster over the past two seasons. The team has a listed roster of 57 players for the 2013 season, which is better than what head coach Chris Mullins has had to work with in his previous two years. Still, experience is lacking on a team with only eight seniors. Nothing gets easier for Greenup County in 2013. The Musketeers play virtually the same schedule they did in 2012, which includes match-ups with Russell, Race-

LOUISA, Ky. — The Bulldogs are hoping to turn a corner, though the Lawrence County program is still suffering from a depleted talent pool as school enrollment has dropped. Once a 4A powerhouse, the Bulldogs were dropped to Class AAA in 2011. In that first season in a new division, the team went 5-7, picking up a playoff win before being knocked out in the second round. The 2012 campaign was more of the same. Lawrence County finished 5-6, losing in the second round of the playoffs to Belfry, 48-6. Last season’s squad suffered somewhat from a void in leadership, with only six seniors. That number is up to nine for the 2013 season. The Bulldogs had some close calls last year that could have changed the course of the season, including a 50-49 loss to Perry County Central. By the same token, Lawrence County was able to snag some surprising wins, defeating Prestonsburg 42-41, and knocking off perennial power Sheldon Clark, 3933 on the road. The Bulldogs also picked up a 22-14 victory at Morgan County in the first round of the playoffs before running into the Belfry buzzsaw.

BUFFALO, W.Va. — The Buffalo Bison strung together a pair of decent 74 seasons in 2012 and 2011, but coach Mike Sawyer said he and his assistants are just trying to get a team ready to play in 2013. Longtime starting quarterback Levi Jordan, a member of the 2013 North-South All-Star squad, graduated in the spring, and the Bisons’ top returning running back, Laythen Good, injured his knee before fall camp and is out for the season. Sawyer said he’s got 29 players on the roster, 12 of which are freshmen. “We’re kind of in a rebuilding year,” Sawyer said. “We lost a four-year starting quarterback and our best running back is out. Some of these kids have never even played football before

because we haven’t had a junior varsity team for the past couple of seasons.” So the goal, Sawyer said, is to get his players acclimated to high school football as quickly as possible, while trying to assemble a cohesive unit. “We’re trying to teach these young kids how to play football and get them ready,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of basic drills in some cases. POCA, W.Va. — The Poca Dots can still lay claim to one of the most unique nicknames in all of West Virginia, but coach Bob Lemley, entering his 25th season, might be asking himself if there’s much else the Dots can hang their hat on in 2013. Poca limped to a 2-8 finish in Class AA in 2012, and hasn’t had a winning season since 2006. The most victories the Dots have laid claim to in that time was five in 2010. It’s yet to be seen if Poca has the

manpower to start to restore one of the most historically proud programs in Class AA football. The Dots have won five state titles, all in Class AA, in program history. Poca claimed the state crown in 1977 and 1994, followed by a dynastic run of three straight championships from 2001 through 2003. One player being counted on for a major contribution is senior halfback T.T. Loudin, a 1,000-yard rusher last season. Justin Stewart, a junior, is a newcomer playing quarterback. Stewart replaces Jake Payne who decided to not play this season. Senior Austin Byrd is a mainstay on the offensive and defensive lines. Anthony Lester is a senior fullback. Poca will have a tough test right off the bat, traveling to Class AAA Nitro on Aug. 30 for the team’s 2013 opener. The Dots host two-time defending state champion Wayne on Oct. 25, and travel to Tolsia on Nov. 8 for the season wrap.

Wahama White Falcons ready for an encore in 2013 By BEN FIELDS

MASON, W.Va. — You couldn’t have written a better script for the Wahama White Falcons in 2012. A gutsy call in overtime of the state championship saw quarterback Trenton Gibbs scamper into the end zone for a two-point conversion, giving the school a 43-42 win over Madonna and its first Class A state title. It also capped an undefeated season for the White Falcons. So, the question becomes, what do you do for an encore? It’s not something head coach Ed Cromley wants to think about right away. “The way we look at it, we’re going to go about our business the way we always do here,” Cromley said. “We’re going to take things day to day, game to game and hopefully get better each day.” Gibbs graduated in the spring, as did feature running back Zach Wamsley, who powered in from one yard out to score the touchdown that set up Gibbs’ winning conversion. The White Falcons do have running back Kane Roush, a senior, returning to the roster. Roush ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns in the state title game. Senior running back Chase Walton already has the school record for rushing yards and receiving yards with the 2013 campaign yet to play. “He’s been that hidden gem of a player,” Darst said. “He’s started three years for me, and he’s played on both sides of the ball for three years.” Also returning is quarterback Aden Yates, who threw for more than 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012. “We’re returning a lot of skill and a lot of size,” Darst said. Cody Mitchell — whose father, Darrell, played tight end for West Virginia University, and brother, Derek, is a senior linebacker at Marshall University — will see plenty of action at running back and wide receiver, while playing safety on defense. “He’s a Division One prospect, for sure,” Darst said of the 6-foot-3, 220 pound sophomore. He brings that toughness to the table for us.” As excited as Darst is about his squad, he’s practically giddy over the Black Knights’ schedule, which includes eight Class AAA schools and sees the return of the Ripley Vikings, a bitter rival dating back to the 1930s. The two play for “The Old Oaken Bucket” trophy, but haven’t met for the past seven seasons. “We used to play Ripley for years,” Darst said. “It’s one of our oldest rivalries, and we’re thrilled to be starting it back up. My grandfather was on one of those first Old Oaken Bucket teams back in 1932. It’s kind of neat to be playing for it again.”

ASHTON, W.Va. — For Hannan football, nothing has been easy over the past few years. The Wildcats finished 1-9 in 2012 and 3-10 in 2011. Hannan went winless in the two seasons before that. In all, the program has amassed a mere nine wins since 2004. The Wildcats have a tough schedule in 2013, including a game at Federal Hocking, Ohio, and hosting Ohio school Corning Miller and Twin Valley from Virginia. Head coach Michael Wallace will dress 22 players, including five seniors, for the 2013 season. Fairland Dragons bulk up for 2013 season By DAVID WALSH The Herald-Dispatch

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio — The classroom and locker room are two important stops during a day for Fairland football players. Now include the weight room. In season or out. Cullen Homolka made that point to his players when he was named as head coach of the Dragons in June. This is his first assignment as a head coach and on the high school level. He’s been a college assistant since he wrapped up his career as a fullback/special teams player at the University of Kansas (2003-05). “The kids did a great job in the weight room,” Homolka said. “They weren’t asked in the past. Six probably were in there. This summer we had 35 or 40. The kids had to adjust to me. It’s not easy. They survived and love it.” The players also did some heavy lifting outdoors as they pitched in to lay the new sod at Fairland Stadium. “I have a strong belief we do a lot

of things together,” Homolka said. “This is our home turf. We don’t want to let anyone come in and push us around.” Homolka spent 2012 as a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois University. He worked with the defensive line and the Huskies went 12-2, won the Mid-American Conference West title and then MAC title game to earn a BCS bowl bid against Florida State in the Orange Bowl. The Seminoles won, 31-10. “It was a dream come true,” Homolka said of the 2012 season. “But my wife’s (Kristin) is from here. Time to settle down a bit. I couldn’t be in a better situation.” Homolka has seen positive early results from the weight lifting. That

added size and speed will come in handy as he installs his style of play. Fast pace on offense including going to the air. “We’ll hit them in the mouth sometimes,” Homolka said. The new coach will count on offensive coordinator Brent Wilcoxon. “He’s been successful at it. I’m not going to hold him back. I trust him,” Homolka said. Defense is simple. “Get in the backfield and cause havoc,” Homolka said. “Linebackers, defensive Homolka backs read and react. Don’t stand around. Let the kids use their natural ability and speed and play physical.” Two key players back are the Bray brothers — De’vonte (275 pounds) and Dionte (315) — on the offensive and defensive lines. “They can be as good as anyone I’ve coached,” Homolka said. “They’ve got the ability to do a lot of things.” Another key starter back is quarterback Chance Short (10 TD passes

in 2012). “Every day he gets better,” Homolka said. “He made a lot of sacrifices. His summer was ours. He’s worked on his form. His preparation has been good.” Drew Norris backs him up. In the backfield are Evan Maddox, Nathan Campbell and Coleton Brumfield. “He’s a crucial part of our offense,” Homolka said of Maddox. Receivers are Derick Willis, Kyle Sowards and Trey Nester. “He has great hands and can play a lot of positions,” Homolka said of Sowards. “He’ll do anything you ask.” Up front are Jeff Mclain, Matt McComas, Zach McKinney, Tyler Campbell, Allen Woodall and Clayton Edmonds. I knew what to expect,” Vass said. “I’m more comfortable at this point than at this time last year. The kids are aware of the tradition. They know what they’re getting into, the sacrifices they have to make. They’ll try to keep going what coach Lutz has built.” Ironton has experience at tackle with seniors Tyler Webb (6-foot-5, 240 pounds) and Isaac Sherman (6-5, 290). We’ll see what we’re good at.” Up front on defense are Webb, Sherman, Taylor, Midkiff-Sands, Chase Hankins and Gage Riley. Bowling, Webb and Lucas Campbell are the ends. Bodmer is one of the linebackers. Cox, Long, Berry and Palladino make up the secondary. “You’ll see us more aggressive, fly to the ball,” Vass said. “You’ll see more enthusiasm. SOUTH POINT, Ohio — Rick Marcello watched South Point get pushed around in his first year as head football coach. In 2013, Marcello believes the Pointers will be better equipped to push back. “It was a tough year. You learn some hard lessons,” Marcello said of the 1-9 season. “The goal is to jell as a team. We’re on the right path.” Facing bigger, stronger, faster opponents, combined with trying to master the coach’s up-tempo offensive and defensive systems, made that first season less than memorable. Marcello said the players knew what they had to do to avoid a repeat. First stop was the weight room for off-season conditioning. “We got the kids to buy into the weight room,” Marcello said. “We were young and undersized. We weren’t as strong as we should be. We had a cou-

ple of guys bench press 300 (pounds). We weren’t close to that last year. “You have to go through adversity, learn what’s out there. It’s important. It can lead to success.” On offense, Marcello junked the Wing-T and unveiled a spread system — quarterback in the shotgun and three- to five-receiver sets utilized to force a defense to spread itself thin across the field to cover everyone. “It was culture shock,” Marcello said. “It was a real challenge for the quarterback and offensive line. They know what to expect now. Things come quicker and smoother. It’s a matter of

reps now. We’ll tweak some things. It depends on what we see from opponents. The person most comfortable in the system now is Gage Townson, who returns at quarterback. “He benefits more than any of the returning starters,” Marcello said. “He understands the offense. He’s more comfortable with reads and checks. He was hesitant to stay in the pocket. This year he does. That’s sign one things are jelling.” Marcello Up front, Tyler Nicely and Brady Schneider are back at guard and Anthony Brown and Andrew Munion return at tackle. Aaron Williams, Brendan Meadows and Joey Riner are working at center. “We’ve had good competition there. Anyone could emerge,” Marcello said. If the defense takes one thing away, we’ll do the other.” On defense, the Pointers will feature a 3-5-3 look. Marcello said he can go to a 5-man front if necessary. “It better fits our skill people,” Marcello said. “You have your athletes on the field.” Up front are Adam Beckett, Munion, Tyler Nicely, Riner, Meadows and Jacob Nicely. CHESAPEAKE, Ohio — Chesapeake coach Andy Clark has a leg up on the opposition going into the 2013 season. He’s got Chad Meadows available for duty at tailback and linebacker. “When he’s healthy, watch out,” Clark said of Meadows, who suffered a broken leg in the final scrimmage against Tolsia and missed all of 2012. “He’s a leader. He was our leading tackler two years ago.” Meadows is a senior, so he and his fellow seniors get first crack at playing in the school’s new stadium. The grass/dirt from 2010 is long gone and field turf is the surface now. Fans on the home side will have to climb quite a few steps to reach the top row of seats. For the visitors, the new seats are more numerous. Chesapeake played all its games on the road in 2012 and finished 5-5 over-

all and 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. “The kids love having a home field again,” Clark said. Five starters return on offense and four are up front. The veteran linemen are Mark McMillian, Hayden Straight and Quinton Harris. Austin Carpenter, the center in 2012, has moved to tight end. Andrew Saunders is back at split end and J.B. Brammer is getting reps there too. “The offensive line improved as the year went on,” Clark said. “We hope that carries over. The seniors expect it.

The seniors are helping the young guys out.” Clark said Carpenter is a player who’ll go where needed. “He wants to win,” Clark said. Chandler Sexton is the center now. Tackles include Thomas Riley, Cole Webb and John McFarland. Guards are Timmy Martin and Jacob Johnson. “We’ve got a shot at some depth,” Clark said. Senior Austin Stone is the Clark starting quarterback. He’s a transfer from George Washington in Charleston. “He’s learning what to do and so far is doing a good job,” Clark said. “He’s getting better every day.” The fullback is Maccoy Brown, a transfer from Huntington High. Halfbacks are Nate Smith and Brad Meadows. “It’s new stuff for the backs. They’re picking it up quick,” Clark said.

On defense, ends are Carpenter, Harris and Jacob Johnson. Down linemen are McMillian, Straight, Martin, McFarland and Webb. In addition to Chad Meadows, linebackers are Brad Meadows, Brown, Dakota Clark, Taze Sites and Shaden White. Brammer is the safety and joined in the secondary by Smith, Saunders and Stone. Wesley Stevens handles place kicking and kickoffs. Stone is the punter. “The kids have gotten after it,” Clark said. “We’ve got to improve on defense. The games we lost last year, what hurt was poor tackling. We’ve got to be more aggressive.” Clark had three evaluations of his Panthers under game conditions. They met Trimble and Tolsia at home in scrimmages and Rock Hill in the Ohio

Valley Conference preview. Once again, Chesapeake has a formidable non-league schedule. The season opener will be against Oak Hill on Aug. 30. It will be the team’s first home game in two years. The following week, West Virginia Class AA power Wayne pays a visit. The Pioneers are seeking a third straight state title. The Panthers go to Symmes Valley for their first road test followed by a trip to Lucasville Valley. A home game against Portsmouth West wraps up the first half of the season. All but West made the playoffs in 2012. Chesapeake begins OVC play with trips to River Valley and Fairland. Then it’s home against South Point, off to Coal Grove and back home for the finale against Rock Hill. Coal Grove is defending league champion and favored to repeat. “On paper, they’ve got the most back,” Clark said. “I’d like to think we’ll be in the mix.”

PEDRO, Ohio — Rock Hill coach Todd Knipp has issued a challenge of sorts to the offensive line. “We’ll be as good as they play,” Knipp said of the veteran unit up front for the Redmen. “We’re light years ahead over last year. We’re bigger, stronger, faster. They know the assignments.” Knipp’s assessment of the offensive line sort of mirrors the entire team.

“Tremendous job in the off-season,” Knipp said. “We’re all a lot bigger and stronger. We look like a varsity football team.” The Redmen seek to improve on a 1-9 mark in 2012.

Five of Rock Hill’s regulars up front are seniors, thus the optimism. They are left tackle Bryce Krum, center Seth Mannon, right guard Ethan Baker, right tackle Andrew Nickell and tight end Jordan Hairston. Gabe Marzicola returns at quarterback. The junior started the final five games a year ago. “He’s gotten better,” Knipp said. “He has a better feel for the offense. His arm is stronger and he’s making better reads.”

Wing backs are Jordan Blagg and Drew McClaskey. On offense, the Winged-T is back and spread attack is out. “We’ll be more of a possession-type team,” Knipp said. “It’s a breath of fresh air. We have more confidence in it. We have to be consistent in what we do.” On defense, the Redmen feature a 4-4 look. Ends are Baker, Nickell, Brian French, Mannon and Tanner Delong. “We’ve got competition. It’s going to be fun,” Knipp said. “The older guys got physically ready to run to the ball. They feed off one another. You can’t back off. If you do, someone jumps in and replaces you.” The Redmen had three scrimmages to get the systems down pat. One was against Chesapeake in the Ohio Valley Conference preview. “We’ll work to polish up the offense,” Knipp said. “On defense, just make sure we’re sound. We’re much improved. We scaled things back a bit and it helps us get to the ball better and do what we want to accomplish.” Rock Hill’s non-league schedule features Minford, Gallia Academy, Oak Hill, Portsmouth West and Wellston. No breaks there. “If that doesn’t get you ready, nothing will,” Knipp said. In the OVC, Knipp said defending champion Coal Grove merits top billing again. “Until someone knocks them off,” he said. Fairland has a new coach in Cullen Homolka and Chesapeake has a brand-new facility with field turf. “We have to be good at what we do,” Knipp said.

“I’d put those guys up against anyone in the state,” Seals said. “They’ve seen a lot of football and they all have proven themselves well for us.” All-state first team strong safety Clark Wilson moves into the quarterback position vacated by Mark Shaver, who has walked on at Marshall University. Seals said Wilson’s athleticism is undeniable, but he’s still developing that cool of a quarterback that was the trademark of Shaver. “You can tell Clark is a defensive-minded player,” Seals said. “We’d like to see him get to the point where he can calm down and keep the guys up whether it’s a good play or a bad play. He’s working at it, but it will take some time.” Seals said the offensive front is bigger than in years past, but the team is still replacing four guys who had lots of starting experience. The vocal leader of the team is left guard Nigale Cabell, who is joined by center Josh Fraley as the 2012 starters back along the front. “He (Cabell) looked at me the other day and said ‘This is my senior year. I want to get it right,’” Seals said. “He’s definitely stepped up and taken the leadership role, and, as I tell all the seniors, the time is ticking. Everything they do from here on is the last time for high school.”

Joining Cabell and Fraley on the front will be tackles Kyle Blankenship, Cameron Oney and Jacob Blackburn while right guard will be Dwan Wheeler with Shamar Ingram also in the mix. “We feel like we’re more physical this year up front,” Seals said. “With the number of guys we lost last year, we feel like it will take some time but this group of guys will be very good football players. Defensively, the front for Huntington High could be among the best in the state with both size and speed on the outside. The middle of the defensive front is Ingram and Cabell — a pair of brutish tackles — while the end positions could be highlighted by virtual unknown Kilan Nicks, who formerly played for national power Mallard Creek (N.C.). “When you come back with two heavy hammers like Shamar and Nigale inside, you have to feel good,” Seals said. “Kilan has been a nice surprise for us as well and we have Kyle Blankenship there, too, who was a starter last year.” Nicks, who is the brother of Arick Nicks (also a defensive end), is a 6-foot-5, 245-pound defensive end with speed to bring down ball carriers on the outside. At linebacker, Greg May and Matt Shaver returns as starters while Ryan Gatrell and Stefan Gibbs also have experience. The secondary features Crawford and Brandon Morrison at the corners while Wilson returns to the safety spot.

Tolsia a mystery team heading into season By BEN FIELDS

GLENHAYES, W.Va. — Tolsia Rebels football coach Mike Smith knows he’s got 33 players dressed for the 2013 season. How the Class AA team will come together is still anyone’s guess. The Rebels went 0-10 in 2011, but made remarkable progress last season, evening out at 5-5. Just looking at the records, it would seem the Rebels are due to improve even more in 2013. But last year’s squad had 13 seniors. Going into 2013, Tolsia is heavy with freshmen and sophomores, while only having six seniors on the roster. “I think we have tremendous potential, maybe not for this season, but maybe for down the road,” Smith said. “I think we’re always going to struggle

a little bit just because of numbers. It kind of puts you in a situation where, if you lose one or two guys, it could change your entire season. “That’s something that I think we will struggle with this season. Our top 15, 16 guys are pretty solid, but you start getting into the number twos and you’re going from an 18-year-old senior to a 14-year-old freshman, if you’ve been around this sport you know what a difference that is.” The Rebels return a stout defense, but Smith is still trying to figure out what will work when it comes to gen-

erating points. Among the departures from the 2012 squad were starting quarterback Blake Roberts, wide receiver Morgan Williamson, receiver/ running back Dakota Robertson and running back Terry Davis. “I can’t really say who our key guys are going to be because it’s still kind of up in the air,” Smith said in an interview 11 days before the start Smith of the season. “Offensively, in our first scrimmage, we really weren’t productive at all. or if things will change, but I do know we’ve got to get a whole lot better up front. We’ve got some big bodies, it’s just a situation where, if they grow up in a hurry, we can be decent. If they don’t, it’s probably going to be a long season.” The Rebels do return running back Brandon Ward, who saw some action last season, including a 56-yard touchdown run in a victory over Poca. Tolsia faces a challenge right out of the gate, opening its season at Wayne. The Pioneers have won back-to-back Class AA state titles. Other tests include an Oct. 18 game at Scott, and a Nov. 1 match up at Kentucky Class 4A school Boyd County. The Rebels best season of late came in 2006, when Tolsia went 11-3 and finished as Class AA runner up.

Talented Knights look to keep on rolling

ONA — In 2012, Cabell Midland used a power rushing attack to roll its way into the Class AAA title game against Martinsburg. Gone are running backs David Gaydosz and Lowell Farley, but the Knights are reloaded in the backfield and have the tools necessary to make another run at the playoffs. “Expectations are high from them and they want to do well,” Cabell Midland head coach Luke Salmons said. “They feel like they are part of something.” The Knights’ backfield will be alive and well with a pair of additions — Huntington High’s Donte Hendricks and Point Pleasant’s Teran Barnitz — as well as returnees Kasey Thomas and Alex Childers. Salmons likes what his entire backfield brings to the table.

“They’re great players and Kasey Thomas is back and will be really good this year,” Salmons said. “He’s coming off an injury where he was never 100 percent last year and Childers is a tough kid — pound-for-pound, one of our strongest. “That’s part of the system, though.
