Carolyn’s Chronicles

info@edwardsproductionsllc.com

As I sit writing this column, I’m having trouble actually sitting still. Later today I am leaving for our condo in Fenwick Island, DE for five whole days. I can’t remember the last time I had five whole days off. I’ll be spending some time doing girl things with some friends and our daughter, Jessica, son in law Tom and three grandchildren are coming down. I’m not sure if I’ll get any rest, but I know it will be lots of fun. My grandson, Shane has already requested that we go to Tequila Mockingbird. Shane is the taco king and can scarf down two of theirs in the blink of an eye. I’m not sure what Cassidy’s request will be, but I do know she like Candy Kitchen. As for Princess Kendall, we all pretty much just do what she wants. After all, there are perks to being a princess. On June 4, I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of my very special friend, Bliss Rawlings, nee Isaacson. Some of our advertisers may remember Bliss from the Nor’easter where she worked for several years as a graphic designer. Bliss and husband Doug opted for an outdoor wedding in the backyard of their home, which is just beautiful. It was somewhat of a Nor’easter reunion with myself, Barb Barrett and Kelly McGaw in attendance. I prepared the food for the reception, Barb did all the flowers and Kelly decorated the backyard. Kelly being a number of years younger than Barb and I, partied the night away. It took Barb and me nearly a week to recover. Now we remember why we gave up catering and floral arranging! It was worth every minute though. It was such an honor to be a part of this wonderful day and to do something to make a friend’s special day be all that she wanted it to be. Last week I had the pleasure of finally meeting one our writers face to face. For nearly a year now Dick Greenwood and I communicated by phone and email, but never met. Well, let me tell you, this man is a hoot. We met at Woody’s Crab House in North East for lunch so obviously things got off to a good start from the get-go. Dick is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. His adventures around the world could keep one entertained for

Mid-Atlantic Boating

days on end. I very much enjoyed his article in Mid Atlantic Boating, but meeting him in person was absolutely wonderful. Dick is off to Alaska for his next adventure. I can’t wait to read about this trip and just know that there will be some fabulous pictures. As I was watching the local news this morning, the newscaster made mention of the fact that over the past weekend he had gotten crabs and there was no doubt they were local Chesapeake Bay crabs. I think we can all agree that there just isn’t another crab in the world that has the flavor of these crabs. For the past 30 years or so, we have been lucky enough to be able to get crabs from our neighbor, who is a commercial fisherman. Now that Jessica is married, we usually have them at her home. The grandkids love trying to pick the crabs out of the bushel basket with tongs, but then of course, hop around screaming if the crabs get a little close. Anyone who lives on the Bay knows that it just isn’t summer until you have that first steamed crab, an ear of corn and an ice cold beer. Send us a note and let us know where your favorite place is for crabs. The Fourth of July is nearly upon us. Isn’t it amazing that no matter how old we are, fireworks on the 4th brings out the oohs and ahhs in all of us. In North East, we have our fireworks on July 3rd. It is our annual Cecil County Salute to Veterans event, which is held in the North East Community Park on the banks of the Northeast River. We have a family tradition of watching the fireworks from the home where my husband, Jess grew up, which our grandchildren call Old Pop-pop’s. I guess this means that Jess is Young Pop-pop. My in-laws are no longer with us, but I am sure they are there in spirit watching the current generation of kids running around their yard. Typically, we have lots of friends and family there and start the evening out by having a picnic. At dusk the fireworks spectacular starts and is the perfect culmination to the tradition. Until next month, enjoy your summer, your boating and your fishing. Isn’t the Chesapeake Bay a wonderful place to live!

New Kid on the Block Dick Greenwood

According to one source, “The kayak was first created by the Inuit, an artic people. Their first kayaks were made from wooden frames covered in seal skin. They included a small hole in the middle craft for the user to sit in and were primarily used for hunting.” The first one I ever saw wasn’t made of wood and animal skins, but it sure left a lasting impression in my mind. I was rafting on the Lehigh River in eastern Pennsylvania with my wife and kids—this was probably in 1989 or 1990— when we came around a bend in the river and beheld a curious sight. It was a young guy sitting in something that looked

6

like a vision from an episode of Yukon King and Sergeant Preston of the Mounties. I read a couple of issues of National Geographic, so I was able to figure out that it was a kayak. But this one was made of yellow plastic. So here was this guy, sitting in a yellow plastic kayak and perched on a huge stone ledge that was about eight feet above the river. The prow of the kayak extended out over the water, and he had it set up so he was right near the edge. Well, the current on this particular day was pretty mild, so we slowed down and watched as he moved, inch-by-inch, toward the edge. When he had moved as close to

the edge as he could without the cockpit being over the water, he lay his paddle athwart the kayak, reached out on either side, and simultaneously lifted and propelled himself forward and off the ledge. Almost immediately everyone watching gasped. Clearly, it was his intention to enter the water bow first and let the buoyancy of the kayak bring him to the surface. His plan had one small flaw: from the cockpit of the kayak to the tip of the bow was about 4 feet. The depth of the river where he was entering was about 3 feet. He flew off the edge of the boulder, his bow immediately pointed straight down, and after 8 feet of gaining momentum the bow entered the water and almost immediately struck the rock bottom of the river. Inertia being what it is, the guy’s slammed against the rim of the cockpit absorbing all the impact with his stomach.

There are some sounds that stick in my mind: my first child’s first words, the sound of my mother’s calling voice at suppertime, the sputtering of my plane’s engine that time when I blew a piston while taking off from Visalia, California, and the “THUNK – OOOFF” of the boat hitting and driving the air out of the poor character in the kayak. He hit bottom with great force, the kayak balanced on the bow for a second or two, while he flopped around like a dying fish. Then the craft recoiled upward, its pilot continuing to flop about lifelessly. The guy was completely knocked out; but, thank heavens, the presence of some quick thinking friends saved him from being drowned. Pulled to shore, he regained his composure, but his moans conveyed the message that he was badly hurt. In our boat we heaved a collective gasp and then felt relief when it was clear that in spite of a very sore stomach and a battered ego the poor planner would live to push his luck another day. As the saying goes, that was then; this is now. Talking with Jack Gelb, the assistant manager of West Marine’s North East, Maryland, store, it’s clear that kayaking has become both more of a mainstream activity and a big business over the last few years; and in a market where people are increasingly nervous about fuel prices, kayaks are a big draw. “For somewhere between $300 and $700, a person can get a kayak and be on his or her way to experiences that

things should be kept in mind: remember that kayaks are low to the water, so be careful when you’re operating around large, moving boats; if you decide to try the suicide plunge into a body of water, check the depth and make sure it’s greater than the length of your kayak.

Mid-Atlantic Boating gets literally hundreds of press releases each month, announcing marine and boating related products. Some are new and innovative while others are simply relabeled current products. We’ll do our best to select the best of the new products and bring them to you each issue.

Yanmars Power Universal Water taxis 12,000+ Hours The innocent-looking water taxis at Universal Orlando Resort are actually hard-working craft hiding behind their pretty wood finishes, running all day, every day of the year. Nearly constant use has been no problem for the Yanmar 4JH5E diesels powering four of the taxis, two of which have logged more than 12,000 hours each. A new boat using the dependable Yanmar 54 hp engine is also under construction, all supplied by Mastry Engine Center. The free taxis run between Universal City Walk and the onsite Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock

Hotel and Portofino Bay Hotel. The 40’ canopied boats, accommodating 50 passengers, work from park opening until after midnight, 365 days a year. Each hotel has a dedicated taxi visiting every 15 minutes, putting heavy demands on the engines. Adding to the stress is a docking maneuver that includes a hard turn, running the engine forward while taking on passengers, then spinning the drive 180° to reverse the process. The 4-cylinder, water-cooled 4JH5E Yanmar engines, running on a bio-diesel blend, have stood up to the test and then some. The Yanmar powering It’s A Wrap has logged more than 13,000 hours. Reel Thrill’s engine has already helped transport resort guests for more than 12,000 hours, while the newer taxis Silver Screen and Take Two have over 9,000 hours between them.

“We continue to be impressed by Yanmar’s outstanding dependability,” said Mastry’s general manager, Kevin Carlan. “From our perspective, this is a huge success story, as the engine’s performance has exceeded our expectations. The compact 54 hp 4JH5E diesel proves itself in many highuse applications, and is great for light-duty commercial use.”

It’s not often but there are those times when things come together in such a way that they form a “memorable” moment, or as we used to say a Kodak moment.

To accommodate the learning process, Haven Charters, supplies eight boats and matches eight highly experienced Captains from around the Bay with crews from CHA. To ensure the “happiness” and the well being of eight potentially grumpy salty sailors, Haven Charters provides a service boat, manned most ably by my wife and daughter. This boat would supply the meals for the Captains, act as command/communications center and a location for an evening repose and debriefing. The hoped for result of this synergy is three days of interactive learning. The unknown factor,

For the second year the Chestnut Hill Academy selected Haven Charters to host their annual sailing event. ahead to The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to arrange for the arrival of the fleet. The staff at the Museum is to be commended for their assistance and professional composure upon, during and at the departure of the on-the-water class room.

Thursday dawned with great promise, NOAA; SSW winds 10 to 15 gusty. Just off R FL “2” the fleet was sailing with some informal racing between the Captains. The students caught the spirit and quickly applied the Rules-of-the-Road as we gybed out of the river out onto

Eastern Bay for some closehauled sailing. Excitement and participation ran high as we fell off around Bloody Point Light. On the Bay the wind held steady giving each student an opportunity to helm in a following sea, running wing on wing and gybing onto a reach while making for the center spans of the Annapolis Bay Bridge navigating to Sillery Bay. Anchored off Dobbins Island the young men spent the evening swimming as the Captains keep a weather eye to the storms moving north and west of our location. The weather would hold with another great day of sailing being forecast for Friday. NOAA forecast was spot on as we sailed past Mountain Point on Gibson Island. We sailed on a starboard tack, beam reach-

ing all the way to G C “3” out of Rock Hall. The skills learned over the past two days were sharpened with each student sensing and appreciating their personal and team achievements. A personal note. Each of the four young men aboard my boat displayed respect for my position, a marked level of accountability, responsibility and a desire to learn. Later in a debrief with all Captains each shared the same observations. Sometimes all things comes together. And for three days in May a charter company, nine captains, a support boat, a cook, 34 young men, and their chaperons from Chestnut Hill Academy were given excellent sailing weather all to form a Kodak moment.

dered awhile and then asked Wade about it. They commenced to argue about the last bottom job. The only thing they could agree on was that it wasn’t any sooner than two years ago but might be three or even four. Well, the Judge was really taken aback, ‘specially since he has to keep putting on that ‘spensive $300 a gallon paint he gets up at the fancy boat store. He asked lefty how much we’d paid for our paint. Lefty ain’t real great at remembering things but he thought it was about $20 a gallon or so. The Judge asked to look at the paint can to se what brand it was. The Judge kept badgering Lefty and Wade about the paint even after they dug an old can out of the trash in the back of the pickup. The Judge kept saying he could believe the way that paint lasted and how good the bottom of the work boat looked after all this time. Lefty and Wade just kept on patchin’ the bottom of the work boat and fielding the Judge’s questions about the paint as best they could recollect. He asked questions about every aspect of the paint he

could think of. What kind or brushes did they use? Which ever one hadn’t been left to harden up. What did they sand the bottom of the boat with? Sand? Who sands? Well, after about half a day of quizin’ the boys, the Judge rushes of to the boat store up the road to grab some of the paint. “Course by the time the Judge hit the store, the cost had risen to about $100 a gallon. Nevertheless, the Judge picked up enough to give his fishin’ skiff a good coat of bottom paint. The Judge worked away and had the paint on in time to put the boat back in the water by late that afternoon. The Judge thanked the guys and said he’d be shovin; off for his fish camp down the bay. He’d be back that fall to let them know how the paint had worked. As the Judge idled out of the cover, Wade turned to lefty and said, “You know, we forgot to tell him about addin’ some of Sam’s secret recipe to thin out the paint, think it will make any difference?” Other than that, it’s been a slow week here in Purgatory Cove.

Fly By Wire Paul Esterle FBW or Fly By Wire is a term more often applied to aircraft control systems. However, recent innovations by Beneteau and ZF Marine are moving FBW systems into the marine environment. First some background information about aircraft control systems and how it applies to our recreational vessels. Early aircraft control systems, like marine control systems, were purely mechanical. Cables and pulleys were used to provide the force, from the rudder pedals and control stick, to the control surfaces. Pull the stick back 2 inches and the elevator would move a corresponding amount. The same amount of movement each time for a given stick movement. However, a coordinate turn in an aircraft requires simultaneous application of rudder and ailerons to effect a smooth, non-skidding turn. That coordination was provided by the Mark One Flight Computer, the

human pilot. The pilots, through their training, provide the necessary skills to properly control the aircraft. As airplanes became faster and heavier, mechanical control systems became less and less effective. The heavier control loads required more power than the human pilot could provide. Hydraulic systems were introduced to boost that human power output. The next leap forward was to completely disconnect the control inputs (stick and rudder) from the flight control surfaces. Sensors on the controls fed electronic signals by wire, to the flight control computers. Those computers, in turn, supplied control signals to the flight control surfaces. The final step in this development lead to intelligent FBW systems applied to aircraft that were inherently unstable. These aircraft were kept under control by the flight computers

making thousands of corrections a minute during flight. The computers accepted human input from the controls and calculated the required signals to the flight control surfaces to result in the movement the pilot requested. Without the flight computers, controlled flight was impossible. With the computers, controlled flight is practical and, in many cases, results in superior maneuverability. An early example is the Have Blue test aircraft, predecessors to the F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft. Known as the “Wobblin’ Goblin”, it was inherently unstable around all three axes. So how does all this translate to the boats we operate? As in early aircraft, most boat control systems are mechanical. Many sailboat rudders are still controlled by cables wrapped around drums and around pulleys. Power boats often use push-pull cables or hydraulic rudder

BOAT SHOW PRICING

systems. Single and twin screw boats are all controlled with mechanical or hydraulic systems. Bow thrusters came on the scene to make docking safer and more controlled. However, the coordination of the stern propulsion and bow thruster application was still done by the Mark One Control system, the human operator. Docking was a matter of practice, proactive practice, even with the aid of bow thrusters.

powered and have two speeds, on or off. The ZF bow thruster is AC powered. This provides two significant advantages. First the AC drive motor can be modulated to provide different thrust levels, from zero to full power. Secondly, the AC motor is designed to run cooler, allowing up to 30 minutes of operational use. Most DC bow thrusters have to shut down to cool off after five minutes or so.

A recent development in recreational boat propulsion is pod drives. These consist of pods with propellers slung below the craft. These pods can be rotated to provide forward, side-to-side and reverse thrust. Joystick controls in the cockpit make controlling these pods easy and intuitive, Fly By Wire for boats, in other words. Since we’re no longer flying, we need to use a different acronym, SWB (Steer By Wire). Ads in aircraft, the final iteration was to provide computer control of these functions. A single joystick provides control input from the human operator. The control computers interpret these control inputs and figure out the required pod positioning and thruster power levels to provide the requested movement of the boat. It should come as no surprise, given the proliferation of “self parking” features on new automobiles, that the main thrust in marine control systems is focused on docking. In as much as steering in open water is relatively uncomplicated, modern recreational marine developments have focused on the problems of control in tight places. Two such systems have recently been announced, one for sailboats and a second aimed at primarily power boats. Beneteau Dock&Go Beneteau recently announced their Dock&Go system for several of their sailboats. A key component of this system is the modified Yanmar 75 hp sail drive unit. Dock&Go is an option on three Beneteau models using that engine, the Sense (50’), Oceanis 46 and the Oceanis 50. As mentioned, the modified Yanmar 75 hp sail drive unit is a critical component in the system. Normally, a sail drive unit is fixed in position and would provide either forward or reverse thrust. The modified sail drive can turn 90 degrees to port or starboard, providing the side-to-side thrust for the stern. The sail drive is

Mid-Atlantic Boating

rotated by an electric motor and can be rotated in about half a second, providing quick and precise control. The bow is controlled by a bow thruster. A controller utilizes input from the joystick to synconize and control the pivoting sail drive and the bow thruster, providing precision control over docking. The controller also automatically locks the helm when Dock&Go is operational. ZF Pod Drives and Easidock ZF Marine Group has been in the forefront of developing pod drive systems for power boats. Single and dual pod drive installations are no quite common on larger boats. ZF has built on their past innovations to arrive at a total marine control system. The heart of the propulsion package from ZF Marine incorporates 3 main components: 1. The ZF 2800 Series POD drive rated at 480-bhp. This POD has been redesigned to offer 180 degrees of total movement (90 degrees of rotation to both port and starboard from the centerline). 2. The ZF 185 AC Thruster that was introduced to the market at last year’s Fort Lauderdale boat show. The ZF 185 Thruster was designed to offer proportional thrust, 30 minute continuous duty cycle, and smooth, quiet operation thanks to a patented thruster tube design.

All this is monitored and controlled through the ZF SmartControl system and a maneuvering control unit that integrates a joystick into the system. SmartControl is a NEMA 2000 based control system linking all the disparate parts together and seamlessly controlling them. I got a quick briefing on the process from ZF’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Martin Meissner. To begin docking operations, the main throttle is placed in neutral. The control button on the joystick is then pressed, giving the joystick control of the boat. At this time the rear pod is centered and the bow thruster powered up. In normal operation, the rear pod swivels 30 degrees each side of the centerline for steering control. Under docking operations, the pod is unlocked so it can swivel up to 90 degrees port and 90 degrees starboard, allowing the boat to move sideways. When the control button on the joystick is released, the rear pod centers and the boat can be controlled by the main throttle. In addition, if the main throttle is moved from neutral, control is transferred from the joystick.

system developed for use in automobiles. One way of visualizing a NEMA 2000 network is to think of it as the internet. Devices connect to it and send messages back and forth, like emails across the internet. Specific messages can be directed to specific devices while other messages go to multiple devices. The messages provide data or issue commands. The layout and content of those messages is defines by the NEMA 2000 standard and any compliant device can be seamlessly connected to the network. This “plug and ply” feature greatly simplifies getting complex electronic devices to talk to each other. Compliant devices can be anything from a smart genset to an autopilot, from engine controls to tank monitors. This all sounds wonderful and it can be. The only fly in the ointment is that several manufacturers have developed their own NEMA 2000 standards, different from the established ones. Raymarine, Furuno, Garmin and Mercury all have their own versions. These proprietary networks require conversion devices to properly communicate over NEMA 2000. Finally Current prices for these systems aren’t cheap, but as the technology matures, more systems will be available and prices should start to moderate. At least I hope so!

NEMA 2000 – More than just wires A key step in the development of these advanced marine control systems was the adoption of something called NEMA 2000. NEMA 2000 is first of all a data network, providing a communications path between devices. It is also a communication standard, specifying how devices talk to each other. It is based upon the CANbus (Controller Area Network)

Black Walnut Point Inn If you want to go to a place that even put’s paradise to shame and is very close to home. A place that the world has used and is so peaceful that a touch of heaven is at every spot you look. Then the Black Walnut Point Inn is where you want to be. This secluded gem, in Maryland private island estate has been sealed off by Russian spies, housed the CIA, and the

first Gulf War was planned in the sunroom. The Black Walnut Point Inn was a religious retreat for five years. Now the sanctuary gate secures the halfmile drive through 52 acres of bird sanctuary before opening to our 6 acre island of gardens and lawn. The sun rises over the Choptank River and sets over the Chesapeake Bay, which makes wind, waves and endless water views the hallmark. A pair of nesting eagles, resident osprey, migrating butterflies, waterfowl and songbirds are commonly seen along with Bay dolphin; and the back cove is a spawning grounds for rockfish. At night the stars are uninterrupted, another sur-

prise of nature, making lodging at Black Walnut Point Inn a quiet, secret place of peace - all just an hour and a half from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. They are open year-round, so everything is heated and air conditioned. Their cabins feature private screened-in porches, full kitchens, gas fireplaces and king-sized beds overlooking the Choptank. Within twenty feet of the water each has windows that run their length, and Yew-tree and Red Cedar cabins have pullout futons for extra guests, or to snuggle in front of the fire. In fact, the warmth, privacy and comfort of the entire Inn is a frequent haven for those on their honeymoon and babymoon. Pine Tree cabin is ADA compliant with comfortable upholstered rockers, all are equipped with TV, VCR and DVD players, and all guests are welcome at breakfast. Private Cabins are available with a 20% discount when you stay between Labor Day and Memorial Day on Sunday thru Thursdays.

Enjoy the Main 1840’s houseThe Tilghman room is spacious but cozy with hand-hewn black walnut beams, a kingsized bed overlooking the pool and point, a day bed and chaise lounge. The Talbot room has a cathedral ceiling with two steps down or up into the bath, a day bed, broad hope chest, and sitting area under look-out windows. The airy Bay room overlooks the point, western bulkhead and northern bird sanctuary, has a day bed and a reading corner with rocking chairs. The Attic Hideaway is between the gables, has a separate bath with the vanity in the room, a queen-sized bed and built in wooden chests around the chimney. A queen-sized

futon at the top of the stairs can accommodate two more in a pinch. By far, the most popular activity on this eastern shore point is doing nothing. But the pool, hot tub and long gravel drive encourage unwinding with a good book or slowing to a ramble, and only occasionally lifting binoculars. The constant sound of waves and the waterfront view in every direction help one stand still. Inevitably, guests take advantage of a hammock, Adirondack chair or chaise lounge. The Black Walnut Point Inn serves breakfast from 8am to 10am and offer tea and snacks. You can bring your favorite drink to store in the house refrigerator or a cabin’s kitchen. They have a grill by the pool, and offer a pantry service for picnic lunches, crackers and cheese, and simple ready-tocook dinners are available for guests staying in a cabin. Black Walnut Point Inn would like to encourage everyone to bring bikes, kayaks or canoes or you can rent them. There is plenty to explore by foot also. In addition to the pool, the great lawn is perfect for croquet, the dock has landed substantial rockfish, and there is always a good breeze for kite flying. Want to get romantic? Black Walnut Point Bed and Breakfast has an expansive water view from every room, perfect for celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. In fact, couples can view miles of open water in the cabins and Tilghman room from their king-sized beds. The staff at the Black Walnut Point Inn can enhance your romance with a surprise of

chocolates, roses, or a cake to share in your room or private screened-in porch. You can even schedule a massage for you and your loved one. Want to step out? Tilghman Island has several fine restaurants from fine dining to bistros overlooking the drawbridge at Knapp Narrows, and St. Michaels is twenty minutes away. Back on the island there are fishing charters, lighthouse tours with Captain Mike Richards or romantic sails with Captain Jeff Mathias on the Lady Patty. Or sail with Captain Wade on the oldest registered skipjack built in 1886, on the Rebecca T. Ruark, which you can book on their reservation page.

Off the island, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum holds events such as the Classic Boat Show, Folk Festival, Boat Auction, Concourse d’Elegance Car Show, Small Craft Festival and OysterFest. Christmas in St. Michaels is one of many festivals along with the Log Canoe Races . The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry established in 1683 is a charming ride to quaint shops and restaurants across the Choptank, and nearby Easton hosts Pleine Air Easton and the Waterfowl Festival among many others.

Because of the Inn’s size and setting, they can provide an excellent atmosphere for focused planning sessions, yearend reviews or brain storming sessions. With a boardroom table set up on the sun porch and many secluded places for break-out meetings, Black Walnut Point Inn can get you out of suits and lobbies to help you look at things from outside the box.ck The Black Walnut Point Inn, is located at 4417 Black Walnut Point Road, in Tilghman Island, M.D. You can Contact them at 410-886-2452

The Black Walnut Point Inn hosts seasonal seminars such as bird watching during migrations, knitting, writing and vocal seminars during the winter, and workshops in photography and martial arts in the spring.

Tilghman Island Marina rents jet skis and pontoon boats, and the Phillips Wharf Environmental Center offers sunset cruises and eco tours. The Tilghman Island Waterman’s Museum and Nautical Book Store is open weekends, and Walter Bartman holds painting seminars on the island throughout the year with many of his students staying with us to take advantage of the spec-
