Salisbury Swing Band kicks off festivities for Pops at the Post

ophones, trumpets, tromBy Brian Dlugosz brian.dlugosz@salisburypost.com bones, drums, guitar, bass It’s hard to put a finger on just what swing music sounds like. Ask the average person and they may tell you it resembles Big Band tunes, mid-century dance numbers, or something else altogether.

For the Salisbury Swing Band, however, there’s no reason to narrow down their songs with just one genre or label. With a repertoire that covers all of the big musical eras and trends from the 20th century and even some tunes from today, this is one band that literally can do it all.

In order to pull off so many different genres within the swing style, the band includes over a dozen musicians playing instruments such as sax-

and piano with a vocalist to go along with them as well.

With so many different sounds and styles, the band is sure to put on a show and play some songs for everyone during Pops at the Post on June 4. The Swing Band will perform on the Bell Tower Green stage starting at 5 p.m.

Jim Graczyk, president of the band, expressed excitement over the event, ex plai ni ng that group was “looking forward to having a good time” with the show and called Bell Tower Green a “gorgeous venue” the band is excited about returning to play.

Graczyk said returning to live shows has taken some time for the group following canceled performances in prior years due to COVID-19, making the

Event Coordinator for the band, Doug Lawrence, pointed out that the group is “very non profit” and that they emphasize working on a volunteer basis while giving back to the community through their events. Lawrence said the group plans to have 16 or so band members at the Pops show, with each contributing something unique to the diverse style of music for the night.

National Guard will bring Black Hawk helicopter to Pops at Post

SALISBURY — As a way of saying thank you to the community for its consistent support of the local military posts, the Army National Guard will return to participate in the June 4 Pops at the Post, bringing a Black Hawk helicopter, among other equipment, for the public to see up close and personal.

Major Jack Potvin, the 449th Combat Aviation Brigades Logistics Officer and the Supervisory Instructor Pilot at Army Aviation Support Facility No. 2, said the helicopter will land in the former Wachovia Bank parking lot that Saturday morning before the rest of the event gets set up.

“The wind from the rotors cuts a pretty wide swath, so anyone who wants to be there for the arrival or

the take-off should make sure they are at least 150 feet away,” said Potvin. “The Bell Tower Park is probably a good, safe viewing spot.”

Potvin said there is not yet a definite arrival time but anticipates it should be about 9 a.m. He said soldiers from Charlie Company 1-131 and equipment will remain on hand throughout the event.

This will be the first time in about eight years the National Guard has been able to participate. Military budget restrictions limited participation in any non-military events for several years, Potvin said, and then COVID restrictions kicked in. He said he’s glad to be able to get back to something his boss started years ago.

“When I started flying here in the Guard, my boss started this as a way of thanking the community for their support,” he said.

Depending on availability, Potvin said they may also bring a firefighting truck and, if possible, a small flight control tower, so the men and women of the unit can “show off some of the equipment they use.” The helicopter’s doors will be open so people can get photos of themselves or their children inside the aircraft as well.

Potvin joined the military in 2004, serving three years of active duty before taking time to attend college. He then spent a year in flight school and was on two active deployments in Kuwait and Iraq. He is currently assigned to a post in Raleigh, and with active drills the weekend of June 4, is unsure if he will get to the concert personally. But he said he has complete confidence those in attendance will represent the Guard well.

Pops embracing social district spirit this year

Downtown Salisbury is planning to implement a social district in the coming weeks, allowing people to purchase alcohol in specially marked cups from state-licensed businesses and restaurants and walk around a designated area.

While the district won’t be operational when the Salisbury Symphony and Swing Band play at the Salisbury Post and Bell Tower Green on June 4, Pops at the Post’s organizers decided to embrace the spirit of the district anyway. New Sarum Brewing
