FACEBOOK FOOD

the research

Facebook. An almost vital, essential element in our social lives. Everyday, dozens of status updates, pictures and events pass me by while scrolling through my Facebook feed. Personally, I’m very much into cooking, baking and other culinary arts, which I sometimes share in social media. I’m by far not the only one. What interests me is why people post their food in social media, what do they post, what seems to be most interesting. There’s so much there to investigate in my timeline about this subject. It says a lot about me and my connections and what their daily life contains. Time to research on this subject.

My research on Facebook food uploads is all about the content of the food pictures. I’m telling what you can’t read in the captions, counting likes, comparing my connections and much more. I didn’t write a conclusion, on purpose, because I think that the following infographics form the conclusion already themselves. It shapes an image of the people you hang out with and it tells you something about who you are and what you and your friends seem to find interesting.

What started out as a “contemporary still life” assignment, poured out to be a research about Facebook food uploads. Why? In my timeline I was seeing all kinds of “food still lives” passing me by everyday. At first I never considered them to be a piece of art, an inspiration. But due to this assignment I was able to see them in a different context. Everything in the picture is compositioned and placed. Some people really try their best to make it look as attractive as possible, some of them are such poor quality that the food is barely recognizable. But isn’t that the interesting thing about all of this? It shows people their behavior and their way of thinking, but also their creativity or visual ability to make nice compositions and combine colours. There has been a lot of criticism about the fact that people upload their food to Facebook. It depends on your own point of view how you react to these uploads. Some might think it’s useless, or a scream for attention. But the way I see it, Facebook is a place where people can open up a little to their friends, family or collegues. Sometimes people are even more open on social media than in real life. While scrolling down someones Facebook page, you can almost draw a character out of it. I think, that’s the meaning of social media. Showing your personality, your interests and your activities. A lot of people seem to see the food uploads as a part of their daily life, which they want to share.
