DEBATE: The Morning After
Welcome to British Dance Edition 2010, hosted by DanceXchange on behalf of the National Dance Network. Presenting British Dance Edition (BDE) is a great honour and, having first hosted the event in Birmingham in 2002, DanceXchange is honoured to be doing so again in 2010. Our intention with this year’s BDE was to change perceptions of our dance scene here in Britain, and our challenge was finding a programme that would surprise and inspire prospective delegates, both UK-based and from countries across the world. Myself, Paul Burns and Hannah Sharpe (the programming team for BDE 2010) have, over the past few months, watched dance the length and breadth of Britain to pull together the programme you are here to see. We hope the choices made will stimulate discussion about the artistic aesthetics that underpin this programme, and give a sense of the scale, variety and quality of work being developed in Britain today. We’re also looking forward to showing you some of the great venues here in Birmingham. Not only are we showcasing major theatre venues including the 1,800 seat Birmingham Hippodrome and prestigious Town Hall, but also more unconventional spaces that make great venues for site-sensitive dance, including the industrial edginess of @ A E Harris, a former metal press based in the Jewellery Quarter. Beyond the performances, there are numerous opportunities to make new contacts and discuss hot topics in the dance industry, with our series of debates and networking sessions. We’ve introduced more formal opportunities to talk to the artists performing at BDE 2010 through events like The Morning After and Meet The Artists. We’re very excited about the first ever BDE Research Project which will invest funds towards important choreographic research by artists. For the first time, the focus of BDE is not just about touring work, it is about making work and developing choreographic practice. The Trade Fair provides delegates with an opportunity to talk to non-presenting artists and find out more about what’s happening in the British dance scene. The lunchtime and evening receptions that flow throughout British Dance Edition 2010, will help fuel you through each day of the festival. The late night bar at StageSide, the BDE Hub, will be a great place to round off the day and relax with friends and colleagues. On a final note, don’t forget that the BDE team is here to assist you in any way possible during your visit, so please do come and say hello to us at StageSide, The BDE Hub, or call 0121 689 1095. I look forward to meeting you over the next few days, and hope that British Dance Edition 2010 not only gives you food for thought, but leads to strong working relationships with British artists and companies way into the future! David Massingham Artistic Director, DanceXchange Bienvenue !
Welcome from Karen Gallagher, Chair of National Dance Network (NDN) On behalf of the National Dance Network, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our BDE 2010, hosted by DanceXchange in Birmingham. Over the years, BDE has made a tangible impact on those artists taking part, enabling them not only to ‘sell’ their tours in the UK and internationally, to come together with dance producers, managers and funders, and to celebrate the UK dance scene. Set up in 2007, NDN took responsibility for BDE from 2008. NDN aims “to work together to achieve a thriving, risk taking and confident dance sector in Britain, where UK based choreographers have the opportunities to research, create and present world-class work that is promoted nationally and internationally”. BDE is one way that we respond to this aim. Another project initiated by NDN is Dance3 (see page 11), offering opportunities for 10 artists based in the UK to be part of triple bills that are touring all over the UK.

Registration & Ticketing
The BDE Hub
About The BDE Digital Suite
On arrival at BDE, your first place to visit will be The BDE Hub at StageSide, where you’ll collect your registration documents and tickets for shows you’ve been allocated a seat for. You can also sign up for events that may have been added to the programme since you registered, such as the DanceXchange Profile Event (see page 10). If you need to change or return any of your tickets, please come to the registration desk and speak to a member of the team. The Registration & Ticketing desk will be open from 09.00 until 20.00 each day, or you can call 0121 689 1095.
StageSide at Birmingham Hippodrome is our “Hub” for this year’s BDE – a place to meet people, grab a coffee, find out about the programme (and Birmingham), access computer facilities, and ask for help. The Hub will be open from 09.00 each day, or you can call 0121 689 1095.
To help you stay connected during BDE, we’ve set up a Digital Suite where you can access a computer with internet connection free of charge. You can check and send emails, use the internet, and access your BDE 2010 Network account – allowing you to post comments and reviews about things you’ve seen, catch up on BDE news, and make the most of contacting other delegates while you’re in Birmingham. The Digital Suite is situated upstairs in The BDE Hub at StageSide and is open from 09.00 until 20.00 each day.
Late night bar open until 02.00 every night.
The Morning After
The Trade Fair
We are taking a new approach to the debates that are part of BDE 2010. For the first time, the performance work itself will become the subject in The Morning After, featuring a distinguished line up of international presenters in discussion with John Ashford. There are a number of other important debates, exploring subject matter which has not been interrogated in this way at BDE before, and giving you a contextual framework for what is happening in Britain today. We look forward to the discussions and the sharing of knowledge.
After enjoying the grandness of St George’s Hall for the BDE 2008 Trade Fair in Liverpool, we’re showing off one of Birmingham’s most prestigious venues for this year’s Trade Fair – Town Hall. Re-opened in 2007 after a £35 million renovation, it really is a flagship venue for the city. The Trade Fair event is a great place to make new contacts, with lots of stalls representing a wide range of British dance companies, suppliers and organisations. You don’t even need to leave the building to grab something to eat or drink, so take your time and enjoy this networking event.
Receptions
The BDE Research Project
No BDE would be complete without receptions – a chance to relax and meet up with other delegates in between performances and events. This year we’ve scheduled several receptions each day in venues across the city, generously supported and hosted by a range of organisations. These receptions, in tandem with other events such as Meet The Artists, will be an opportunity to make plans and meet new people.
For the first time ever, BDE is developing choreographic projects of its own with The BDE Research Project. This innovative project brings together a wealth of knowledge from across Britain and beyond to foster creativity in the British dance scene. Although closed to spectators at this BDE, the projects that are chosen will be developed after BDE happens, and becoming new commissions that return to BDE in 2012. The event will be filmed and you’ll be able to view this on our website afterwards.

With a history of producing and presenting dance work for children and their families, DanceXchange has an interest in what is an emerging but dynamic sector of the UK dance industry. Fevered Sleep is at the forefront of this movement, and combines high production values, multi-talented performers and stunning sets to create work that has an incredible ability to tap into the imagination of young people. The Forest is a new dance-based performance piece for children aged 5-7 years, combining dance, images, sound and light. It’s the first in a new series of projects created for a young audience that explore ideas around natural landscapes. Through a movement and image-based performance it will explore and respond to ideas about forests; about renewal, transformation and change; about scale, space, and distance; about becoming lost, and wandering, finding a path, and travelling through.

When she’s told her dreams of flying on the trapeze are ridiculous, Su finds herself sad and alone at home. Then, on one magical night, her furniture takes pity on her and gradually comes to life, enabling her to achieve her dream in the most unexpected fashion. Sitting Room Circus combines dance theatre and puppetry with specially created furniture that transforms from domestic fixture to fantastical creature. A recorded score combines original piano composition by Paul Englishby and re-scored versions of well-known classical works – Beethoven for the ferocious sofa, Saint-Saëns for the flying scatter cushions, Bach for the balancing dining chairs. The finished production will be designed to play small to mid-scale venues, and will be a perfect introduction to musically based choreography for all the family.

DanceXchange commissioned Birmingham-born Will Tuckett to create a work for children and their families in 2005, and we have long been admirers of his work as a performer and choreographer with The Royal Ballet and others. So, when we heard that Will was setting up his new company, Wildwood Productions, we were keen to show an early glimpse of the work’s development at British Dance Edition. The new company maintains the high production values of Will’s recent work but, most importantly, focuses on his exceptional ability to tell stories and fire the imagination through dance.

Having worked extensively in opera and theatre for the likes of The Royal Opera House and The Royal Shakespeare Company, Arthur Pita is a dance maker with a fantastic instinct for the theatrical. Although he has created work for a number of touring repertory dance companies, God’s Garden is his first major touring production at the middle scale under his own name. A work drawing extensively on his Portuguese roots, we were excited by the clarity of Arthur’s vision and the incredible cast of performers he has assembled. Arthur’s new full-length work God’s Garden (based on the parable of The Prodigal Son) brings to life the intensity and drama of rustic village life through dance theatre, live fado music, and a cast whose ages range from 26 to 82! Set high on a hill looking over the sea lies the magnificent village of Porto Moniz, Madeira. The golden boy of the Costa family flees on his wedding day, jilting his faithful bride to sow his wild oats. However, when he returns, there is much for his family to celebrate... and though the jilted bride's tears water a hungry garden, a wronged woman must take her revenge! Previous commissions include Snow White in Black (National Dance Award for Modern Repertory) and Mischief (Theatrical Management Award for Achievement in Dance).

The UK is known for producing fantastic dance theatre, and one of the companies at the vanguard of this sector in recent years has been Stan Won’t Dance. Known as mavericks, the company’s work is challenging, provocative and always generates discussion, which made the prospect of showing it’s new work at BDE an exciting one. The collaboration with writer Patrick Neate, who the team have admired as a novelist and poet, was also intriguing and will no doubt add to a work which we expect to be both thought provoking and compelling.
Babel was commissioned by Swindon Dance and Salisbury Arts Centre, coproduced by Laban Theatre and Stan Won’t Dance in association with Apples and Snakes, supported by Arts Council England and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

EMERGING DANCE MAKERS
DANCE3
The development of the Dance3 pilot project is a really important step for small-scale dance in the UK. Taking some of the most exciting young dance makers and creating mixed bills for touring has been a challenging project, but the National Dance Network team has put together a great range of artists, and a model which can be built on and developed in future years. We’re presenting four of the ten selected artists here, and we feel they give a flavour of the range and depth of new dance makers creating work in the UK today.

Lost Dog has emerged in recent years as a company with a particularly individual voice in the dance theatre sector. We have been massively impressed by their ability to make work which is both theatrically coherent and physically compelling, whilst also drawing an audience into a world which is often dark and occasionally disturbing. What happens after the moment it’s all ended? Following on from its critically acclaimed Hungry Ghosts, which opened at the Corn Exchange in Autumn 2008, Salvage is a bold and moving new show from the award winning company Lost Dog. Employing the company’s unique blend of dance, theatre and live music, Salvage tells the story of what happens in the aftermath – about what becomes important and what we save.

IONA KEWNEY
Iona’s work is balanced between dance, madness and performance art; the mentality of taking things beyond the limits of exertion, testing human will and physical endurance, bordering on the compulsions of madness. Methods of movement drawn from the imagination of an obsessive compulsive driven state. The detailed space in between is hungry with imagery, searchings, power and fragility-controls and chaos. Collected echoes of the mind, sound, thrust forth movement strategy in shapes. The music is a dark turbulent breeding force of undulating layers and loops in live creation. Thoughts and disorder are patterned through Handbalancing + Contortion + Hysteria.

Iona is a Scottish artist who has worked with some of the luminaries of the European dance scene, including Wim Vandekeybus and Alain Platel. She is an extraordinary performer and this work, which we saw as part of the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, is a remarkable combination of contortion, exertion and performance. With a live sound score heavy with distortion and layers of electronic noise adding to the atmosphere, this is a performance which lives long in the memory after it ends.

ROSIE KAY DANCE COMPANY Thursday 4th February 17.30-18.30 DanceXchange Studios 1 & 2, Level 5, Birmingham Hippodrome
DanceXchange Associate Artist Rosie Kay’s new work is appearing at BDE as a work in progress showing, prior to its premiere performance at International Dance Festival Birmingham in April 2010. Rosie is an incredibly driven and open artist, with a huge commitment to research and this work developed from a period of research which Rosie spent in battle training with the British Army, as part of a Rayne Fellowship. Rosie also has a knack for developing interesting creative collaborations and, in this work, brings together an exceptional group of individuals from the theatre, visual art and music sectors. 5 Soldiers is a timely, controversial, thought provoking and moving exploration of war in modern times. A dance theatre work with 5 dancers (4 male and 1 female), it looks at how the human body is essential to, and used in, warfare. 5 Soldiers explores the physical training that prepares you for war, as well as the possible effects on the body, and the injury caused by warfare. Featuring Kay’s trademark intense physicality and athleticism, 5 Soldiers uses interviews with current and former soldiers to weave a story of physical transformation, helping us understand how soldiers are made and how war affects them. Commissioned by DanceXchange, International Dance Festival Birmingham, Arts Council England and Warwick Arts Centre. Support from Birmingham City Council and The Rayne Foundation The Big Idea. Thanks to the 4th Battalion The Rifles, Sapper Mountjoy.

Within the BDE team, we consider Jasmin Vardimon to be one of the UK’s most important dance makers and this show, a retrospective of her work over the last 10 years, draws on a pool of great repertoire, much of which has been seen at previous BDEs and in previous performances at DanceXchange. With an instantly recognisable movement vocabulary, along with an extraordinary ability to rethink the use of spaces and theatrical devices, she is an artist at the top of her game. This is one of two appearances for Jasmin at BDE 2010.

Tom Dale is an artist who is interested in creating an immersive audience experience in a theatre space purely through the use of movement and sound. His choreographic style is distinct – low body stances and fluid, almost animalistic movement and this, combined with bass and beat-heavy music, conjures up the instinctive and immediate physical empathy of a nightclub space. Created with support from DanceXchange, Roam will ultimately be performed in both theatre and non-theatre environments. A captivating journey into a world of swinging sub bass and complex percussion, with specially commissioned tracks from maverick producer/composer Shackleton and drum&bass outfit Sion, Roam takes as its starting point the human requirement to explore and experience. Life’s roaming pulse is the unstoppable condition in which life finds itself, relentlessly dragging us into the unknown, connecting moment to moment, for survival, inspiration, meaning, distraction... conscious or unconscious. Created with support from Laban Theatre, DanceXchange, Dance Digital, The Garrick Charitable Trust and Arts Council England. Roam previewed at DanceXchange in Autumn 2009 and premiered at Laban Theatre in January 2010.

THE MORNING AFTER Friday 5th February 09.30-11.00 Pinsent Masons Suite, Birmingham Hippodrome Hosted and facilitated by John Ashford (Director of Aerowaves), the subject of The Morning After sessions will be the works of the previous day, and issues that arise from them. Each day, John will chair two discussions separated by a short break. During this first discussion, he’ll interview each of the choreographers from Wednesday and Thursday’s programme in turn, and draw them all into a general discussion about the work of the day. In the second part, he’ll seek the opinions of their work from four overseas producers, and build a wider debate about current practice from the areas of disagreement where oppositions reveal truths. The artists will change each day but the producers will remain constant, thereby building a vocabulary of shared reference as the viewing of works accumulates. Speakers joining John on the Producer Panel include: • Claire Verlet, responsible for the dance programme of the two theatres of the Theatre de la Ville in Paris • Guy Gypens, programme Director of Kaaitheater in Brussels (Fri & Sat sessions only) • Francesc Casadesus, Director of the Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona (Sat & Sun sessions only) • Yvona Kreuzmannova, Director of the dance venue Ponec and the festival Tanec Praha in Prague • Martin Wechsler, Programme Director for the two theatres of The Joyce in New York

Amidst life there is death. Death is one certainty people choose to ignore. This new work explores the physicality of the body whilst it dies. When the body is shutting down, there remains a connection between the physical, emotional and spiritual. The body can illustrate the torture or bliss a soul experiences. We show grief at somebody else’s death and sadness in their pain. At the news of being told that a close one is dying and spending last moments with them, there is a sense of helplessness, frustration and feeling lost. Whilst watching someone die, the moments are permanently inscribed in memory. Lost is dedicated to Aakash’s cousin Lakhan Rajput (24th May 1989 -- 25th November 2009). Liz Aggiss is something of a one-off in the UK dance industry and this work sees her explore this position through reflections on her performance and academic career. With an unmistakably British sense of the ridiculous and the absurd, Liz pulls together aspects of vaudeville, cabaret and dance theatre, amongst others, to create her work. For British Dance Edition 2010, we have given her a venue befitting her ‘grand-dame’ status – the beautiful Victorian debating chamber at the city’s Council House. In her Performance Lecture, Liz Aggiss asks the question: how does a mature, post-modern, solo, female dancer, originally from a bleak post-war suburb in Essex, with a feverish commitment to the lost dances of Central Europe and a rather ad hoc and irregular dance education, seek out the shadows from the past, stalk them relentlessly, and embed and sustain herself within the British dance culture for the past 30 years? Professor Aggiss takes you on her oddball journey from Wiggling with The Stranglers in 1980, to Grotesque Dancer in 1986, and on to Guerrilla Dancing in 2009. From stage to screen-dance and back again, performing live, showing her dance films, chatting and generally entertaining her public, this “Vivienne Westwood of the dance world” dodges categorisation and enjoys being classified as unclassifiable.

THE LAND OF YES AND THE LAND OF NO BONACHELA DANCE COMPANY Friday 5th February 14.30-15.50 Elmhurst School for Dance Concept and Direction: Rafael Bonachela Choreography: Rafael Bonachela in collaboration with the dancers Music performed by: Ezio Bosso & Buxusconsort Production Design: Alan Macdonald Lighting Design: Guy Hoare Costume Design: Theo Clinkard Dancers: Amy Hollingsworth, Fiona Jopp, Cameron McMillan, Lisa Welham, Renaud Wiser, Paul Zivkovich
An artist with a truly international profile, Rafael Bonachela has once again assembled a fantastic group of collaborators for this new work. Alan McDonald’s stunning design, featuring a backdrop created from a grid of fluorescent tubes and Ezio Bosso’s beautiful score particularly stand out, as do the remarkable group of dancers which the company have assembled. With Bonachela’s trademark flowing, energetic movement style, the various elements combine to produce a work which impresses as a sum of its parts. The Land of Yes and The Land of No is Bonachela’s first work for his own company since taking up the post of Artistic Director at Sydney Dance Company and it’s his deepest exploration yet into the human psyche, the power of imagination, and the body’s ability to give physical shape to memory, experience and emotions. The Land of Yes and The Land of No is co-produced by Arts Council England, artsdepot, DanceEast, Danceworks UK and the City of London Festival, with additional support from The Buster Foundation, Garrick Charitable Trust, Leche Trust, Marina Kleinwort Charitable Trust, The Mercers Company and Southbank Centre.

We were stunned by this performance when we first encountered it in May 2009, in a Victorian warehouse in East London, Village Underground. An immersive performance, the action moves around a number of glass containers, each housing a single performer. Playing on notions of isolation and exhibition, it is a performance that makes the viewer question how they view as an audience, whilst making the performer’s uniquely restricted environment seem as poignant as it is absurd. Under Glass is an animated exhibition of human life, which takes place within a series of glass jars and cabinets. At once medical laboratory, museum exhibit and gallery, Under Glass lifts characters out of the hurly burly of everyday life and frames their moments of solitude; examining human beings attempting, with varying success to live within their limits. Each character exists in its own delicate environment: a woman in a jam jar, a shy ‘wallflower’ pinned behind a glass panel, a man clockwatching in his office. Produced by Fuel. Winner of the Total Theatre Award: Visual & Physical Theatre 2009. A Sadler’s Wells Commission.

Spaceman draws inspiration from astronaut training procedures and evolutionary physical processes. It presents the performer within an imagined physical framework as he undergoes a series of evolutionary mutations, rising from an animalistic state to becoming a fully “formed” mechanoid robot. Although Dudendance has been making work for over 25 years, it wasn’t until the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival that the BDE team had the opportunity to see the company’s work. Spaceman is unlike any other work that we’ve seen in recent years – the company’s strong visual identity for the work, the unusual thematic content and the extraordinary performance by Paul Rous making this a work which left us excited about the prospect of presenting it at BDE. For its performances in Birmingham, the company will be showing the work at A E Harris – an atmospheric old factory space in an industrial area of the city which, we believe, will add a further dimension to this stunning work.

Ghosts in the Machine is a twenty-five minute looped, projected 3D dance installation. The audience – wearing red/blue anaglyph glasses – sees what appears to be three solid three-dimensional dancers in the same space as themselves. As they dance, sing and joke their way through the twenty-five minutes, the topics of their discussions range from existentialism to ballpark-sex to media studies. Ghosts in the Machine was commissioned by Lighthouse (Brighton), and premiered by them as part of HOUSE, the Artists Open Houses new initiative for Brighton Festival. The work was funded by Arts Council England with additional support from the University of Brighton.
Having had an illustrious career as a performer, Gary has made a name for himself as a choreographer with a singular artistic voice with works such as Coal and Horsemeat. With its British comic sensibility, 2 Men and a Michael is a wonderful example of how dance and movement can evoke a sense of character without specific narrative references. 2 Men and a Michael is a dead pan send up of stand up. Dressed to kill, 2 idiots are locked in a constant loop of shenanigans and nonesenseness where something means nothing and nothing is anything. Slightly downtrodden, this short work is crammed to the brim with snapshot moments and unfinished efforts. This production is supported by The Civic Barnsley, Danceworks UK, and Yorkshire Dance.

Billy Cowie has developed an unusual niche within the UK dance industry – 3D dance video installation. Having wowed us with his small 3D installation In the Flesh at the Tanzmesse festival in Germany in 2008, we were interested in presenting this unusual take on new technology and physical performance at British Dance Edition. Broadening the ideas from Billy’s earlier work and adding text and music, this is a humorous and self referential piece which expands ideas of new technology and performance.

(LOTS OF LOVE) PROTEIN Friday 5th February 17.30-18.30 DanceXchange Studios 1 & 2, Level 5, Birmingham Hippodrome
Luca Silvestrini has a unique place in the British dance scene and is well known for the social comment and public engagement aspects of his work as a choreographer. Having tackled the British drinking culture in Publife (a sitespecific performance in a pub, which featured in the last BDE to take place in Birmingham in 2002), consumerism in Big Sale and, most recently the quest for the body beautiful in Dear Body, L.O.L (lots of love) continues Luca’s commitment to commentary on the topical with a work about searching for real connections in a world where electronic connections are all too easy to come by. This sharing shows results of initial research towards L.O.L (lots of love), a new fulllength piece by Luca Silvestrini's award-winning Protein, which the company is planning to tour in Spring 2011. L.O.L looks at love, wanting and connectedness in our electronic-driven age. Protein takes everyday issues and subjects them to a deep, witty analysis through idiosyncratic and distinctive dance theatre. Powering the approach is a desire to connect theatrical experience with familiar life stories. The result is work of humour, pathos and invention which reflects the integrity and absurdity of its ingredients. Made at The Place during Choreodrome 2009.

If We Go On is funded by Grants for the Arts through the Arts Council of England. Co-commissioned by Sheffield Theatres, Newbury Corn Exchange, Hull City Council and Peak Performance@Montclair State University. Supported by The Junction and Danceworks UK.
Creating a performance which questions the very nature of performance as a whole, Charlotte Vincent has once again proved to be a singular and innovative voice in dance theatre. With a strong conceptual rigour typical of her work, she questions all aspects of creating and performing for both audience and performers alike. Whilst unashamedly self-referential, If We Go On manages to deftly avoid being self-indulgent with strong elements of humour and poignancy. We were really excited by this work when first seeing it in rehearsal, and are looking forward to staging it as a public performance for BDE before it travels to the US. Laying bare the mechanics of theatre, and structured around ten solo acts, If We Go On allows the performers to embrace uncertainty, not knowing and forgetfulness. It is a piece shaped by hesitation and incoherence and offers a glimpse into the constant internal striving that takes place within the performer as things slip in and out of their control. If We Go On investigates theatrical failure as a kind of narrative, through looking at the relationship between language and dance, between music and silence and between moving and not moving at all.

RAS GOFFA BOBBY SANDS THE BOBBY SANDS MEMORIAL RACE EDDIE LADD Friday 5th February 22.30-23.30 The Patrick Centre, Birmingham Hippodrome Performer/Dancer: Eddie Ladd Devised/Choreographed by: Eddie Ladd/Sarah Williams Lighting Design & Technical Manager: Giles Parbery Sound Design: Nick Rothwell & Giles Parbery Composer: Guto Puw Writer: Eddie Ladd, Menna Elfyn Interviews with Denis O’Hearn & Laurence McKeown Extracts from Bobby Sands’ writing and from prison messages
One of a rich vein of artists creating exciting conceptually based performance work in Wales, Eddie Ladd has created an incredibly moving new work based on biographical texts, which are used within the work in both the English and Welsh languages. Visually arresting and emotionally moving, the work also uses new technology in created a movement triggered sound score. However, at its heart is the extraordinary physical performance by Eddie herself and the story told, both of which are memorable long after seeing the work. Performed on a 12ft x 6ft running machine, this is a dance piece following the life of Bobby Sands who died on hunger strike in the H Blocks in Belfast in 1981. He was striking in order to win back political status for the republican prisoners, in pursuit of the longer-term aim of a united Ireland. Bobby was a runner as a teenager, and this piece’s starting point is an article on running and racing that he wrote in prison at the end of the 70s. It goes on to consider the long-distance goals of running and resistance. The title refers to a race in the United States that is run in Bobby’s memory. A co-production with Aberystwyth Arts Centre. With thanks to the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University and Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff. 27

Supported by Curve, Leicester and DanceEast, Ipswich.
One of the UK’s best known contemporary choreographers, Akram Khan has a long history of work with DanceXchange, including opening The Patrick Centre theatre in 2001 and creating work for DanceXchange’s in-house dance company, Bare Bones. For this year’s BDE, we invited Akram to discuss and share ideas for his new ensemble work Vertical Road with delegates over breakfast. This new work continues to explore Akram’s interest in contemporary society and the dissolution and distillation of cultural identity, a particularly topical subject for Birmingham, one of the UK’s most culturally diverse cities. Vertical Road is Akram Khan’s latest contemporary ensemble work, and continues his ambition to explore the interface between different cultures and creative disciplines. Khan brings together a host of performers and artists from across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, diverse in age, craft and background. Potential collaborators include composer Nitin Sawhney and acclaimed puppeteers duo Blind Summit. Inspired by stories of angels as found in different cultures, faiths and mythologies, Vertical Road contemplates their universal role as intermediaries between the human and the sacred. It investigates the notion of the Arabic word ‘zenith’ or ‘vertical line’, the highest point reached by a celestial body. The piece will premiere in October 2010 at Sadler’s Wells, London, before embarking on an international tour across North America, Europe, India, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

VARMINTS Work in development A conversation with Kenrick Sandy and Mikey ‘J’ Asante (co-directors of Olivier Award winning Boy Blue Entertainment), about a new hip hop dance theatre show for 8yrs+, based on the book published by Templar written by Helen Ward and Marc Craste. At BDE 2008 Emma Gladstone and Kiki Gale (of East London Dance), discussed the need for well produced dance work for young audiences. As Boy Blue Entertainment and East London Dance have a long working relationship, and had performed regularly at Sadler’s Wells, they linked up with the company (and Clare Connor of Stratford Circus) to discuss ideas. The result is Varmints, touring from spring 2011 to studio theatres. A short film will be shown of the 2008 research undertaken, followed by a discussion and presentation of the proposed storyboard, music and design. MAKING MISCHIEF Finished work A presentation by Sue Buckmaster, Artistic Director of Theatre-Rites. Can theatre and dance collaborate to create non-classical, nonadaptation based work that is innovative, fun, and for family audiences? The answer is yes. Commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and the Dance Touring Partnership, Mischief saw Theatre-Rites collaborate with Arthur Pita to create an award-winning family show. After two successful tours it is clear there is a growing audience, and the plan is to tour again in 2011 or 2012.

PERFORMANCE
We first saw this piece during the Place Prize finals in 2008 and were immediately drawn to the atmospheric nature of the work, and the ideas of time, loss and memory which it explores. Simply staged, with a beautifully performed voiceover text, it is a work which explores ideas about life through exploring ideas about dance. Gertrud is an imagined and performed conversation through time between Austrian expressionist choreographer Gertrud Bodenwieser (1890–1959) and Simon (1968–), a solo performer-choreographer. It is a meditation on the nature of solitude, both on-stage and in the wider world. The project forms part of a trilogy of works curated as Conversations with the dead, featuring additional choreographies by Helen Herbertson and Bagryana Popov. Gertrud was commissioned for The Place Prize 2008 sponsored by Bloomberg.

Birmingham-based ACE dance and music has broadened many people’s concept of contemporary African and Caribbean dance in recent years through collaborations between Artistic Director Gail Parmel and artists such as Vincent Mantsoe, Akiko Kitamura and, in this new work, Douglas Thorpe. Dance video is a favourite on YouTube and yet this is awash with a myriad of choices and the site does not attempt to guide the user except in the popularity stakes. The web is potentially a great ally, it provides the sector with a global reach, and dance is well suited to be attractive in this arena. However, we are in an industry transfixed and geared towards the physical. This debate focuses on the now and the future potential of dance in the digital arena. Jonnie Turpie, Co-Director of Dance TV and Director of Digital Media at Maverick TV, chairs this debate around the importance of the digital medium in today’s world, joined by a panel of industry professionals. The debate will include a Q&A session.

Nigel says: “Still is a chaotic, wild, seriously funny piece about love and loss – a celebration of life and death written with bodies without limits”. Still is anything but. Nigel Charnock’s patchwork of ideas takes the dancers in a constant stir guided by his eclectic choice of music. There are microphones and music boxes, knickers and bondage, love and death. The DV8 founding member and dance maverick kidnaps dancers and audiences alike into a world of love, lust, addictions and obsessions using his unique blend of morbid irony, furious entertainment and black comedy.

STILL
Not a work for the fainthearted, this is Nigel Charnock doing what he does best, exploding notions of convention in dance theatre and pushing the boundaries of decency! Typically frantic and fast paced in its delivery, but with moments of sensitivity, Charnock celebrates the individual physicality of each of his performers to create a piece which is funny, outrageous and moving.

First created in 2006 for DanceXchange’s in-house dance company Bare Bones, The 5 Man Show toured to great acclaim as a show in the round. For BDE we wanted to give an insight into process and share the company’s work as they recruit dancers and restage the work as a middle scale work for traditional end-on theatre spaces. From suave men in suits accompanied by Leonard Bernstein’s dramatic Fugues & Riffs (Arthur Pita), to highly physical dance (Liam Steel), and breathtaking lift sequences (David Massingham), this unique dance show for an all-male cast amazed audiences across the UK and abroad when it first toured in 2006. The 5 Man Show is being revived and, for BDE, the company will present a section of the audition, including excerpts from all three pieces in the show.

RITES COMPANY CHAMELEON Saturday 6th February 16.30-17.15 The Patrick Centre, Birmingham Hippodrome Performers/Dancers: Anthony Missen & Kevin Turner Devised/Choreographed/Produced by: Anthony Missen & Kevin Turner Lighting Design by: Adam Carree Sound Design/Composer/Music by: Miguel Marin Costume Design: Fabrice Serafino
We were really excited on seeing Company Chameleon’s work for the first time in the summer of 2009. Two strong performers with a range of experience as dancers, co-artistic directors Anthony and Kevin have created in their debut work a piece with huge emotional depth exploring ideas of masculinity, memory and character. An exceptionally mature and confident work, Rites places the company as one to watch for the future. Rites explores those events and experiences that shape us to become what we are, where we receive our formative information from, and the cyclical nature of those behavioural traits we are left with. The work moves chronologically, charting the passage from childhood, through adolescence into adulthood. A big question in this work is “what does it mean to be a man?” and as such looks at themes such as coming of age, peer pressure, and the fragile balance of the internal psychological struggle against the external forces that steer us. Rites was commissioned by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester, and supported by Arts Council England. Company Chameleon is Resident Company of The Lowry.

FIGURE THIS ANNA KRZYSTEK Saturday 6th February 16.30-17.15 Ikon Eastside Choreography & Performance: Anna Krzystek Original Sound Score: Tom Murray Video Installation: Tim Nunn, Daniela De Paulis & Anna Krzystek
Anna is an artist with a rigorous conceptual basis and strong sense of visual identity for her work. She has been creating work for a number of years in New York (where she trained), Europe (as part of Helsinki-based performance group Oblivia) and in Scotland (where she is based). However, this wide geographical base for her work and individual style of performance means that she is relatively unknown in the UK dance industry. We first met her and saw her work at the New Territories festival in Glasgow, where she was presenting all three pieces in her trilogy, and were keen to expose her to a wider dance sector audience through BDE. Figure This is the third piece in the trilogy, following Test and Still, based on the premise of waiting. Waiting, in all degrees of ambiguity, is experienced by everyone every day. In these pieces the performer is referred to as the figure. Her presence is at once both immediate and distant as she is placed in relation to time, space, sound, object and filmed image. The figure moves through a series of choreographic acts that see her pushed to extremes. These acts are compulsive and enduring, they commence and end without warning leaving the figure suspended in periods of “not doing”. It is precisely in these gaps of “not doing’ that the figure is revealed and a sense of closeness can be felt. Figure This is a New Territories 09 commission co-produced by Les Halles, Brussels, as part of A Space For Live Art. Additional funding & support from Scottish Arts Council Choreographic Fellowship Award, CCA, Dance Base, The Work Room, Dance House, Tramway, Oblivia and Balance.

TWO X TWO CHOICE AFTERLIGHT PART 1 RUSSELL MALIPHANT COMPANY & COBOSMIKA COMPANY Saturday 6th February 20.00-21.00 Birmingham Hippodrome 40
We were really excited when we saw AfterLight Part 1 as part of Sadler’s Wells’ In the Spirit of Diaghilev. An exquisite and moving solo, it forms the climax of this triple bill from Russell Maliphant Company. With movement which revels in the strength, weight and lines of the human body, we’re hoping that this performance will form a fitting close to British Dance Edition 2010. The dances of award winning choreographer Russell Maliphant are characterised by his distinctive approach to the relationship between movement, light and music. This special programme opens with Two x Two, Maliphant’s reworking of his solo Two, which premiered at the London Colisuem in 2009. The second piece is Choice, Maliphant’s 2003 ballet for five dancers revived for the first time on Catalonia based CobosMika Company, making its BDE debut in this work enveloped within a soundscape influenced by Asian rhythms. Closing the programme is Maliphant’s brand new solo work, AfterLight Part 1 (pictured), which was created for the Sadler’s Wells Production In the Spirit of Diaghilev (premiered in London, Oct 2009), and uses Vaslav Nijinksy’s geometric drawings and paintings as a starting point.

Coach Timetable Three of our BDE venues – Elmhurst School for Dance, Ikon Eastside and A E Harris – are more than a five minute walk away from The BDE Hub at StageSide, so we’ve arranged coach transportation. Please note: All coaches from The BDE Hub will depart from Inge Street, which is a one minute walk away and signposted on the map opposite. You can meet beforehand in The Hub and a member of staff will take you to the departure point.
