WATER CULTURES: BARCELONA a case study in urban ecotourism

How can tourism encourage visitors and hosts to become disseminators of sustainable practices? Residents of an urban ecosystem develop certain behaviors to survive within their environment, and have the potential to share their experience with visitors. Because of water’s scarcity in the region, efficient water consumption is a necessary part of daily life in Barcelona. An international tourism center, Barcelona is in a key position to become a leader in sustainable water advocacy, inspiring its visitors to engage in more thoughtful habits. As primary hosts of the city’s visitors, hotels have the potential to take a leading role. How can the hotel environment motivate a visitor to change his behavior? In July 2011, 10 design students and professionals came together for the Water Cultures: Barcelona workshop, to design an exhibition for the Hotel Barceló Raval. The proposed interventions will create new social networks within the hotel and celebrate sustainable behavior. Each visitor will have an opportunity to become a ‘node’ in the network that initiates change.

ICE-CRAFT: FROZEN MESSAGES Chicagoland residents rely on Great Lakes water for life, withdrawing over 1 billion gallons of fresh water from Lake Michigan each day. Since Chicago’s reversal of the Chicago River in 1900, the lake’s water is used, treated, and diverted to the Mississippi River, and ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico. This water is not returned to the lake. Reflection upon this chain of events provokes an urge to pause this cycle, to delay the loss. Each gallon of Lake Michigan water pours from the tap to create 39 modules of ice. The water is intercepted, and a dialogue is initiated. Temporary messages – water becomes ice becomes water. A final message, “precious,” is placed along the shore. Eight gallons of water, cast frozen, and carried to the boundary between city and lake. The flow is (re)reversed, and the water is returned to its original source.
