DRAW TAILORING FLATS

Double click on the shape builder tool to check the gap detection is turned on. Select all parts of the lapel then use the shape builder tool to divide the lapel into separate closed paths. Check you have been successful by selecting (with Direct selection tool) and filling the separate closed paths.

Draw a line ž length of the button hole. Use .25 - .5 stroke weight. Duplicate. Hold down shift and pull out an ellipse to form the round buttonhole end. Move the horizontal lines so that they contact with the ellipse


DRAW TAILORING FLATS

Use the Shape builder tool to define the ellipse center. Delete the space between the anchor points using the direct selection tool and cmd:X. Use the Direct Selection tool to select the anchor points at the end of the line with those on the ellipse. Use the hot keys cmd:J to join each side in turn.

Check the shape has ‘round caps and corners’

Select the whole shape.

Go to Effect: Distort & Transform : Zigzag; to convert the lines to zigzag stitching.

Resize the button hole is required by selecting and using the scale tool. Adjust the stroke weight If needed. Here I used .35pt weight.

Copy and paste in front (on a new layer) the side of the top collar. Draw out from the last anchor points (top and bottom) to the center line. Use the colour picker to fill with 40% grey.
