"You had a big loss, and the hurt that comes from that can come out in surprising ways. It does not mean you are crazy, it means you are human."

Never Have I Ever

Dr. Ryan is like a therapist next door who not only provides Devi with a safe pace to be herself, but also keeps up with Devi’s fickle behaviors towards therapy. In season 1 - we find Dr. Ryan being more confrontational and focused with Devi in discussions about how she has been trying to ignore the grief and emotional turmoil as a consequence of her father’s sudden demise. We find Devi dealing with her raging teen hormones, her increased family tensions, academics and emotional drama at school. Devi even develops a psychosomatic disorder as a result of her emotional build up. In season 2 - we see Devi being more regular to therapy which indicates her trust on Dr. Ryan.

Devi is not really good at processing and understanding her emotions and we see a lot of events where she questions her sense of self and acts on impulse In this particular scene right here, we finally see Devi reaching an emotional peak and asking her therapist if she is really “crazy.” Dr. Ryan capitalizes on the opportunity to psychoeducate her about psychosomatic disorders and how grief can come out in surprising ways. She also in her own words lets Devi know that she might be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and explains to her that she feels a lot, which means she will lead a life that is emotionally rich and beautiful. Devi calms down after that and cracks a joke.

Even though media representations are not always the best portrayals of actual therapy sessions, ‘Never have I ever’ does a good job at giving a clue about what to expect from therapy. Expect your therapist to give you a different perspective, be supportive, validate your emotions, provide a safe space for opening up, psycho-educate you and most importantly, confront you about issues that you find difficult to process.
