Therapist Self-Care Looking out for others is important but looking out for ourselves is required to have the emotional capacity to deal with others.
Few tips for therapist self-care: Make adequate time for yourself. Take scheduled breaks. Hangout with friends. Exercise regularly, and have a healthy diet. Limit your work hours and caseload.
Participate in activities and hobbies that you enjoy. Regularly participate in relaxation activities such as meditation, yoga, reading, music, etc. Take care of yourself physically and spiritually. Say NO! Don’t isolate yourself.
Conduct periodic distress and competence self-assessments and seek help when it is needed. Focus on prevention. Seek out personal psychotherapy. Accept that you’re human, in need of assistance, and a work in progress. Don’t try to be perfect, to have it all, or to do it all. Know your limits and be realistic.
