Bottles Webbing Recycled Plastic Merchandising allocated 2 new skus for Quest bags that needed to serve the common commuter customer, not the intense weekend hiker. These bag needed a 15" laptop sleeve, easy access cell phone pocket, and space for gym clothes and shoes. I iterated heavily on many sketches for each new bag design for the season keeping in mind the customer it was serving, the style, the functions it would need with a minimum of 10-20 rough sketches each, checked in key stakeholders, narrowed down to 3 each that turned to vector sketches, to lastly the 1 final CAD drawings that would go to the first prototype. Worked closely with materials and costing team to reduce the cost of these bags. We identified the most costly materials, reduced the usage where possible without compromising design, all while keeping every material to be an eco material, recycled polyester made of water bottles, and the hardware trims being post industrial acetal. For the Quest bags, the cork trims were taken out, replaced with heat transfers and embroidery branding, recycled polyester webbing, woven bran,d and story labels that made this bag be part of a more holistic recycled bottle story.

Created spec packs made templates specifically made for bahs. Made the legend, construction, detail drawings and measurements. This involved drawing meticulous and detailed bag views and material layers in Ai to best communicate to technical developers who would take further it further and creating BOMs.

I worked closely with briefing our copywriter on the Marketing team to create a small story label that would be on the inside of each bag made of recycled polyester. This really elevated the whole assortment and was a point of contact to customers to be inspired and share our brand story about tree planting. Every item plants 10 trees after all. Let's. Grow.

It was exciting to expand on the knit and woven accessories collections at tentree. For FW22 the intention was:

1. Add in commercial beanies that used monomaterials for our future recycling stories

26 | LISA Y. LAI PORTFOLIO

3. Create and brainstorm unisex accessories that would be an easy fit, low price point item that would be very accessible for someone to be introduced to the brand. This program transitioned into, SS22 where we introduced more woven blanket towels as picnics in the pandemic became very popular as being outdoors was one of the few things people could do.

Being mindful of what these accessorie items would be worn with, I took on the silhouette designs as well as the surface design work. For anything graphic on the accessories, whether it was the plaids on the scarf, the jacquard in the sock or blankets, or woven label on the beanie, I created the artwork from sketch, to colour, to art pack.

SOURCING WITH END IN MIND

MATERIALDESIGN

I lead the sourcing research of changing the higher priced wool/rec poly blend we use to run to either 100% organic cotton or 100% RWS wool. I gave direction to vendors and reviewed knit and woven yarns fit for the design intent. By making this transition and change, we not only saved on material cost but also on the MOQ/MCQ restrictions we were facing before. Most importantly, mono-material items especially fully fashioned or woven items are much easier to recycled in the future than natural /synthetic blends.

BRIEF + INTENT

The main initiative for the SS22 season for the headwear collection were: 1. Refit all hat silhouettes 2. Rebrand and redesign of caps 3. Build into brim hats The baseball hats needed revamping as all previous hat fits were the same high crown pattern, and did not resonate to our new customer. We wanted to distinguish the different hat silhouettes from each other that required the efforts between merchandising, design and technical developers through market research and a full hat refit exercise. We also took this opportunity to add in more trend forward hats, a collection of brim hats to build on the success of our wool festival hat and bucket hat from the previous season. This fit in well with the rest of the apparel collection as we had this softer theme of "Close to Home" and "Everyday Escape". Tentree's brand direction was to be more accessible to the eco-fashion aspiring person. These bucket hat and safari hats made from eco-friendly materials fit perfectly with these outdoor inspired outfits like cargo pants and oversized 46t-shirts.|LISA

DESIGN AND BRANDING

This season we could finally see the efforts of our rebrand show sales returns as our D2C customer was a lot more trend forward than our previous intense outdoor person. In looking at the hat collection with fresh new eyes, I wanted to test our newer "timelessness" hats with great fit and more commercial branding that was more prevalent in the market place such as embroideries and woven labels. Through more classic pieces, this in itself creates styles that could be worn for a lot longer, in turn would promote a more sustainable lifestyle since each items would have a longer wear time. This was balanced with still keeping some true graphic styles that our older customer would really like but instead of sublimation prints on trucker panels, we introduced more graphic patches and embroideries that fit with current tentree planting graphic capsules. We distinguished all the hats to be low, mid, high crowns, and filled in the gaps for the missing silhouettes like the camper hat, and snapback hat that would round out the cap collection. REFIT

It was great to see traction for our new silhouettes both for e-comm and for our biggest wholesale buyer. The miss in this collection was that the graphics were reduced too significantly, and though the brand is not moving in that direction anymore, it was a good reminder to not neglect that user for the future.

64 | LISA Y. LAI PORTFOLIO

A large role I took on this season and moving forward was owning the Creative Kick-off and other design presentations. This meant creating much more professional looking presentations that the entire design team would use. We use this template for all of our presentations for our key stakeholders such as our CEO, Director of Sustainability, Sr. Director of Marketing and the rest of the Senior Leadership Team. I managed the training and mentoring in how to use this file to all designers, assistants, interns, and graphics team. I gathered and gave timelines to combine everyone's work into one file we would use for final presentations. I owned creating the decks for our seasonal colour palettes and my own design categories while also working collaboratively with the team to best communicate our cohesive collection together.

FW22 was the first season I took on the whole fully fashioned knitwear collection for both men's and women's in addition to overseeing all accessories categories. Initiatives for the fully fashioned collection this season were:

1. Expand on the fit ranges for both men's and women's knitwear

2. Add in various trend forward necklines and knit executions such as mock-necks, collegiate inspired V-neck and Polos, ribs and cables.

This was my first take on fully fashioned knitwear using the knowledge I took from accessories knitwear. I first hand sketched designs that were reviewed by the design team and merchants. I then requested knit downs to better understand different knit gauges, needle ends and how that affected the garment weight and Lookingcost.at the silhouettes available which were all very long in length, through my market and design trend research, decided to add in more mid length and cropped fits into the collection along with various necklines. I was able to have the creative freedom to add in beautiful cabling details and jacquards as well that stood out to be visually interesting in the collection and was well received.LISA

Since this collection, I have just finished the FW23 collection and have developed more yarns and heathering effects since then. I feel very confident in the knitwear apparel category and am looking forward to future collections.

Grateful to have worked with an amazing technical developer where we took on this category for the first time together. She really guided me through apparel standards and fits and I taught her gauge and knit structures. This was sold in well on the wholesale front and the collection is half launched on e-comm right now and currently waiting on sales and feedback.

After our first Dr. Seuss Lorax collaboration collection that I took a small part in, since we did not have a graphics surface designer at the time, I was asked to step in to own all collaborations as the main design lead in liaison with Marketing temporarily. Thrilled that our next collaboration would be with National Geographic, the intent was to create a cohesive product line using our best selling Treeblend Sweat sets for Men's, Women's and Kid's to build customer Iacquisition.workedwith the Sr. Director of Marketing and Creative Director very closely to create a design brief. We wanted this collection to stand out from all the other Nation Geographic collections and really speak about trees and the beauty of different type of trees in general. Our art direction was inspired by vintage National Geographic magazines, and the illustration style using fine quill line work. The National Geographic team shared with us a very large collection of archived photos from their archives of trees from all over the world to be inspired by.

LISA Y. LAI PORTFOLIO | 85

I pitched many colour palettes that would differentiate this special collection from our mainline, reviewed with the team and requested lab-dips in all the fabrics used. The yellow was a very risky colour meant more for the marketing campaigns that proved to be quite popular in the end. Throughout this process, I presented concepts, and design ideas, and colour to both the tentree marketing team as well as the Nat Geo team based in California. We as a team chose 4 tree photos from the National Geographic archives to re-illustrate, and I hand drew these using ink and a quill that I documented over videos. This was later used in the marketing campaigns. After the artwork was finalized, I iterated many compositions and styles these could translate to. When completed, I made the artwork ready for print, specing the size/placements, choosing Pantone colours so that it was factory ready for strike-offs.

When the final collection was approved by both teams, I reviewed and approved all artwork strike offs and submitted the final designs through the Disney Portal.

It was a very successful collection that launched in Aug 2021. It exceeded our sales and brand acquisition with styles selling out the first 2 weeks. This was a great learning experience as I project managed the design side of the project. I coordinated and created GTM deadlines for different members like brand packaging, production, sustainability and Throughmarketing.this positive experience, I was asked to manage more special collaborations such Smokey Bear, Jilly Box, and a shoe collab that is still to be launched.

Inspired by the culture, imagery, and heritage stories collected from my hometown trip to China that year, every idea I had, I kept “Butthinking:mymother would hate that.” In realizing the subconscious filtering of all my creative work through the lens of what my mother would think, this idea became a cathartic and unapologetic project to reverse that mentality. The inspiration became an art piece of satin scarves with imagery that my mother would strongly dislike. Joined with photographer Dhia Istiqamah, she took on the artistic freedom and worked with local Vancouver creatives to represent what the work means and how it can be applied

Thiscontemporarily.projectaimed to be a conversation piece especially for creative people who filter their work through the lense of others. Together we brought the community together in a pop-up art show to celebrate being unapologetically ourselves.
