we package humans sustainably

OUR MISSION

OUR MISSION At Secondskin, we believe humans should be packaged with care. We consider care for the human, the environment, and the packaging itself throughout the entirety of our design process. Using all natural compostable fibres, a zero waste cutting process, and encouraging a closed loop lifecycle of our products, we put sustainability at the forefront of our values. As packaging is a reflection of the object that is packaged, we believe your human should be packaged in the reflection of their values as well. We’re passionate about the natural life cycle of the world. While the body of the Secondskin jacket may wear down and eventually compost, the snap buttons are encouraged to be passed down, reused in either another jacket, or for something completely new. Whether you need to package a thousand humans, or just one, we provide a customizable human package design service where you choose the dieline body cut out, material, and select colours.

Linen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant. Linen is laborious to manufacture, but the fiber is very absorbent and garments made of linen are valued for their exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather.

Hemp is rapidly renewable, requires little or no pesticides, grows without fertilizer, requires minimum attention, doesn’t deplete soil nutrients and is easy to harvest.

More than 25% of the world’s pesticides are used in conventional cotton production. Organic cotton is grown without toxic, synthetic chemical inputs. Look for natural dyes or colored cotton to further reduce the amount of chemicals dumped into our ecosystem.

Tencel is made from natural cellulose wood pulp and is fully biodegradable. It uses Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood pulp and less-toxic chemicals in a closedloop process.

ZERO-WASTE CONSTRUCTIONS

20

dskhakjhafsldjjdlaksfjfd

Z E R O - WA S T E CONSTRUCTION We’ve committed to reduce the waste from the get go. Each weave of a fabric is made by someone and is therefore precious in our eyes, how could we think of cutting it off and wasting it? Whereas most human packaging companies average around 16% waste just in the material cutting process, we have cut it down to 0%. What is a dieline? Think of a cookie cutter but for paper or in this case fabrics. The line that cuts the material. You may notice and wonder how this is a zerowaste when it is not a rectangle. Our designers have constructed it into such a shape so that it tessellates on itself and can be continuously cut. Select between three different styles of zero waste constructed human packaging. All designs use our known diagonal seam detailing coming from the sleeve all the way to the center front. Each jacket is unisez made for a loose fit and come in small, medium and large size. For the most of it coming from one large piece that folds into itself, it allows the garment to have a wider material range for reuse.

SCREW ON SNAP

44

dskhakjhafsldjjdlaksfjfd

SCREW ON SNAPS Sustainability runs in two directions. How do you make thing that lasts a lifetime vs .how do you make something easily degradable? We bring that forth through the compostable materials of natural fibres such as hemp, linens, organic cotton, etc. as well as the long lasting durability of stainless steel buttons. When the fibres of the jacket inevitably wears down over time, the buttons will grow character, age beautifully through the conditions it had withstood. Reuse or compost the fabric, however keep the buttons to be used again.

45

SCREW ON SNAPS

1 . D I S A S S E M B LE

2. RE FURBISH

Unscrew snap stud and socket.

Reuse snaps in either a new jacket body, or cut down original body to make new item.

46

SCREW ON SNAPS

3. R E L I V E

4. PASS O N

Use new object with old buttons

When buttons have fully lived it’s life, pass it down to some one else. Last case, recycle the stainless steel buttons.
